  • Objectives: The aims of this study were to quantify tug-back by measuring the pulling force and investigate the correlation of clinical tug-back pulling force with in vitro gutta-percha (GP) cone adaptation score using micro-computed tomography (${\mu}CT$). Materials and Methods: Twenty-eight roots from human single-rooted teeth were divided into 2 groups. In the ProTaper Next (PTN) group, root canals were prepared with PTN, and in the ProFile (PF) group, root canals were prepared using PF (n = 14). The degree of tug-back was scored after selecting taper-matched GP cones. A novel method using a spring balance was designed to quantify the tug-back by measuring the pulling force. The correlation between tug-back scores, pulling force, and percentage of the gutta-percha occupied area (pGPOA) within apical 3 mm was investigated using ${\mu}CT$. The data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation analysis, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test. Results: Specimens with a strong tug-back had a mean pulling force of 1.24 N (range, 0.15-1.70 N). This study showed a positive correlation between tug-back score, pulling force, and pGPOA. However, there was no significant difference in these factors between the PTN and PF groups. Regardless of the groups, pGPOA and pulling force were significantly higher in the specimens with a higher tug-back score (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The degree of subjective tug-back was a definitive determinant for master cone adaptation in the root canal. The use of the tug-back scoring system and pulling force allows the interpretation of subjective tug-back in a more objective and quantitative manner.

  • Few studies on the biomechanical analysis of hand postures and tool handling tasks exist because of the lack of appropriate measurement techniques for hand force. A measurement system for the finger forces and joint angles for the analysis of manual tool handling tasks was developed in this study. The measurement system consists of a force sensing glove made from twelve Force Sensitive Resistors and an angle-measuring glove (Cyberglove$^{TM}$, Virtual technologies) with eighteem joint angle sensors. A biomechanical model of the hand using the data from the measurement system was also developed. Systems of computerized procedures were implemented inte- grating the hand posture measurement system, biomechanical analysis system, and the task analysis system for manual tool handling tasks. The measurement system was useful in providing the hand force data needed for an existing task analysis system used in CTD risk evaluation. It is expected that the hand posture measurement developed in this study will provide an efficient and cost-effective solution to task analysis of manual tool handling tasks.s.

  • Driver fatigue is a major cause of fatal road accidents and has significant implications in road safety. In recent years, researchers have investigated steering wheel grip force as an alternative method to detect driver fatigue noninvasively and in real time. In this study, a fatigue detection system was developed by monitoring the grip force and changes in the grip force were measured while participants' engaged in an interactive simulated driving task. The study also measured the participants' subjective sleepiness to ensure the validity of measuring grip force. The results indicated that while participants engaged in a driving task, steering wheel grip force decreased and subjective sleepiness increased concurrently over time. The possible applications of the driver fatigue detection system by steering wheel grip force and future guidelines are discussed.

  • Most studies of elsatohydrodynamic lubrication are oriented only to the measurement of film thickness itself with optical interferometer. In order to exactly investigate the characteristics of a certain lubricant under the condition of additives. especially for traction performance. it is also important to get the information of traction force as well. In this work. we developed the device for measuring friction force of EHL contact condition, which can trace the film thickness over the contact area with optical interferometer. To verify the validity of the measuring system, the friction force and film thickness under EHL condition are measured with the variation of additive ratios of viscosity Index improvers.

  • The facility equipments generate dynamic force on building floor and the force can be measured with force transducer. However, this method depends on the measuring capacity or range of sensor, or mounts installation condition of equipments. Because of this restricting condition on force measuring system, this paper suggests a indirect method, the TPA(transfer path analysis) method, that produces a closely approximate dynamic force of equipments. This method calculates the dynamic force by using transfer response function. Firstly, the calculated dynamic force of impact load and continuous load was respectively compared with the sensor-measured value to examine the accuracy of TPA method. After that, the dynamic force and response induced by large facility equipments - a cooling tower, AHU and a large ventilator - were calculated by TPA method and the validity of these value were examined.

  • Recent noticeable advances of CNC machine tools have considerably improved productivity and precision in manufacturing processes. However, in the respect of productivity some defects still remain because selection of machining conditions entirely depends on the experiences of programmers. Usually, machining conditions such as feed rate and spindle speed have been selected conservatively by considering the worst cases, and it has brought the loss of machining efficiency. Thus, the improvement of cutting force controller has been done to regulate cutting force constantly and to maximize feedrate simultaneously in case that machining conditions change variously. In this study, sliding mode control with boundary layer is applied to milling process for cutting force regulation and in a commercial CNC machining center data transfer between PC and PMC (programmable machine controller) of CNC machine is done using a standard interface method. And in the cutting force measurement, an indirect cutting force measuring system using current signal of AC servo is adopted in order not to use high-priced equipment like tool dynamometer. The purpose of this study is to maximize the productivity in milling process, thus its results can be applied to cases such as rough cutting process.

  • The hand coordinate systems for measuring vibration exposures and biodynamic responses have been standardized, but they are not actually used in many studies. This contradicts the purpose of the standardization. The objectives of this study were to identify the major sources of this problem, and to help define or identify better coordinate systems for the standardization. This study systematically reviewed the principles and definition methods, and evaluated typical hand coordinate systems. This study confirms that, as accelerometers remain the major technology for vibration measurement, it is reasonable to standardize two types of coordinate systems: a tool-based basicentric (BC) system and an anatomically based biodynamic (BD) system. However, these coordinate systems are not well defined in the current standard. Definition of the standard BC system is confusing, and it can be interpreted differently; as a result, it has been inconsistently applied in various standards and studies. The standard hand BD system is defined using the orientation of the third metacarpal bone. It is neither convenient nor defined based on important biological or biodynamic features. This explains why it is rarely used in practice. To resolve these inconsistencies and deficiencies, we proposed a revised method for defining the realistic handle BC system and an alternative method for defining the hand BD system. A fingertip-based BD system for measuring the principal grip force is also proposed based on an important feature of the grip force confirmed in this study.
