Transfer is the critical issue of producing high-quality and scalable graphene electronic devices. However, conventional transfer processes require the removal of an underlying metal layer by wet etching process, which induces significant economic and environmental problems. We propose the etching-free mechanical releasing of graphene using polymer adhesives. A fracture mechanics approach was introduced to understand the releasing mechanism and ensure highyield process. It is shown that the thickness of adhesive and target substrate affect the transferability of graphene. Based on experimental and fracture mechanics simulation results, we further observed that compliant adhesives can reduce the adhesive stress during the transfer, which also enhances the success probability of graphene transfer.
Fracture mechanics approach can be severly hampered unless considerable detailed specific knowledge is available. The problem of railway wheel-rail system fatigue design is currently undertaken by using assumed conservative design procedures. However, although the failure rate is low, the consequences of any such failure can be far reaching. It has been demonstrated that the tools available for effective management have limits. In the present study, the safety evaluation based on fracture mechanics is carried out. The critical crack size and remaining lifetime are calculated on the wheel for high-speed train.
In this paper, a hybrid scaled boundary finite element and finite volume method (SBFEM-FVM) is proposed for simulating hydraulic-fracture propagation in brittle concrete materials. As a semi-analytical method, the scaled boundary finite element method is introduced for modelling concrete crack propagation under both an external force and water pressure. The finite volume method is employed to model the water within the crack and consider the relationship between the water pressure and the crack opening distance. The cohesive crack model is used to analyse the non-linear fracture process zone. The numerical results are compared with experimental data, indicating that the F-CMOD curves and water pressure changes under different loading conditions are approximately the same. Different types of water pressure distributions are also studied with the proposed coupled model, and the results show that the internal water pressure distribution has an important influence on crack propagation.
Displacements near crack and stress intensity factor (SIF) are key parameters to solve rock failure issue when using fracture mechanics. In order to study the horizontal displacement and stress intensity factor of the mode I fracture, a series of three-point bending tests of granite specimens with central notch were carried out. The evolution of horizontal displacements of precast notch and crack tip opening displacements (CTOD) were analyzed based on the digital image correlation (DIC) method. Stress intensity factors for three-point bending beams with arbitrary span-to-width ratios(S/W) were calculated by using the WU-Carlsson analytical weight function for edge-crack finite width plate and the analytical solution of un-cracked stress by Filon. The present study provides a high efficient and accurate method for fracture mechanics analysis of the three-point bending granite beams.
This paper illustrates an experimental study on a self compacting polymer concrete called isobeton made of polyurethane foam and expanded clay. Several experiments were conducted to characterize the physic-mechanical properties of the considered material. Application of the Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) and determining the toughness of two isobetons based on Belgian and Italian clay, was conducted to determine the stress intensity factor $K_{IC}$ and the rate of releasing energy $G_{IC}$. The material considered was tested under static and dynamic loadings for two different samples with $10{\times}10{\times}40$ and $10{\times}15{\times}40cm$ dimensions. The result obtained by the application of the Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) shows that is optimistic and fulfilled the physic-mechanical requirement of the study.
Longitudinal fracture in a functionally graded beam configuration was studied analytically with taking into account the non-linear behavior of the material. A cantilever beam with two longitudinal cracks located symmetrically with respect to the centroid was analyzed. The material was functionally graded along the beam width as well as along the beam length. The fracture was studied in terms of the strain energy release rate. The influence of material gradient, crack location along the beam width, crack length and material non-linearity on the fracture behavior was investigated. It was shown that the analytical solution derived is very useful for parametric analyses of the non-linear longitudinal fracture behavior. It was found that by using appropriate material gradients in width and length directions of the beam, the strain energy release rate can be reduced significantly. Thus, the results obtained in the present paper may be applied for optimization of functionally graded beam structure with respect to the longitudinal fracture performance.
The purpose of this work is to predict ductile fracture of structural steel under extremely low cyclic loading experienced in earthquake. A cumulative damage model is proposed on the basis of an existing damage model originally aiming to predict fracture under monotonic loading. The cumulative damage model assumes that damage does not grow when stress triaxiality is below a threshold and fracture occurs when accumulated damage reach unit. The model was implemented in ABAQUS software. The cumulative damage model parameters for steel base metal, weld metal and heat affected zone were calibrated, respectively, through testing and finite element analyses of notched coupon specimens. The damage evolution law in the notched coupon specimens under different loads was compared. Finally, in order to examine the engineering applicability of the proposed model, the fracture performance of beam-column welded joints reported by previous researches was analyzed based on the cumulative damage model. The analysis results show that the cumulative damage model is able to successfully predict the cracking location, fracture process, the crack initiation life, and the total fatigue life of the joints.
