  • This study analyzed the causes of frost damage and freezing depth for concrete ballast sites in the Gangwon mountainous area, which has a high freezing index, and considered the equation for freezing depth in concrete roadbeds. Comparing the freezing depth tendencies of concrete roadbeds in the Gangwon mountainous area and Gangwon area, it was found that the freezing depth of concrete roadbeds was higher than that of the Gangwon area when the freezing index was less than 400. However, in sections with a freezing index greater than 400, the freezing depth was higher in the Gangwon area than in the concrete roadbeds. This study proposed an equation for computing the freezing depth in the Gangwon area to provide basic data for establishing preventive measures against frost damage during railway and road construction projects in the Gangwon region.

  • In this research freezing depth analyses were performed for the recent 9 project field sites using FrostAM which is a freezing analysis model developed recently within the country and a model based on regional environmental factors and physical properties of pavement materials. The environmental factors needed for freezing depth analysis were obtained from the meteorological agency website. And there were laboratory tests and analyses using a measuring device for properties of unsaturated soil for the field site samples across country to obtain hydrographical properties among physical properties. The freezing depths analyzed by FrostAM were deeper in the range of 14cm~44cm than those based on freezing index. It is considered that the freezing depths based on freezing index were overestimated. And there are considerable differences among the freezing depths based on freezing index which were designed by different designers.

  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the soil freezing depth and pattern with freezing measuring instruments during 1988-l989 winter season in Kangwon province. Freezing measuring instrument was made with acrylic pipes which were consisted of inner and outer parts. Inner pipe was filled with 0.01 % methylene blue solution and rubber hose to protect pipe breakdown by solution freezing. Freezing measurements were carried out by observing discoloration of methylene blue solution. Moisture content of evergreen trees and ground cover plants was also examined in the winter season. The observed results are as follows: 1.In the land of I OOM above sea level, soil freezing depth became deeper as the sum of Accumulated degree-days of temperature below 0˚C(0˚C . day) increased: Soil freezing depth was 30-40cm at l00˚C, 42-43cm at 150˚C, and 47cm at 200˚C day 2.Soil freezing with vinyl mulching was less developed by l3cm at l00˚C with sum of subzero temperature, by l7cm at 200˚C than that of the bare ground. Soil of rich hulls mulching with 4Ocm was not frozen until soil freezing at the bare ground was developed to 25cm depth. 3.Cashmeron mulching was more effective than felt mulching in the heat insulation of soil. 4.Thawing of soil was done from the lowest part of the frozen in the ground to upward in the beginning and after that it was done from the surface of frozen soil to downward. Finally thawing was completed at the middle of frozen soil.

  • This paper statistically analyses the freezing soil by frost group and frost depth in Korea with data from soil testing in the Korea National Housing Corporation, the climate data provided by the Central Weather Office and the data on the frost depth from the National Construction Laboratory Institute. In this paper, freezing variable are analysed such as percentage finer than 0.02 m by weight, plasticity index, freezing index, water contents of soil and frost depth etc‥‥ The result of the analysis is as follows. 1) The frost depth of Korea depends on the properties of soil rather thank the characte fistic of area. 2) The distribution map of design freezing index in 57 cities is drawn up with the maxi- mum freezing index, during past 14 years, calculated by the average of the air temperature observed four times(03 : 00.09 00, 15 : 00, 21 : 00) a day. 3) By correcting the OLS line estimated from the relationship between freezing index and frost depth, a method of utlizing the line with the upper confidence limit of 99.9% int-distribution as predicted maximum frost depth is newly introduced.

  • To prevent the lowering of structural capability due to freezing and thawing in cold winter, numerous researches on frost heaving have been performed. As the result, the freezing index contour map of the Korea peninsula has been made for the design of the anti-freezing layer of pavements. However, the validity of the anti-freezing layer needs to be evaluated because systematic investigations on the variation of freezing depth with the thickness and material types of pavement layers and the configuration of the ground have been rarely performed. The freezing index of the Korea Highway Corporation test road site was calculated and the freezing depths of the concrete and asphalt pavements of the test road were investigated using the ambient and pavement temperature and water content. In addition, the investigated freezing depths were compared to the values estimated by existing freezing depth models. This is the preliminary study on the freezing-related data measured at the test road. The results with higher reliability will be produced by the long-term accumulation of the data and the analysis on it.

  • PURPOSES: This study is to evaluate a ground water level effect on frost heaving in road pavements. METHODS: The effects of water table on frost heaving in pavement systems were evaluated from the mechanical analysis using FROST program. The input parameters and boundary conditions were determined by considering climates, pavement sections, and material properties specially subgrade soil types in Korea. RESULTS: When the water table located above the freezing depth, amount of frost heaving caused by freezing the water in pavement itself was big enough to damage in pavement system, although pavement system consists of fully non-frost-susceptible materials with sufficient thickness of anti-freezing layer. The amount of frost heaving was decreased rapidly with increasing the distance between the water table and freezing depth. CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that there is no engineering problems related with frost heaving in practical sense when the distance between freezing depth and water table is over 1.5m for having subgrade soils less than 50% of #200 sieve passing to meet specification on quality control in Korea.

  • Rock slopes along the road or railroad are affected by temperature and therefore experienced iterative freezing-thawing process between winter and early spring. The purpose of this study is to analyze the stability of rock slopes which are influenced by the deterioration due to the freezing-thawing. The analysis is the homogenization method which evaluates the strength property of discontinuous rock mass, and as a strength failure criterion, Drucker-Prager failure criterion is used. The deterioration property of real rock is obtained by a freezing-thawing laboratory test of tuff and this property of deterioration is quantitated and used as a basic data of stability analysis for rock mass. To evaluate the deterioration depth due to the freezing-thawing in situ rock slope, one dimensional heat conductivity equation is used and as the result I can find that the depth of which is affected by a temperature. After the freezing-thawing depth of model slope is determined, we analyze the pattern of rock mass stength value of rock slope model which excesses the limit of self-load.

  • Recently, freezing index of frost penetration depth estimation used in Korea is applied according to the standard, published by MOLIT in 2003. However, it is difficult to consider can not be determined to standard reflects weather conditions in accordance with the current climate warming or abnormally high temperature. Also the temperature should be considered local variables because heavy local gap. Therefore, this study is through the freezing index presented in MOLIT's code by calculating the frost penetration depth determining whether the adequacy and conducted a study to apply in the field. As a result, when the Elevation 100m to standard in Incheon frost penetration depth is found to be 50.8cm.
