  • The coastline of the Choa Phraya Rivermouth in the Upper Gulf of Thailand has been changed drastically. The western side especially at Ban Laem Sing was eroded for 400 meter in 26 years or with the rate of 15 meter per year on the average. The Metropolitan Electricity Authority has granted five years research project to us to study the efficiency of the electric pole fence as a mean to reduce the wave force and increase sedimentation rate inside for mangrove replantation. If the method works efficiently, it will be used to reclaim the coastal land loss in other areas in Thailand. The project was done since 2005 after the fence was constructed completely in October 2005. The oceanographic surveys were conducted before and after the construction in northeast monsoon season to study the impact of physical oceanographic forces on the coastline change. The sedimentation rates were measured each month. It is rather low about 2 cm/month. The subsiding rate from the load of deltaic sediment and groundwater withdraw using boring data is about 30 mm/year. The cumulative sinking rate is 55.8 cm from 1978 to 1995. We have tried to design the method of mangrove plantation in this area. The remote sensing data such as LANDSAT and aerial photos from 1987 to 2002 for 15 years were used to compute the rate of coastline change at each 50 m section along the western side of the rivermouth.

  • 8mol%-yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ) thin films as oxygen ion conductor were deposited by rf-magnetron sputtering, and the oxygen gas sensors with the structure of $SiO_2$ substrate/Ni-NiO mixed reference layer/Pt/YSZ/Pt were fabricated and their oxygen sensing properties were investigated. The steady-state electro-motive force (EMF) values were measured as a function of oxygen partial pressure ($PO_2;form 1.013\times10^3 \textrm{Pa \;to}\; 1.013\times10^5$Pa) and operating temperature ($300^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$). The fabricated YSZ oxygen sensor showed the best oxygen sensing properties at 50$0^{\circ}C$. However, oxygen sensing properties were very low at the temperature lower than 30$0^{\circ}C$ due to the lack of oxygen ion mobility and at the temperature higher than $700^{\circ}C$ due 새 intermixing of materials between the layers. Especially, the YSZ sensor operating at $500^{\circ}C$ and oxygen partial pressure above $1.565\times10^4$Pa showed the oxygen sensing properties close to the values predicted by ideal Nernst equation.

  • This paper introduces a magnetic hysteresis monitoring result to apply an EM sensing technique for estimating tensile force of PSC girder to various class of PS tendon. The tensile force of PS tendon is a very important factor in the performance evaluation of PSC bridges. However, in this time, the tensile force was just measured only during construction and it does not monitored after construction. To measure the tensile force of PS tendons, the EM sensing based NDT method was developed but the proposed method cannot be applied to various class of PS tendons. Thus this study performed the magnetic hysteresis measurement according to the tensile force for class B, C and D PS tendons through experimental study. The specific tensile forces(50, 100, 150, 180kN) were induced to the each specimens and the magnetic hysteresis curve was measured at each point. The permeability of specimens were gradually decreased according to increase of tensile force. Especially, the slopes of permeability variation of class B and C were similar while that of class D was different.

  • In order to produce a convenient robot for the aged and the lower limb disabled, it is needed for the research detecting implicit walking intention and controlling robot by a user's intention. In this study, we developed sensor module system to control the walking- assist robot using FSR sensor and tilt sensor, and analyzed the signals being acquired from two sensors. The sensor module system consisted of the assist device control unit, communication unit by wire/wireless, information collection unit, information operation unit, and information processing PC which handles integrated processing of assist device control. The FSR sensors attached user's the palm and the soles of foot are sensing force/pressure signals from these areas and are used for detecting the walking intention and states. The tilt sensor acquires roll and pitch signal from area of vertebrae lumbales and reflects the pose of the upper limb. We could recognize the more detailed user's walking intention such as 'start walking', 'start of right or left foot forward', and 'stop walking' by the combination of FSR and tilt signals can recognize.

