  • Purpose: This study investigated the relationship between smartphone addiction propensities and compare muscle activity of the forearms and brain wave depend on the type of smartphone when inputting text messages. Method: We used an EMG to measure the change in muscle activity by attaching pads to the four muscles in both forearms of all 16 participants. We simultaneously conducted EEG measurements by observing the changes in alpha and beta waves recorded from electrode attached to both ears and the forehead of the participants. The participants had to input a given text using three different types of smartphones for ten minutes each. Result: The comparison of the EMG when inputting text involved a one way analysis of variance and the results showed that the iPad3 was highest for muscle activity followed by GALAXY Note2 and iPhone4. For EEG measurement, a one way analysis of variance was also used and the results showed iPhone4 was higest followed by GALAXY Note2 and finally iPad3 for EEG stress score. Conclusion: The results are thought to be used as reference data for smart phone users.

  • The bioelectrical impedance (BI) at the inner forearms was measured using bioelectrical impedance measurement system (BIMS), which employs the multi-frequency and the two-electrode method. Experiments were performed as follows. First, while applying a constant alternating current of 800A to the inner region of the forearms, BI (Z) was measured at nineteen frequencies ranging from 5 to 500 kHz. The prediction marker (PM) was calculated for right and left forearm. The resistance (R) and the reactance (Xc) were simultaneously measured during impedance measurement. Second, a Cole-Cole plot (relationship between reactance and resistance) was obtained for left and right forearm, indicating the different characteristic frequencies (fc). Third, the phase angle was obtained, indicating strong dependence on the applied frequency.

  • Green tobacco sickness (GTS) is an illness associated with nicotine exposures among tobacco harvesters. The purposes of this study were to measure the concentration of nicotine residues on the hands and forearms of tobacco harvesters, and to compare the concentrations according to the harvesting task. Wipe samples from the both hands and forearms were obtained from 16 workers at three sampling times (before work, in the morning after harvesting leaves, and in the afternoon after binding leaves). The geometric means of the right and left hand nicotine levels in harvesting work were 0.70 and $0.61\;{\mu}g/cm^2$, respectively, which were substantial, if significantly lower than the corresponding levels in binding work of 5.19 and $1.50\;{\mu}g/cm^2$ (p=0.016). The overall combined nicotine levels for the hands (i.e., left and right) were significantly higher than those for the forearms (p=0.013). The results of this study therefore indicate that, for GTS prevention, waterproof gloves should be worn while harvesting.

  • This study aimed to measure the grip strength of the dominant and non dominant hands of right-handed normal adults in the supination, pronation, and neutral positions of the forearms. The subjects of this study were instructed to make the standard posture suggested by the American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT) in order to minimize the impact of changes in the posture of the body as follows. The grips strength was statistically different between groups (p<.05). In the follow up test using Scheffe test, the grips in the neutral position and supinator position did not show any difference, while the grip in the pronation was smaller than those of the above two other positions. The grips of the mainly used forearm and non-mainly used forearm of the study target did not show any statistically significant difference in the neutral, supinator and pronation positions of the forearm. This study is expected to provide basic information for studying the impact of the positions of the forearms on grip strength, assessing the prehensility of patients in clinical settings, and setting therapeutic goals.

  • Robot arms are being increasingly used in various fields with special attention given to unmanned systems. In this research, we developed a high payload dual-arm robot, in which the forearm module is replaceable to meet the assigned task, such as object handling or lifting humans in a rescue operation. With each forearm module specialized for an assigned task (e.g. safety for rescue and redundant joints for object handling task), the robot can conduct various tasks more effectively than could be done previously. In this paper, the design of the high payload dual-arm robot with replaceable forearm function is described in detail. Two forearms are developed here. Each of forearm has quite a different goal. One of the forearms is specialized for human rescue in human familiar flat aspect and compliance parts. Other is for general heavy objects, more than 30 kg, handling with high degree of freedom more than 7.

  • Objectives: Skin exposure to diisocyanates may be an important risk factor for respiratory sensitization to leading asthma. However little is known about the extent of worker's diisocyanates skin exposure and the effectiveness of personal protective equipments in polyurethane foam manufacturing companies. This study provides data on diisocyanates skin exposure, surface diisiocyantes contamination of foams and the effectiveness of personal protective gloves in five polyurethane foam manufacturing companies. Materials and methods Colorimetric SWYPE pads are used for the determination of diisocyanates on surfaces of workers skin and polyurethanes foams. Results: The forearms, necks and faces of workers in polyurethane foam manufacturing companies were found to be contaminated with diisocyanates. Heavy contamination with uncured diisocyanates at large block foams surfaces were found. Personal gloves of workers for skin protection showed significant penetrations by diisocyanates. Conclusions: We found that all workers in polyurethane foam manufacturing companies could be exposed to diisocyanates by skin exposure. Also further researches which would better quantify skin exposure are needed.

  • The purpose of this study was to measure partial heat resistance of Hanbok when it worn. Since Hanbok varies from season to season, four different set of Hanboks (R, SN, p and S) were tested. Also Durumagi (D) which is worn over Hanbok (5) to keep warm from winter cold was tested as well. The thermal manikin was used in this experiment. The room temperature, air velocity and the relative humidity was set at $20\pm0.5^{\circ}C$, 0.15 m/sec and $50\pm$5% respectively. The mean skin temperature of the manikin was set at $33\pm0.5^{\circ}C$. The results were as follows: 1. The order from the least total heat resistance to the most was SN, R, p, 5 and D. 2. Upper arms had the highest heat resistance among the 13 parts. The next was abdomen thighs, buttock, legs, forearms and chest, back, and head, the order from the most to the least.

  • This paper proposes a method to simultaneously estimate two degrees of freedom in wrist forces (extension - flexion, adduction - abduction) and one degree of freedom in grasping forces using Electromyography (EMG) signals of the forearms. To correlate the EMG signals with the forces, we applied a multi - layer perceptron(MLP), which is a machine learning method, and used the characteristics of the muscles constituting the forearm to generate learning data. Through the experiments, the similarity between the MLP target value and the estimated value was investigated by applying the coefficient of determination ($R^2$) and root mean square error (RMSE) to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. As a result, the $R^2$ values with respect to the wrist flexion-extension, adduction - abduction and grasping forces were 0.79, 0.73 and 0.78 and RMSE were 0.12, 0.17, 0.13 respectively.

  • This study was carried on to investigate the effect of physiological significance of hand and foot on thermoregulation and thermal pleasantness in clothed $\mu$ Oral and skin temperatures after immersing hands and feet in the cold or the warm water at Ta of 25 and $20^{\circ}C$, respectively, were compared with four types of garment worn by two healthy male subjects. Four types of gannent expressed as A, B, C, D, were determined by the exposed areas of extremities : hands only are exposed in A, feet only are exposed in B, both hands and forearms are exposed in C, and both feet and legs are exposed in D. Major findings observed reveals that oral temperatures in D were generally maintained higher than those in A, B, and C. This is probably because the size of exposed areas rather than skin temperatures seem to determine the level of core temperature. Also, obtained result that thermal sensations felt by the subjects in foot are more closely related to local skin temperatures when they are compared to those in hand. From these findings it would be suggested that the significance of hand and foot in temperature regulation appears to be connected more with behavioral than with physiological.
