Study was conducted to determine and assess the effect of different type of denture adhesives on the incisal bite force of complete denture wearers until the dislodgement of upper denture, using pressure transducer. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 30 patients out of 100 were included in the study. Based on the Kapur's method of scoring denture retention and stability, these patients were divided into 3 groups-Group A - Clinically good dentures; Group B - Clinically fair dentures; and Group C - Clinically poor dentures. A custom made occlusal force meter was constructed based on the load cell type of pressure transducers. Different adhesives (powder, paste and adhesive strips) were used in the study. Complete denture wearers were asked to bite on the load cell and the readings of incisal bite force were recorded. The readings of incisal bite force were subjected to statistical analysis using Repeated measures ANOVA followed by post-hoc bonferroni test. RESULTS. The result suggests that denture adhesives improved the incisal bite force of complete denture wearers significantly The incisal bite force (in kg) in Group A without using adhesives, with powder adhesive, with paste adhesive and with adhesive strips was found to be 2.48 (${\pm}0.16$), 3.43 (${\pm}0.11$), 6.01 (${\pm}0.11$), 3.22 (${\pm}0.09$) respectively. The incisal bite force (in kg) in Group B without using adhesives, with powder adhesive, with paste adhesive and with adhesive strips was found to be 1.87 (${\pm}0.18$), 3.35 (${\pm}0.14$), 5.34 (${\pm}0.18$), 3.21 (${\pm}0.12$) respectively. The incisal bite force (in kg) in Group C without using adhesives, with powder adhesive, with paste adhesive and with adhesive strips was found to be 1.00 (${\pm}0.17$), 3.07 (${\pm}0.14$), 4.37 (${\pm}0.26$), 2.99 (${\pm}0.14$) respectively. CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of the study, it was concluded that the use of denture adhesive was found to be significantly effective in improving the incisal bite force of complete dentures until the dislodgement of upper denture. Fittydent paste adhesive was found to be more effective than the powder and strips adhesives. The improvement in incisal bite force was found to be higher in Group C in comparison to that of Group A and Group B.

This study investigates tsunami force acting on a group of onshore structures numerically by using three-dimensional one-field model for immiscible multi-phase flows, which is based on Navier-Stokes solver. In particular, we studied on the characteristics of tsunami with respect to the arrangement of onshore structures and the distance from seawall trough numerical experiments. For validation of the numerical method used in this study to calculate tsunami force, numerical results for tsunami force on the structures in coastal area are compared with available experimental data. Furthermore, a detail study on the efficiency of the numerical method is performed for the estimation of tsunami force based on the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic methods in which the numerical results are used. The obtained results are compared to the previous experimental one and design criteria. Considering both experimental results and numerical analysis results, semi-empirical formula by regression analysis is proposed. As a result, it was confirmed that the numerical analysis is effective to estimate on tsunami force acting on onshore structures.

This paper presents a methodology for the determination of optimal managing criteria for cable tension force in cable-stayed bridges using acceleration data acquired by monitoring system. There are many long span bridges installed with monitoring system in Korea. The monitoring systems are installed to diagnose abnormal behavior or damages in bridges and to warn these to bridge management agency. In cable-stayed bridges, the cable tension force could be an important indicator of abnormal behavior because of the geometric configuration of the cable-stayed bridge. If the management value of cable tension force is set too high or too low, then the monitoring system could not warn properly for the abnormal behavior of a bridge. Generally, the management value is set by empirical or engineering judgment, but in this paper, a new methodology for the determination of managing criteria for cable tension force is proposed based on the probability distribution model for tension force and reliability analysis. The proposed methodology is applied to a real concrete cable-stayed bridge in order to investigate its applicability.
A MOM-based algorithm (MOMA) has been developed for moving force identification from dynamic responses of bridge in the companion paper. This paper further evaluates and investigates the properties of the developed MOMA by experiment in laboratory. A simply supported bridge model and a few vehicle models were designed and constructed in laboratory. A series of experiments have then been conducted for moving force identification. The bending moment and acceleration responses at several measurement stations of the bridge model are simultaneously measured when the model vehicle moves across the bridge deck at different speeds. In order to compare with the existing time domain method (TDM), the best method for moving force identification to date, a carefully comparative study scheme was planned and conducted, which includes considering the effect of a few main parameters, such as basis function terms, mode number involved in the identification calculation, measurement stations, executive CPU time, Nyquist fraction of digital filter, and two different solutions to the ill-posed system equation of moving force identification. It was observed that the MOMA has many good properties same as the TDM, but its CPU execution time is just less than one tenth of the TDM, which indicates an achievement in which the MOMA can be used directly for real-time analysis of moving force identification in field.

