  • In the field of food and drug, the role of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety is becoming more important for national and public safety as well as national development and improvement of public welfare. Food and drug statistics are being used to determine the priorities and directions of policy for the promotion of public health and the development of the health industry. This study focuses on statistics from the MFDS. Through the analysis of the MFDS's statistics, the current status of the MFDS's production statistics was identified, and the survey of utilization and satisfaction of the MFDS's statistics was conducted on food and drug experts who actually use the statistics of the MFDS. In order to identify problems of the MFDS statistics, environmental factors affecting the MFDS statistics were derived, and the priorities of improvement tasks for its statistics were identified using AHP and IPA. In addition, the current situation of the statistical system, which serve as the basic coordinate for the establishment and execution of domestic food and drug policies, was identified and implications were provided.

  • In the past, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) conducted research into and production of agricultural statistics. As a result of organizational changes, these responsibilities were transferred to Statistics Korea in 1998 and 2008. So, the MAFRA managed data without a formal system for managing data and statistical information. The demand for a foundation to improve the usefulness of agri-food statistics has recently increased due to the necessity for basic data representing the realities of rural and agricultural areas. This is especially true for field-oriented agricultural administration. This study aims to propose a strategy for the systematically integrated administration of dispersed data and statistical information. It served as the foundation for the integrated management of distributed administrative and statistical data.

  • Agriculture and forest are basis for livelihood in Nepal while both sectors constitute around 40 percent of the national product and over two-thirds of the economically active population is dependent on agriculture. However, radical changes in land use, depletion in crops production and food availability are major threats due to loss of soil fertilityand severe environmental degradation. In this study, we used time series data from 1986/87 to 2005/06 about food crop production and population published by Government of Nepal, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and Central Bureau of Statistics. Descriptive statistics and ArcGIS were used to assess and map the food security status of Nepalese Terai based on the local food demand and supply system. Food supply to demand ratio(FSDR) was the main idea of assessment. Our results showed that out of 20 districts, only 8 districts were categorised under secured food districts whereas 5 districts were still under food unsecured situation. The analysis further revealed that 7 districts had faced food deficit more than 8-16 times during the last 20 year periods. Data further showed that there was surplus food supply relative to the requirements dictated by FSDR. However, the average FSDR was less than 1.2(less than 20% surplus) exploring fact that most of the districts were not producing sufficient food to cope up the food shock and after 1995 it was relatively stagnant. Our prediction reveals that food supply in Terai even in the future would remain at almost the same level as now, and there will not more than 16-17% surplus by 2021 considering medium vibrant population growth. The findings thus, indicate that Terai may not be a food secure region in the future, even though the region is considered as a food storage house of Nepal. In addition, this paper suggests ways to make future comprehensive case studies more widely comparable in Terai, Nepal.

  • Background: Thyroid cancer (TC) is a more common endocrine malignancy in females and is a major cause of death in developing countries. Therefore the aim of this study was to explore possible risk factors of thyroid cancer in females of Pakistan. Materials and Methods: This study covered 232 females, including 127 (54.7%) cases and 105 (45.2%) controls, from the INMOL Hospital and Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Lahore. Different risk factors were explored by the descriptive and inferentially statistics. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for different risk factors were computed using logistic regression. Results: The results showed six risk factors, marital status, family history of thyroid cancer, iodine in the diet, oxidative stress, fast food and fried food, to demonstrate positive significant links to thyroid cancer (odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of :2.152, 1.104-4.198; 2.630, 1.416-4.887; 2.391, 1.282-4.458; 4.115, 2.185-7.750; 3.656, 1.851-7.223; 2.357, 1.268-4.382; and 2.360, 1.199-4.643, respectively). Conclusions: The Oxidative stress, marital status, family history of cancer, fast food, use of iodine diet and fried food are the risk factors of thyroid cancer in females.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the current status relating to food packaging and design for status of small and medium food enterprises. A company survey was conducted from June to October, 2015 and targeted 1300 small and medium domestic food enterprises. Finally, a total of 1300 (recovery rate 100%) useable data were selected. Statistical analyses were performed on the data utilizing the SPSS PASW Statistics 18.0 for Windows, such as descriptive statistics and frequency analysis. According to the results, awareness and importance of food labeling were high, but performance of English inscription of product name was relatively low. The most important reason for food labeling was 'providing correct information on food' 910 (72.8%). Accordingly, a system which can provide the latest information by continuously monitoring mandatory disclosure requirements for types of foods in individual countries is needed.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the motives for food choice using a Food Choice Questionnaire (FCQ). A FCQ, an instrument that measures the reported importance of nine factors underlying food choice, was administered to a representative sample of 157 adult respondents from 21 to 27 October 2013. Statistical analyses such as Descriptive statistics, Factor analysis, Reliability analysis, Pearson correlation, independent samples t-test, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were performed on the data using the SPSS PASW Statistics 18.0 for Windows. According to the results, five food choice motivation factors were discerned: health, sensory and mood, convenience, price, and familiarity. The most important factors reported were price, sensory and mood, convenience, health and familiarity. We found that food choice motivation is distinguished by age, frequency of eating out, and consumption of HMR. Females in this study gave higher importance scores to health, sensory and mood, and familiarity. There were higher correlations between 'health' and 'sensory appeal and mood'.

  • Under Article 19, Paragraph 1 of the Food Industry Promotion Act, Rural Development Administration renews the Korean foods composition table every five years. Before the publication of the tenth revision of the Korean foods composition table in 2021, this paper suggests methods for collecting representative samples of 182 highly consumed foods in Korea. Food markets are categorized by their distribution channels, which are supermarkets and local markets. Eight samples are collected from each category by applying the National Food and Nutrient Analysis Program (NFNAP)'s stratified multi-stage sampling. The NFNAP was implemented in 1997 as a collaborative food composition research effort between the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to secure reliable estimates for the nutrient content of food and beverages consumed by the US population. Selected supermarkets for selecting representative food samples are Emart Kayang, Homeplus Siheung, Lottemart Dongducheon, Emart Suwon, Lottemart Dunsan, Lottemart Yeosu, Emart Ulsan, and Hanaroclub Ulsan. Selected local markets also are Doksandongusijang in Geumcheon-gu and Pungnapsijang in Songpa-gu, Seoul, Ilsansijang in Ilsanseo-gu, Goyang, Unamsijang in Buk-gu, Gwangju, Beopdongsijang in Daedeok-gu, Daejeon, Bongnaesijang in Yeongdo-gu and Jwadongjaeraesijang in Haeundae-gu, Busan, and Jungangsijang in Jinhae-gu, Changwon.
