  • Over 50 morphologically distinctive soil Streptomyces were isolated from various Jocations in the Yongin area in Korea and visually screened for dye-decoloring activities on an agar plate. Two Streptomyces species (AD001 and ND002) showed strong dye-decoloring activities on the plate containing congo-red and new-fuchin dyes, respectively. Also, the liquid culture supernatants of these species showed 2,4-dicholophenol (DCP) oxidation activities only in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, a characteristic of Actinomycetes lignin-peroxidase (ALiP)-P3 isoform found in dye-degrading S. viridosporus T7A and S. badius 252. Based on their dye-decoloring capabilities and the 2,4-DCP oxidation kinetic data, it is suggested that these Streptomyces secrete not-yet-characterized extracelluar enzyme(s), whose activities are very similar to the ALiP-P3 enzyme.

  • In 2019, 43 bacterial strains were isolated from food, soil, marine environments, human, and animals related sources from the Republic of Korea. Based on the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence, these isolates were allocated to the phyla Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes as unrecorded species in Korea. The 10 Bacteroidetes strains were classified into the families Bacteroidaceae, Chitinophagaceae, Cytophagaceae, Flavobacteriaceae, and Prolixibacteraceae (of the orders Bacteroidales, Chitinophagales, Cytophagales, Flavobacteriales, and Marinilabiliales, respectively). The 33 Firmicutes strains belonged to the families Bacillaceae, Paenibacillaceae, Planococcaceae, Staphylococcaceae, Clostridiaceae, Lachnospiraceae, Peptostreptococcaceae, Enterococcaceae, Lactobacillaceae, Leuconostocaceae, and Streptococcaceae (of the orders Bacillales, Clostridiales, and Lactobacillales). These unrecorded bacteria were determined based on taxonomic criterion (>98.7%; 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). In addition, their phylogenetic affiliation, as well as cell and colony morphologies, staining reactions, and physiological and biochemical properties were investigated. Therefore, we report 43 isolates as unrecorded species, and described basic features, isolation source, and locations of these strains.

  • Acanthopanx senticosus (Araliaceae) is a long-lived woody species primarily distributed throughout East Asia. This species is regarded as medically and ecologically important woody plants in Korea. To identify the variation of the RAPD patterns between domestic and foreign A. senticosus species, 22 random primers were applied to Korean A. senticosus and A. senticosus for. inermis, Chinese and Russian A. senticosus. Six primers of them could be used to discriminate the origins and 58 polymorphisms among 92 scored DNA fragments. Six bands are specific for Korean A. senticosus and A. senticosus for. inermis. Especially, three primers, OPD04, OPD11 and OPE10, were useful to differentiate between domestic and foreign Acanthopanax species. RAPD analysis was a useful method to discriminate among A. senticosus populations or accessions and Korean accessions are distinct genetically.

  • An outcome of the study to discover indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea, a total of 26 bacterial species assigned to the classes Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes were isolated from diverse environmental samples collected from soil, tidal flat, freshwater, seawater, wetland, plant roots, and fermented foods. From the high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (>99.0%) and formation of a robust phylogenetic clade with the closest species, it was determined that each strain belonged to each independent and predefined bacterial species. There is no official report that these 26 species have been described in Korea; therefore 14 strains for the order Flavobacteriales and two strains for the order Cytophagales were assigned to the class Bacteroidetes, and 8 strains for the order Bacillales and 4 strains for the order Lactobacillales were assigned to the class Firmicutes are reported for new bacterial species found in Korea. Gram reaction, colony and cell morphology, basic biochemical characteristics, isolation source, and strain IDs are also described in the species description section.

  • Early studies on Korean Sargassum subjenus Bactrophycus were partly started by Kyetzubg(1843,1849), J. Agardh(1889), Cotton(1906), Yendo(1907) and Okamura(1913, 1914, 1915, 1917). Kang(1966) reported 15 species and 4 subspecies of Sargassum subgenus Bactrophycus and their wide distribution on the Korean coasts in his paper [On the geographical distribution of marine algae in Korea], a foundation stone of Korean phycology. In fact, all the Korean coasts and subtidal zone are inhabited by Sargassum plants. They constitute the most part of the primary production and dominant species of benthic algal vegetation. In 1974, L.K. Lee began to study Sargassum monographically as seaweed resources in Korea. The Koreans eat some species of Sargassum (including Hizikia fusiformis) or use them as fertilizer of the farm near the coast. Among the reported 17 species of Korean Fucales, 12 species belong to Bactrophycus. Yoo(1976) dealt with the descriptions, figures, and a key of 24 species of Korean Fucales plants in her M.S. thesis paper. Among them 16 species belonged to Bactrophycus. Even though the above two works were done with thorough observation of the dry specimens kept in the Pusan Fisheries University Herbarium (most of them were identified by Kang, J.W.) and nation-wide collections, great morphological varieties of these taxa made Lee and Yoo hesitate to publish the paper. Instead, the serial chemotaxonomic studies on the geographical variations of Korean Fucales plants(Yoo and Lee, 1988a, 1988b ; Yoo, et al., 1988) were held to solve the problem, while foreign papers (especially both Drs Tseng's and Yoshida's serial works on Bactrophycus). and authenthic specimens that foreign scholors sent to Korean phycologists induced them to find that several species of Sargassum had been misidentified from the beginning. We introduce here Korean Sargassum subgenus Bactrophycus according to Tseng et al. (1985), mentioning briefly the characteristics of the species, key, and distribution on the Korean coasts.

  • Though it is not easy for those who study dendrology to memorize all the scientific names of trees, the names remaines in their memory can facilitate the understanding of foreign technical books. The scientific name of a tree indicates characteristics of shape, color, and other aspects of the tree and by analyzing the name we can see common element found in other scientific names of trees. It is helpful to those who want to memorize and study the scientific names of trees if they understand their etymology. The preseut study is the seconds report of the investigation which aims at examining the etymology of the scientific names of native and foreign trees growing in Korea and their original names not only at the habitat but in Japan, China, England, Germany, and France. While the first report, which was made known in Theses Vol. 9. (The City College of Seoul 1975), is the examination of the scientific names of trees belonging to Gymnospermae, the present report is that of scientific names of trees belonging to Piperales: 2 families, 2 genera and 2 species; and trees belonging to Salicales: 1 family, 3 genera, 44 species, 16 varieties, and 3 forms. As the etymology of the scientific names of trees is made clear, this study will help those who want memorize the scientific names and study foreign technical books and it is also useful for international interchange of trees. The classification is depended chiefly on Dendrology by Prof. Lee Tchang-bok and "Plant Resources of Korea" shown in Biblography No. 10; the native names of trees on Jumoku Daizusetsu by Dr. Uehara; and etymology on A source-Book of Biological Names and Terms by E.C. Jager. In the column of etymology of the scientific names for genera, species, varieties and forms, Gr. stands for Greek, L. for Latin, NL. for New Latin, and genit. for genitive.