  • The column type is used as the sensing element of the load cell to measure the large force in the range of 10$^4$~ 10$^{7}$ N. However. it is not easy to handle the load with large capacity due to its size. It is, therefore, necessary to design a compact load cell with a low aspect ratio. Thus this paper showed the characteristic evaluation of compact load cell with respect to the shape of supporting plate. The supporting plate of the load cell was an annular type with inner(D$_{i}$) and outer(D$_{o}$) diameters. Using the strain distribution obtained from FEM. the supporting plate was designed to get the stable output voltage of the load cell. The three designed supporting plates were manufactured, and the result of characteristic experiment of the load cell, using the 10 MN hydraulic force standard machine, was compared with FEM.M.M.

  • This paper presents a small loading and positioning device using VCM (voice coil motor). The developed device consists of a VCM-based linear actuating system, a capacitance displacement sensor and a cantilever deflection sensing system. The trust force of the VCM proportional to applied current moves the column supported on two pairs of parallel leaf springs. The infinitesimal displacement of moved column is detected by capacitance displacement sensor with a resolution of 0.1nm and a repeatability of 1nm. Also, a micro cantilever with known stiffness (200N/m), which is mounted on the end of the column, is used as a force sensor to detect the load applied to a specimen. After the cantilever contacts with the specimen, the deflection of cantilever and the load applied to the specimen are measured by using an optical lever system which consists of a diode laser, a mirror and a PSD (position sensitive detector). In this paper, an experimental system was constructed and its actuator and sensing parts were tested and calibrated. Also, the constructed system was applied to the indentation experiment and the load-displacement curve of aluminum was obtained. Experimental results showed that the developed device can be applied for performing nano indentation.

  • This paper describes the algorithm development of a new body pressure detection sensor for occupant classification system. U.S. Government has required that advanced airbag system should be installed to every automobiles after 2006 according to FMVSS 208 regulation. Therefore, Occupant Classification System should be provided the passenger with safety in order to protect the infants or children that sit in the front passenger seat. When an occupant sits on the chair of the vehicle, deployment of the airbag depends on passenger's weigh distribution and postures. Authors have been developed a new pattern recognition of passenger and weight distribution at the same time by Force Sensing Resistor for the safety.

  • This paper proposes and demonstrates novel flexible contact force sensing devices for 3-dimensional force measurement. To realize the sensor, polyimide and polydimethylsiloxane are used as a substrate, which makes it flexible. Thin-film metal strain gauges, which are incorporated into the polymer, are used for measuring the three-dimensional contact forces. The force sensor characteristics are evaluated against normal and shear load. The fabricated force sensor can measure normal loads up to 4N. The sensor output signals are saturated against load over 4N. Shear loads can be detected by different voltage drops in strain gauges. The device has no fragile structures; therefore, it can be used as a ground reaction force sensor for balance control in humanoid robots. Four force sensors are assembled and placed in the four corners of the robot's sole. By increasing bump dimensions, the force sensor can measure load up to 20N. When loads are exerted on the sole, the ground reaction force can be measured by these four sensors. The measured forces can be used in the balance control of biped locomotion system.

  • Analysis of brake characteristics has progressed rapidly in recent years, as computer techniques have developed. However, there are many problems in predicting braking characteristics, due to the numerous design variables of the brake system. Therefore, a synthetic braking performance analysis is required for all brake system parts such as master cylinder, booster, control valve and split system. In this paper, a program which can analyze braking performance such as force distribution, braking efficiency, pedal force and pedal travel, is presented. The preprocessor of the program helps users prepare input files through a dialog box. An additional postprocessor makes the graph presentation of solved results. Also, a simple example problem is applied to show the usefulness of the presented program.

  • Flow induced shape change is important for spatial interpretation of vascular response and for understanding of mechanotransduction in a single cell. We investigated the possible shapes of endothelial cell (EC) in a mathematical model and compared these with experimental results. The linearized analytic solution from the sinusoidal wavy wall and Stokes flow was applied with the constraint of EC volume. The three dimensional structure of the human umbilical vein endothelial cell was visualized in static culture or after various durations of shear stress (20 $dyne/cm^2$ for 5, 10, 20, 40, 60, 120min). The shape ratio (width: length: height) of model agreed with that of the experimental result, which represented the drag force minimizing shape of stream-lining. EC would be streamlined in order to accommodate to the shear flow environmented by active reconstruction of cytoskeletons and membranes through a drag force the sensing mechanism.
