  • Cable-stayed structures provide a lot of possibilities toward the development of innovative structural forms regarding their expressiveness and uniqueness. Such cable-stayed structures, as form-active structures, can obtain a family of alternatives by changing parameters for defining geometric shapes. The concept of graphic statics is utilized to explain the relationship between the load path and structural forms because the load path of cable structures has something to do with their structural geometry. Moreover, this structural geometry has a dominant effect on both structural efficiency and structural elegancy. The proposed design method in this study will help designers conceive innovative structural forms considering structural safety, material efficiency, and structural art altogether.

  • Bridge design is a problem-solving process whose level of design quality strongly depends on how to relate design constraints with feasibile design objectives in conceptual design stage. This paper has focused on how to create bridge shapes using creativity toward better looking bridge appearances in conceptual design stage. The term creativity in this study does not refer to the creation of something from nothing but to the reorganization of existing concepts. Such creativity includes not only enlarging the number of structural forms which is established based on the relationship between form and statics but also combining bridge design with artistic components like an architectural style. Also, this study has investigated the usefulness of graphic statics as a structural analysis tool showing the analysis results visually to generate bridge forms in conceptual design stage. It is expected that the proposed way of generating bridge forms in this study to be used not only for practical purpose but also for educational purpose regarding the aesthetic bridge design serving as a new education paradigm.

  • The D-optimal design criterion for precise parameter estimation in nonlinear regression analysis is called the determinant criterion because the determinant of a matrix is to be maximized. In this thesis, we derive the gradient and the Hessian of the determinant criterion, and apply a QR decomposition for their efficient computations. We also propose an approximate form of the Hessian matrix which can be calculated from the first derivative of a model function with respect to the design variables. These equations can be used in a Gauss-Newton type iteration procedure.

  • Nowadays computer graphic softwares have opened a lot of potential by providing parametric modeling and generative algorithms which are useful not only to describe various geometrical shapes but also to implement a designer's intent in terms of modules systematically. This study has proposed a way of developing a module for generating preliminary structural configuration using such potential computer graphics. Especially parametric modeling and generative algorithm are utilized to define various design alternatives, and moreover use of dynamic graphics enables designers to generate a structural form on one side and a force flow diagram correspondingly provided on the other. This ultimately leads to rational preliminary design of a structural form considering its force flow.

  • Geometric form of a suspension bridge that uses load-sensitive cables takes on not only resisting loads but also becoming a visually sensible shillouette. This study has proposed a preliminary structural form planning for a suspension bridge following force flow by adopting the two possibilities of the graphic statics. First, the force polygon allows alternative load paths for the same loading condition. Second, a new structural form for the newly developed load path can be constructed using the reciprocal principle that exits between a structure space and the corresponding force polygon. Major structural form parameters that affect both structural and aesthetic aspecs are first identified. The relationships between structural forms and the corresponding force polygons are then investigated for the identified parameters. Upon the investigation, a stepwise process is developed for a preliminary structural form planning for a suspension bridge. The proposed structural form planning method is general that can be easily expanded to generate design alternatives of similar form-active structural systems. It is also expected that this method will be used as an educational tool to explain the interrelationships between structural forms and their force flows.

  • The Jacobian and singularity analysis of parallel robots is necessary to analyze robot motion. The derivations of the Jacobian matrix and singularity configuration are complicated and have no geometrical earning in the velocity form of the Jacobian matrix. In this study, the screw theory is used to derive the Jacobian of parallel robots. The statics form of the Jacobian has a geometrical meaning. In addition, singularity analysis can be performed by using the geometrical values. Furthermore, this study shows that the screw theory is applicable to redundantly actuated robots as well as non-redundant robots.

  • The work presented in this paper describes a Hidden Markov Model(HMM)-based framework for face recognition and face detection. The observation vectors used to characterize the statics of the HMM are obtained using the coefficients of the Karhuman-Loves Transform(KLT). The face recognition method presented in this paper reduces significantly the computational complexity of previous HMM-based face recognition systems, while slightly improving the recognition rate. In addition, the suggested method is more effective than the exiting ones in face extraction in terms of accuracy and others even under complex changes to the surroundings such as lighting.

  • The failure of reinforced concrete structures in recent earthquakes caused concern about the performance of beam column joints. Confinement of joint is one of the ways to improve the performance of beam column joints during earthquakes. This paper describes an experimental study of exterior beam-column joints with two non-conventional reinforcement arrangements. One exterior beam-column joint of a six story building in seismic zone III of India was designed for earthquake loading. The transverse reinforcement of the joint assemblages were detailed as per IS 13920:1993 and IS 456:2000 respectively. The proposed nonconventional reinforcement was provided in the form of diagonal reinforcement on the faces of the joint, as a replacement of stirrups in the joint region for joints detailed as per IS 13920 and as additional reinforcement for joints detailed as per IS 456. These newly proposed detailing have the basic advantage of reducing the reinforcement congestion at the joint region. In order to study and compare the performance of joint with different detailing, four types of one-third scale specimens were cast (two numbers in each type). The main objective of the present study is to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed reinforcement detailing. All the specimens were tested under reverse cyclic loading, with appropriate axial load. From the test results, it was found that the beam-column joint having confining reinforcement as per IS: 456 with nonconventional detailing performed well. Test results indicate that the non-conventionally detailed specimens, Type 2 and Type 4 have an improvement in average ductility of 16% and 119% than their conventionally detailed counter parts (Type1 and Type 3). Further, the joint shear capacity of the Type 2 and Type 4 specimens are improved by 8.4% and 15.6% than the corresponding specimens of Type 1 and Type 3 respectively. The present study proposes a closed form expression to compute the yield and ultimate load of the system. This is accomplished using the theory of statics and the failure pattern observed during testing. Good correlation is found between the theoretical and experimental results.
