A Research on the design method of New Media Architecture in Sendai mediatheque - Based on the Sendai Mediatheque by Toyo Ito - (뉴 미디어 건축의 설계방법에 관한 고찰 - 伊東豊雄의 센다이 미디어테크를 中心으로 -)

  • The Propose of this research was to consider how the New Media Architecture was applied to contemporary architecture according to the analysis of the design method process of Toyo Ito. Sendai Mediatheque by Toyo Ito stands as one of the most symbolic statement In New Media architecture. The four principal architectural elements of the Mediatheque are the digital image, the continuous space, the tube, and the skin facade. The digital image express forms of communication, person-to-person and person-to-thing, and they vary according to the media utilized on each level. The three skin elements of the Mediatheque are a double skin of MPG, skin of louvers, skin of fine-floor decking. The tubes act as columns while enveloping light, air, water, electricity the passage of people, as well as the means of transferring material. The thirteen tubes of different sizes prevent the erection of wall and suggest places instead of rooms. Instead of being limited to certain specified actions in clearly defined rooms, people are free to choose places for their actions in the continuous space.

  • Numerous regulations have been introduced and a various kinds of institutional intervention have been made by government against the occupational safety and health problems. However, it was serious issue to the workers that what can be claimed by those who meet with apparently harmful and risky working conditions in their social systems. In the view point of employees, their right to be free from unacceptable risk and hazards has not been clearly defined. Therefore, workers have very limited rights to take any actions unless employer or government do their actions. It is believed that this undesirable conditions resulted from Jack of legal definition of workers' right to work in the safe and healthy environment. It has been found increased social pressure to make intervention to the industry to protect workers' health. Also, increased pressure has been kept for deregulation. This conflict lay the current situation in dilemma. The concept of the working environmental right has been developed and discussed in this study to overcome this trade-off confliction. It should be clearly separated between legal aspects and administrative and Policy area to make the regulations effective. Strong enforcement to the industry based on the law should be minimum, however, it should be practically effective in the aspect of workers' right. Administration and policy should be focused on supportive and leading activities to achieve the ultimate goal, safe and healthy working environment. It is concluded that establishment of working environmental right would satisfy workers and industry and it would result in improvement workers' environment and conditions.

  • Attempts were to investigate the effects of 'Bojungikgi-tang' on the digestive system, blood pressure and diuresis. The results showed that relaxing action was shown on the isolated ileum in mice and that strong antagonistic actions were seen on $BaCl_2$, acetylcholine and histamine-induced contraction of the ileum in mice and guinea-pigs that the relaxing effect of the intestinal smooth muscle was recognized. Inhibitory effects on transport rate in the small intestine of mice and castor oil-induced catharsis in mice were noted. Inhibitory action on the secretion of gastric juice, pH ascending effect and decreasing effect of the free acidity and total acidity were recognized. Continuous hypotensive action was seen, but when the vagus nerve was cut, hypotensive action was remarkably decreased. The diuretic effect was also recognized.

  • One of the most fundamental functions required for an intelligent agent is to estimate its current position based upon uncertain sensor data. In this paper, we explain the implementation of a robot localization system using Particle filters, which are the most effective one of the probabilistic localization methods, and then present the result of experiments for evaluating the performance of our system. Through conducting experiments to compare the effect of the noise-free model with that of the noisy state transition model considering inherent errors of robot actions, we show that it can help improve the performance of the Particle filter localization to apply a state transition model closely approximating the uncertainty of real robot actions.

  • A conflict of interest is usually defined as a set of circumstances that creates a risk that professional judgments or actions regarding a primary interest will be unduly influenced by a secondary interest. In general, a conflict of interest can be classified as either a financial or a non-financial one. A financial conflict of interest reportedly occurs frequently in medical (and psychiatric) research and practice and is associated with a greater likelihood of reporting results favorable to the intervention being studied. A non-financial conflict of interest may occur in psychiatric research and practice as a result of the so-called "allegiance effect." It is very important that clinicians and researchers in the field of psychiatry be aware that their field is vulnerable to both financial and non-financial conflicts of interest. Considering that it is impossible in modern psychiatry to be completely free from possible conflicts of interest, the best way to manage a conflict of interest is disclosure based on the principles of transparency. Actions that might lead to conflicts of interest should be avoided as much as possible.

Differential Antioxidant Effects of Ambroxol, Rutin, Glutathione and Harmaline

  • The protective actions of ambroxol, rutin, glutathione and harmaline on oxidative damages of various tissue components were compared. The mechanisms by which they prevent oxidative tissue damages were explored. Lipid peroxidation of liver microsomes induced by combinations of $Fe^{2+}$ and ascorbate or $Fe^{+3}$, ADP and NADPH was inhibited by $50\; \muM$ of rutin, ambroxol, harmaline and glutathione. Ambroxol ($100\; \muM$) inhibited the degradation of hyaluronic acid by $Fe^{2+}$, $H_2O$_2$ and ascorbate, and it was greater than that of harmaline, whereas hyaluronic acid degradation was not prevented by rutin and glutathione. The compounds used ($100\; \muM$) did not protect the degradation of cartilage collagen by xanthine and xanthine oxidase. Rutin, glutathione and harmaline decreased the degradation of IgG by xanthine and xanthine oxidate, while ambroxol did not attenuate degradation of IgG. Glutathione showed a scavenging action on $H_2O_2$. The compounds all showed scavenging actions on hydroxyl radical. Ambroxol and harmaline exhibited quenching effects en singlet oxygen. In conclusion, ambroxol, rutin, glutathione and harmaline may exert protective effects differently on tissue components against oxidative attack depend on kind of tissue component and free radical.