We conducted a phased electromagnetic forming process analysis (EFPA) over time through a coupling of electromagnetic analysis and structural analysis. The analysis is conducted through a direct linkage between electromagnetic analysis and structural analysis. The analysis process is repeated until the electric current is completely discharged by a formed coil. We calculate the forming force that affects the workpiece using MAXWELL, a commercial electromagnetic finite element analysis program. Then, we simulate plastic behavior by using the calculated forming force data as the forming force input to ANSYS, a commercial structure finite element analysis program. We calculate the forming force data by using the model shape in MAXWELL, a commercial electromagnetic finite element analysis program. We repeat the process until the current is fully discharged by the formed coil. Our results can be used to reduce the error in data transformation with a reduced number of data transformations, because the proposed approach directly links the electromagnetic analysis and the structural analysis after removing the step of the numerical analysis of a graph describing the forming force, unlike the existing electromagnetic forming process. Second, it is possible to simulate a more realistic forming force by keeping a certain distance between nodes using the re-mesh function during the repeated analysis until the current is completely discharged by the formed coil, based on the MAXWELL results. We compare and review the results of the EFPA using the peak value of the forming force that acts on the workpiece (which is the existing analysis method), and the proposed phased EFPA over time approach.
The appearance of 3D-Touch interface provided the basis of a new interaction method between the users and the mob ile interface. However, only a few smartphones provide 3D-Touch features, and most of the 2D-Touch devices does not provide any means of applying the 3D-Touch interactions. This results in different user experiences between the two interaction methods. Thus, this research proposes the Virtual Force Touch method, which allows the users to utilize the 3D-Touch Interface on 2D-Touch based smart devices. This paper propose the suitable virtual force touch mechanism that is possible to realize users' inputs by calculating and analysis the force touch area of users' finger. This proposal is designed on customized smartphone device which has 2D-Touch sensors.

Ceramic tool has to equip with not only high toughness and strength but also low thermal expansion and good thermal conductivity which leads to the high thermal shock resistance. These characteristics make it have longer tool life under thermal stress condition. In this study, commercial Si$_3$N$_4$ceramic cutting tool and home-made SiC based ceramic cutting tools which have different sintering time and chemical composition are tested under various cutting speed and the feed rate increase, the cutting force and the flank wear growth ratio increase, too. The performance of home-made SiC based ceramic cutting tool shows the possibility to be a new ceramic tool.
In this study, the feasibility of vibration-based damage alarming algorithms are numerically evaluated for wind turbine tower structures which are subjected to harmonic force excitation. Firstly, the algorithm of vibration-based damage alarming for the wind turbine tower (WTT) is visited. The natural frequency change, modal assurance criterion (MAC) and frequency-response-ratio assurance criterion (FRRAC) are utilized to recognize changes in dynamic characteristics due to a structural damage. Secondly, a finite element model based on a real wind turbine tower is established in a structural analysis program, Midas FEA. The harmonic force is applied at the rotor level as presence of excitation. Several structural damage scenarios are numerically simulated in segmental joints of the wind turbine model. Finally, the natural frequency change, MAC and FRRAC algorithm are employed to identify the structural damage occurred in the finite element model. The results show that these criteria could be used as promising damage existence indicators for the damage alarming in wind turbine supporting structures.

In droplet microfluidics, precise droplet manipulation is required in numerous applications. This study presents ultrasonic surface acoustic wave (USAW)-based microfluidic device for label-free droplet separation based on size. The proposed device is composed of a slanted-finger interdigital transducer on a piezoelectric substrate and a polydimethylsiloxane microchannel placed on the substrate. The microchannel is aligned in the cross-type configuration where the USAWs propagate in a perpendicular direction to the flow in the microchannel. When droplets are exposed to an acoustic field, they experience the USAW-induced acoustic radiation force (ARF), whose magnitude varies depending on the droplet size. We modeled the USAW-induced ARF based on ray acoustics and conducted a series of experiments to separate different-sized droplets. We found that the experimental results were in good agreement with the theoretical estimation. We believe that the proposed method will serve as a promising tool for size-based droplet separation in a label-free manner.

This paper describes an attempt to develop a new truss model for reinforced concrete beams failing in shear based on a rational behavioral model. The key idea incorporated with truss model is the internal force state factor which is able to express global state of internal force flow in cracked reinforced concrete beams subjected to shear and bending. A new truss model using internal force state factor may provide a comprehensive result of shear strength in reinforced concrete beams without web reinforcement.
