  • This study aims to forecast the exchange rate of the Chinese Yuan against the US Dollar by a combination of different models as proposed by Poon and Granger (2003) during the Covid-19 pandemic. For this purpose, we include three uni-variate time series models, i.e., ARIMA, Naïve, Exponential smoothing, and one multivariate model, i.e., NARDL. This is the first of its kind endeavor to combine univariate models along with NARDL to the best of our knowledge. Utilizing monthly data from January 2011 to December 2020, we predict the Chinese Yuan against the US dollar by two combination criteria i.e. var-cor and equal weightage. After finding out the individual accuracy, the models are then assessed through equal weightage and var-cor methods. Our results suggest that Naïve outperforms all individual & combination of time series models. Similarly, the combination of NARDL and Naïve model again outperformed all of the individual as well as combined models except the Naïve model, with the lowest MAPE value of 0764. The results suggesting that the Chinese Yuan exchange rate against the US Dollar is dependent upon the recent observations of the time series. Further evidence shows that the combination of models plays a vital role in forecasting which commensurate with the literature.

  • BIS(Bus Information System) provides the different information related to buses including predictions of arriving times at stations. BIS have been deployed almost all cities in our country and played active roles to improve the convenience of public transportation systems. Moving average filters, Kalman filter and regression models have been representative in forecasting the arriving times of buses in current BIS. The accuracy in prediction of arriving times depends largely on the forecasting algorithms and traffic conditions considered when forecasting in BIS. In present BIS, the simple prediction algorithms are used only considering the passage times and distances between stations. The forecasting of arrivals, however, have been influenced by the traffic conditions such as traffic signals, traffic accidents and pedestrians ets., and missing data. To improve the accuracy of bus arriving estimates, there are big troubles in building models including the above problems. Hidden Markov Models have been effective algorithms considering various restrictions above. So, we have built the HMM forecasting models for bus arriving times in the current BIS. When building models, the data collected from Sunchean City at 2015 have been utilized. There are about 2298 stations and 217 routes in Suncheon city. The models are developed differently week days and weekend. And then the models are conformed with the data from different districts and times. We find that our HMM models can provide more accurate forecasting than other existing methods like moving average filters, Kalmam filters, or regression models. In this paper, we propose Hidden Markov Model to obtain more precise and accurate model better than Moving Average Filter, Kalman Filter and regression model. With the help of Hidden Markov Model, two different sections were used to find the pattern and verified using Bootstrap process.

  • In case of load forcasting the most important problem is to deal with the load of special days. According this paper presents forecasting method for speaial days peak load by neural networks model. by means of neural networks mothod using the historical past special- days load data, special-days load was directly forecasted, and forecasting % error showed good result as 1∼2% except vacation season in summer Consequently, it is capable of directly special days load, With the models, precision of forecasting was brought satisfactory result. When neural networks was compared with the orthogonal polynomials models at a view of the results of special-days load forecasting, neural networks model which used pattern conversion ratio was more effective on forecasting for special-days load. On the other hand, in case of short special-days load forecasting, both were valid.

  • The objective of this research is to develop a traffic accident forecasting model using traffic accident data in pusan from 1963 to 1991 and then to make short-term forecasts('93~'94) of traffic accidents in pusan. In this research, several forecasting models are developed. They include a multiple regression model, a time-series ARIMA model, a Logistic curve model, and a Gompertz curve model. Among them, the model which shows the most significance in forecasting accuracy is selected as the traffic accident forecasting model. The results of this research are as followings. 1. The existing model such as Smeed model which was developed for foreign countries shows only 47.8% explanation for traffic accident deaths in Korea. 2. A nonliner regression model ($R^2$=0.9432) and a Logistic curve model are appeared to be th gest forecasting models for the number of traffic accidents, and a Logistic curve model shows th most significance in predicting the accident deaths and injuries. 3. The forecasting figures of the traffic accidents in pusan are as followings: . In 1993, 31, 180 accidents are predicted to happen, and 430 persons are predicted to be deaths and 29, 680 persons are predicated to be injuries. . In 1994, 33, 710 accidents are predicted to happen, and 431.persons are predicted to be deat! and 30, 510 persons are predicted to be injuried. Therefore, preventive measures against traffic accidents are certainly required.