Neuroprotective Effect of Taurine against Oxidative Stress-Induced Damages in Neuronal Cells

  • Taurine, 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid, is an abundant free amino acid present in brain cells and exerts many important biological functions such as anti-convulsant, modulation of neuronal excitability, regulation of learning and memory, anti-aggressiveness and anti-alcoholic effects. In the present study, we investigated to explore whether taurine has any protective actions against oxidative stress-induced damages in neuronal cells. ERK I/II regulates signaling pathways involved in nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and plays a role in the regulation of cell growth, and apoptosis. We have found that taurine significantly inhibited AMPA induced cortical depolarization in the Grease Gap assays using rat cortical slices. Taurine also inhibited AMPA-induced neuronal cell damage in MTT assays in the differentiated SH-SY5Y cells. When the neuronal cells were treated with $H_2O_2$, levels of NO were increased; however, taurine pretreatment decreased the NO production induced by $H_2O_2$ to approximately normal levels. Interestingly, taurine treatment stimulated ERK I/II activity in the presence of AMPA or $H_2O_2$, suggesting the potential role of ERK I/II in the neuroprotection of taurine. Taken together, taurine has significant neuroprotective actions against AMPA or $H_2O_2$ induced damages in neuronal cells, possibly via activation of ERK I/II.

Influence of Electrolyte on the Actions of Naloxone (Naloxone의 효과(效果)에 미치는 전해질(電解質)의 영향(影響))

  • In the electrically stimulated guinea-pig ileum, which was incubated in the modified Krebs-Henseleit bicarbonate buffer solution containing various concentrations of electrolytes at $4^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours, the effect of naloxone on the inhibitory action of morphine was investigated. Incubation potentiated the inhibitory action of morphine. In the incubated preperation, the inhibitory action of morphine was potentiated in the $Na^+\;75mM$, and $K^+\;2.9mM$ groups, while that action of morphine was reduced in the $Ca^{++}\;3.6mM,\;Mg^{++}$ free and $Mn{++}\;0.2mM$ groups. Naloxone in incubation media potentiated in the inhibitory action of morphine. In the preparations which were incubated in various concentrations of electrolytes plus naloxone, the action of morphine was reduced in $Na^+\;75mM,\;K^+\;2.9mM$, and $Ca^{++}\;3.6mM$ groups, while that action of morphine was potentiated in $Mg^{++}$free and $Mn{++}\;0.2mM$ groups. Naloxone antagonised those actions of morphine. However, $pA_2$ values for naloxone (index for affinity for antagonist) was not changed. Thus changes in the inhitory action of morphine caused by incubation are probably not the result of changes in the affinity of receptor, but due to the alterations in the events which precede or follow the receptor binding by incubations.

Effects of Cortex Ulmi pumilae on Human HaCaT keratinocyte and its antioxidant and anti-cancer effect (유백피(楡白皮) 추출물이 인간의 피부 세포 재생 및 악성 흑색종 세포에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective : Cortex of Ulmi pumilae(CUP) has been used to treat several diseases including boil, swelling, and scabies etc. Recently, CUP was known to have wrinkle care and whitening actions. But, It's exact mechanisms are unclear. Methods : The present study was designed to investigate effects of CUP on Human HaCaT keratinocyte and malignant melanoma cells such as SK-MEL-2 and B16F10 in terms of cell viabilities, proliferations, DPPH free radical scavenging activities, oxygen free radical productions and inhibitory action on elastase activities. Results : CUP accelerated proliferation of HaCaT keratinocytes in the lower concentration. CUP also prevented cell death of HaCaT induced by Hydrogen peroxide, which products oxygen free radicals. On the contrary, CUP did not affect proliferations of SK-MEL-2 or B16F10. Futhermore, CUP showed inhibitory action against SK-MEL-2 proliferation at the concentration of $500{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ In addition, CUP was shown to have DPPH free radical scavenging activities and also have inhibitory effects on elastase activities too. On the fluorescent examinations, the present author knows that CUP elevated production levels of oxygen free radicals in malignant melanoma cell, SK-MEL-2. Conclusions : These results suggest that CUP has possibilities of usage for functional cosmetics which have wrinkle care and whitening activities and related mechanisms are involved in inhibition of elastase action and acceleration of oxidative stress in melanoma cell.

  • It is widely recognized that human beings have moral responsibility for their actions because they have free will to choose and control their acts. Unlike natural phenomena, however, human acts cannot be interpreted with simple, visible ones. Human acts are quite different from natural phenomena because they come about through a number of complicated, invisible phases taking place in our mind. In addition, human actions are under the influence of internal and external factors. Those various internal and external factors are divided into four sectors as follows; (1) the factors that can fall under control of our free will, (2) the factors in the interim phase that could come under our control, (3) the factors that are partially determined that we cannot choose or control over, and (4) the factors that completely determined, and can't be chosen or controlled. we have to pay attention to the fact that we can choose or control the internal and external factors that influence human action. However, there are still factors that are impossible to choose or control with our will. So it is highly unreasonable to hold accountable for actors by means of the factors that can't be chosen or controlled. Hence, the society should be also accountable for the acts of actors influenced by heredity and environment. For this, Politics should affect the external, undesirable, and uncontrollable factors beyond actors power. Education has to exert its influence over the internal and genetic factors by instilling sound values in human mind, too. It is because happy and desirable future will be possible by giving equal opportunities to us including the youth.
