The purpose of the study is to find development of contact area, contact pressure and friction forces occurring at joints or connection areas inbetween structural members or mechanical parts. The problem has a pair of difficulties intrinsically; a constraint of displacement due to contact, and presence of work term by nonconservative friction force in the variational principle of the problem. Because of these difficulties, the variational principle remains in the form of inequality. It is resolved by penalty method and perturbation method making the inequality to an equality which is proper for computational purposes. A contact problem without friction is solved to find contact area and contact pressure, which are to be used as data for the analysis of the friction problem using perturbed variational principle. For numerical experiments, a Hertz problem, a rigid punch problem, and the latter one with friction effects are solved using $Q_2$-finite elements.
When a body including a crack inside is subjected to the compressive forces, the crack is closed and sliding occurs on the crack surfaces. In this work, a subsurface crack subjected to a static or moving compressive load is analyzed with the finite element method considering friction on the crack surface. The friction on the crack surface is assumed to follow the Coulomb friction law. A numerical method based on the finite element method and iterative method is applied in this work. And the result is compared with the frictional contact of crack by ANSYS using contact 12 element. The numerical results of two methods are compared with the wellknown analytical solutions, and the accuracy of iterative method is checked..
Controlling the friction between wheel and rail is direct and very effective measures to improve the curving performances of railway trucks, because the curving performances depend much on friction characteristics. Authors have proposed a method, 'friction control', which utilizes friction modifier ($KELTRACK^{TM}$ HPF) with onboard spraying system. With the method, not only friction coefficient, but also friction characteristics can be controlled as expected. In this study, MBD simulation is very valuable tool to foresee the effect of the control in advance of experiment with real car. And the creep characteristics of wheel/rail contact with the friction modifier takes very important role in the simulation. In this paper, authors propose a theoretical model of wheel/rail contact condition considering the creep characteristics of friction modifier, which is derived the application of principle tribological theories.
A cycloidal speed reducer is a type of the speed reducers of machinery. The cycloidal speed reducer consists of two cycloidal plate gears, housing roller gear, input shaft, output pin and shaft, and eccentric bearings. Especially the cycloidal plate gear has the peculiar parts of the teeth, because of gearing with the housing roller gear that has the several rollers on the circular line. And then all teeth on the cycloidal plate gear can be designed to contact with the rollers on the housing roller gear at the same time. Therefore the cycloidal plate gear has always contact motion with rollers and the force is interacted between roller gear with cycloidal plate gear. Because the contact force and friction force must be required to improve the accuracy in design procedures of cycloidal speed reducers, this paper presents a force analysis considered friction effect approach derived by static force equilibrium condition, geometrical adaptation, instant velocity center method and relative velocity method.
All teeth on the cycloidal plate gear exist in the contact motion with rollers and the forces are interacted between roller gears with cycloidal plate gears. So, the contact forces and friction forces must be required to improve the accuracy in design procedures of cycloidal speed reducers. This paper presents a force analysis considered the friction effect approach derived by static force equilibrium condition, geometrical adaptation, instant velocity center method and relative velocity method. Finally, the paper develops CAD-program for the construction of the design automation using the proposed method.
Appropriate friction model usage is important for impact analysis because the relative motions between parts that are in contact for very short durations can vary greatly depending on the friction model. Vehicle seat components that have significant effects on impact analysis are also considered. This paper presents an experimental investigation of various material contact pairs to obtain the friction parameters of the Benson exponential friction model for impact simulation. The Coulomb friction model has limitations for impact analysis because of singularity at zero velocity. Metal/nonmetal materials are prepared, and friction tests are conducted for various sliding speeds, loads, and lubrication conditions. The obtained data are used in the friction model to implement finite element analysis. The parameters of the friction model are obtained by the curve-fitting method. The experimental results show that the friction coefficient with metal/nonmetal contact pairs is stable regardless of the working conditions. The friction model used in this study can also be applied for finite element analysis of the crash conditions, where the friction changes abruptly at the contact interface; the obtained friction parameters are also expected to be more accurate with more precise tests under different working conditions. These results can help improve the accuracy of the finite element analysis.
A new incremental finite element model is developed to simulate the frictional contact of elastic bodies. The incremental convex programming method is exploited, in the framework of finite element approach, to recast the variational inequality principle of contact problem in a discretized form. The non-classical friction model of Oden and Pires is adopted, however, the friction effect is represented by an equivalent non-linear stiffness rather than additional constraints. Different parametric studies are worked out to address the versatility of the proposed model.
With the recent increase in the demand for the net-shape forming, numerical simulations are being commonly adopted to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of design of bulk metal forming processes. Proper consideration of tribological problems at the contact interface between the tool and workpiece is crucial in such simulations. In other words, lubrication and friction play important roles in metal forming by influencing the metal flow, forming load and die wear. In order to quantitatively estimate such friction condition or lubricant characteristic, the constant shear friction model is widely used for bulk deformation analyses. For this, new friction testing method based on the forward or backward extrusion process is proposed to predict the shear friction factor in this work. In this method, the tube-shaped punch pressurizes the workpiece so that the heights at the center and outer of punch (or mandrel) become different according to the friction condition. That is, the height at the center of punch is higher than that at the outer of the punch when the friction condition at the contact interface is severe. From this founding, the proposed friction testing method can be applied to effectively evaluate the friction condition in bulk metal forming processes.
This paper introduces a method to estimate the contact-force of the leg of a walking robot and proposes a solution to a shortcoming of the previous study. This shortcoming was the deteriorating performance when estimating the contact-force whenever the rotation of each joint was reversed. It occurred because the friction-torque of each joint was not considered. In order to solve this problem, a friction-torque model for a robot leg was developed based on repetitive experimentation and used to improve the contact-force estimation performance. We verified the performance of the proposed method experimentally.
This paper presents a high-speed performance analysis of ball bearings with ceramic balls under thrust loads. The sliding velocity profiles between a ball and raceways were obtained by the 3-D quasi-dynamic equations of motion including both centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment derived by vector matrix algebra. The friction at the contact areas was obtained by the Bair-Winer's non-Newtonian rheological model and the Hamrock-Dowson's central film thickness in EHL analysis. The nonlinear equations were solved by the Newton-Raphson method and the underrelaxation iterative method. The friction torques and ball behaviors with various loads, ball materials, and contact angles were predicted by this model. It was shown that the friction torque was sensitive to thrust load and contact angle, and that the friction torque and the pitch angle of the bearing with ceramic balls are smaller than those of the bearing with steel balls.