  • Solar energy forecasting is essential for (1) power system planning, management, and operation, requiring accurate predictions. It is crucial for (2) ensuring a continuous and sustainable power supply to customers and (3) optimizing the operation and control of renewable energy systems and the electricity market. Recently, research has been focusing on developing solar energy forecasting models that can provide daily plans for power usage and production and be verified in the electricity market. In these prediction models, various data, including solar energy generation and climate data, are chosen to be utilized in the forecasting process. The most commonly used climate data (such as temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, solar radiation, and wind speed) significantly influence the fluctuations in solar energy generation based on weather conditions. Therefore, this paper proposes a hybrid forecasting model by combining the strengths of the Prophet model and the GRU model, which exhibits excellent predictive performance. The forecasting periods for solar energy generation are tested in short-term (2 days, 7 days) and medium-term (15 days, 30 days) scenarios. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms the conventional Prophet model by more than twice in terms of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and surpasses the modified GRU model by more than 1.5 times, showcasing superior performance.

  • Forecasting accuracy is examined in the context of Michigan travel demand. Eight different annual models are used to forecast up to two years ahead, and nine different quarterly models up to four quarters. In the evaluation of annual models' performance, multiple regression performed better than the other methods in both the one year and two year forecasts. For quarterly models, Winters exponential smoothing and the Box-Jenkins method performed better than naive 1 s in the first quarter ahead, but these methods in the second, third, and fourth quarters ahead performed worse than naive 1 s. The sophisticated models did not outperform simpler models in producing quarterly forecasts. The best model, multiple regression, performed slightly better when fitted to quarterly rather than annual data: however, it is not possible to strongly recommend quarterly over annual models since the improvement in performance was slight in the case of multiple regression and inconsistent across the other models. As one would expect, accuracy declines as the forecasting time horizon is lengthened in the case of annual models, but the accuracy of quarterly models did not confirm this result.

  • Neural networks are explored as an alternative to a regres-sion model for prediction of the number of daily household vehicular trips. This study focuses on contrasting a neural network model with a regression model in term of variable selection as well as the appli-cation of these models for prediction of extreme observations, The differences in the models regarding data transformation variable selec-tion and multicollinearity are considered. The results indicate that the neural network model is a viable alternative to the regression model for addressing both messy data problems and limitation in variable structure specification.

  • In this article, several types of hybrid forecasting models are suggested. In particular, hybrid models using the generalized additive model (GAM) are newly suggested as an alternative to those using neural networks (NN). The prediction performances of various hybrid and non-hybrid models are evaluated using simulated time series data. Five different types of seasonal time series data related to an additive or multiplicative trend are generated over different levels of noise, and applied to the forecasting evaluation. For the simulated data with only seasonality, the autoregressive (AR) model and the hybrid AR-AR model performed equivalently very well. On the other hand, if the time series data employed a trend, the SARIMA model and some hybrid SARIMA models equivalently outperformed the others. In the comparison of GAMs and NNs, regarding the seasonal additive trend data, the SARIMA-GAM evenly performed well across the full range of noise variation, whereas the SARIMA-NN showed good performance only when the noise level was trivial.

  • Forecasting future drought events in a region plays a major role in water management and risk assessment of drought occurrences. The creeping characteristics of drought make it possible to mitigate drought's effects with accurate forecasting models. Drought forecasts are inevitably plagued by uncertainties, making it necessary to derive forecasts in a probabilistic framework. In this study, a new probabilistic scheme is proposed to forecast droughts, in which a discrete-time finite state-space hidden Markov model (HMM) is used aggregated with the Representative Concentration Pathway 8.5 (RCP) precipitation projection (HMM-RCP). The 3-month standardized precipitation index (SPI) is employed to assess the drought severity over the selected five stations in South Kore. A reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm is used for inference on the model parameters which includes several hidden states and the state specific parameters. We perform an RCP precipitation projection transformed SPI (RCP-SPI) weight-corrected post-processing for the HMM-based drought forecasting to derive a probabilistic forecast that considers uncertainties. Results showed that the HMM-RCP forecast mean values, as measured by forecasting skill scores, are much more accurate than those from conventional models and a climatology reference model at various lead times over the study sites. In addition, the probabilistic forecast verification technique, which includes the ranked probability skill score and the relative operating characteristic, is performed on the proposed model to check the performance. It is found that the HMM-RCP provides a probabilistic forecast with satisfactory evaluation for different drought severity categories, even with a long lead time. The overall results indicate that the proposed HMM-RCP shows a powerful skill for probabilistic drought forecasting.

  • Business forecasting is vital to the success of business. There has been an increasing demand for building business forecasting software system to assist human being to do forecasting. However, the uncertain and complex nature makes is a challenging work to analyze, design and implement software solutions for business forecasting. Traditional forecasting systems in which their models are trained based on small collection of historical data could not meet such challenges at the information explosion over the Internet. This paper presents an agent oriented business forecasting approach for building intelligent business forecasting software systems with high reusability. Although agents have been applied successfully to many application domains. little work has been reported to use the emerging agent oriented technology of this paper is that it explores how agent can be used to help human to manage various business forecasting processes in the whole business forecasting life cycle.
