In this study, analytic solution and finite element formulation for the free vibration analysis of thin-walled circular arch, based on linearized virtual work and Vlasov's assumption, including restrained warping effect and second order terms of finite semitangential rotations, is presented. The total potential energy is derived by applying the Hellinger-Reissner principle. In this formulation, all displacement parameters of deformation are defined at the centroid axis. For the finite element formulation, the two node cubic Hermitian polynomials are utilized as shape functions. In special case, potential energy functional of thin-walled curved beam with monosymmetric cross section is derived. From this methodology, analytic solution for the free vibration of monosymmetric circular arch with simply supported is derived. In order to illustrate the accuracy of this study, various parameter studies for free vibration of circular arches are presented and compared with numerical solution analyzed by the FEM using straight beam element.
The solvent effects on the relative free energies of Eu3+ to Yb3+ ion mutation in solution have been investigated using a Monte Carlo simulation of statistical perturbation theory (SPT). Our results agree well with available data that were obtained by others. Particularly, the results of water (SPC/E) solvent are almost identical with experimental data. For the present Eu3+ and Yb3+ ions, the relative free energies of solvation vs. Born’s function of bulk solvents decrease with increasing Born’s function of bulk solvents. There is also good agreement between the calculated structural properties in this study and the published works obtained by computer simulation and experimental work.
Perovskite solar cells have received increasing attention in recent years because of their outstanding power conversion efficiency (exceeding 22%). However, they typically contain toxic Pb, which is a limiting factor for industrialization. We focused on preparing Pb-free perovskite films of Ag-Bi-I trivalent compounds. Perovskite thin films with improved optical properties were obtained by applying an anti-solvent (toluene) washing technique during the spin coating of perovskites. In addition, the surface condition of the perovskite film was optimized using a multi-step thermal annealing treatment. Using the optimized process parameters, $AgBi_2I_7$ perovskite films with good absorption and improved planar surface topography (root mean square roughness decreased from 80 to 26 nm) were obtained. This study is expected to open up new possibilities for the development of high performance $AgBi_2I_7$ perovskite solar cells for applications in Pb-free energy conversion devices.
No matter how intense magnetic flux it contains, a coronal magnetic structure has little free magnetic energy when a composing magnetic field is close to a potential field, or current-free field where no volume electric current flows. What kind of electric current system is developed is therefore a key to evaluating the activity of a coronal magnetic structure. Since the corona is a highly conductive medium, a coronal electric current tends to survive without being dissipated, so the free magnetic energy provided by a coronal electric current is normally hard to release in the corona. This work aims at clarifying how a coronal electric current system is structurally developed into a system responsible for producing a flare. Toward this end, we perform diffusive MHD simulations for the emergence of a magnetic flux tube with different twist applied to it, and go through the process of structuring a coronal electric current in a twisted flux tube emerging to form a coronal magnetic structure. Interestingly, when a strongly twisted flux tube emerges, there spontaneously forms a structure inside the flux tube, where a coronal electric current changes flow pattern from field-aligned dominant to cross-field dominant. We demonstrate that this structure plays a key role in releasing free magnetic energy via rapid dissipation of a coronal electric current, thereby producing a flare.
Flow characteristics of a round jet with swirl number of 0.17 have been investigated using a hot -wire anemometry in the initial region within 10D(exit diameter). Swirl effects were observed by comparing centerline flow characteristics, similarities and turbulent budgets of a swirl jet and a free jet, respectively. To obtain similarity of the radial profiles mean velocity and higher moments were measured at the vertical pl anes, located at 2.5, 5.0, 7.5D, 10D, respectively. The centerline velocity characteristics were also measured. It is turned out that similarities of mean and Reynolds stress are established. The jet boundary has wider width than that of a free jet and the shear stress also becomes stronger. In addition the centerline decay becomes faster than that of the free jet, indicating that the swirl induces more entrainment in the initial region of the swirl Jet by transferring the axial mean kinetic energy into the swirl energy and, therefore, has wider boundary, compared with that of free jet.
In this study, the oxyfluorination of PAN-based carbon fibers was undertaken at room temperature using fluorine-oxygen mixtures, and the influence of oxyfluorination on properties was investigated. The surface characteristics of the modified fiber were determined by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and dynamic contact angle analyzer. The oxyfluorination of carbon fibers was one of the more effective methods to increase surface wettability by the formation of semicovalent C-F bond and C-O bond depending on reaction conditions. When oxygen mole fraction is increased from 0.5 to 0.9, it is probable that attached fluorine atoms at the surface of the fibers reacted with other components. As increased oxyfluorination time and decreased its pressures, semi-covalent peak is increased at 0.5 of oxygen mole fraction. The total surface free energy of oxyfluorinated carbon fibers decreased with increasing oxygen mole fraction over 0.5. These results indicate that the surface of carbon fibers became much more hydrophilic after the short oxyfluorination. The surface free energy of oxyfluorinated carbon fibers progressively decreased after 10 min treatment. The polar components of surface free energies were however, significantly higher for all oxyfluorinated samples than that for the untreated carbon fiber.
Hydrophobicity is the key concept to understand the water plays in protein folding, protein aggregation, and protein-protein interaction. Traditionally, the hydrophobicity of protein is defined based on the scales of the hydrophobicity of residue, assuming that the hydrophobicity of free amino acids is maintained. Here, we explore how the hydrophobicity of constituting amino acids in protein rely on the protein context, in particular, on the total charge and secondary structures of a protein. To this end, we calculate and investigate the hydration free energy of three short proteins based on the integral-equation theory of liquids. We find that the hydration free energy of charged amino acids is significantly affected by the protein total charge and exhibits contrasting behavior depending on the protein total charge being positive or negative. We also observe that amino acids in the ${\beta}-sheets$ display more enhanced the hydrophobicity than amino acids in the loop, whereas those in the ${\alpha}-helix$ do not clearly show such a tendency. And the salt-bridge forming amino acids also exhibit increase of the hydrophobicity than that with no salt bridge. Our results provide novel insights into the hydrophobicity of amino acids, and will be valuable for rationalizing and predicting the strength of water-mediated interaction involved in the biological activity of proteins.

In the present study, the characteristics of upward bubble flow were experimentally investigated in a liquid bath. The velocity of upward bubble flow was calculated for two different experimental conditions:1) bubble flow without kinetic energy 2) bubble flow with kinetic energy. Bubble flow without kinetic energy starts to undergo the effect of buoyancy l0cm away from the nozzle. Whereas. kinetic energy is dominant before 30 cm away from the nozzle in bubble flow but after this point kinetic energy and inertial force are applied on bubble flow at the same time In addition, as the flow rate increases the maximum velocity point moves to the nozzle. The velocity Profiles near free surface is extremely irregular due to surface flow. Gas volume fraction is high near the nozzle due to gas concentration. but decreases with the increasement of axial position. Gas volume fraction does not vary after the axial position, z=60 in spite of the increasement of flow.
The objective of this study is to improve the accuracy of damage detection using natural frequency and modal strain energy. The following approaches are used to achieve the goal. First, modal strain energy is introduced and newly GA-based damage detection technique using natural frequency and modal strain energy is proposed. Next, to verify efficiency of the proposed technique, damage scenarios for free-free beams are designed and the vibration modal tests as damage cases are conducted. Finally, feasibility of proposed technique is verified in comparison with a GA-based damage detection technique using natural frequency and mode shape.
