Non-timber forest products are important component of subsistence and livelihood of tribal communities living in and near forests. This is of particular significance in the state of Arunachal Pradesh having more than 80% of geographical area under forest cover and predominantly inhabited by tribal people. Purpose of this study was to document the status and utilization pattern and to assess the economic value of NTFPs of the state. Present study was carried out in eight districts of Arunachal Pradesh viz., Changlang, East Kameng, Lower Subansiri, Tawang, Tirap, Upper Siang, West Kameng and West Siang covering 34 villages and 350 households. Altogether, 135 plant based and 36 animal based non-timber forest products were recorded. Among plant based NTFPs, 54 species were collected for leaves, 30 for stem and 22 for fruits. Most of the animal based NTFPs (93%) were collected/hunted for food. Average 20~40 kg of NTFPs was collected annually per household. Maximum plant based NTFP collection was recorded from West Siang followed by West Kameng and Tawang. Similarly, highest collection of animal based NTFPs was recorded from West Siang followed by Tirap and Lower Subansiri. NTFP contributed more than 50% of annual income of the people of East Kameng, Tirap, Lower Subansiri and Upper Siang districts. An illiterate and unemployed person with minimum agricultural land was more dependent on forests for his livelihood than a literate jobholder. The study concludes that a large section of people of Arunachal Pradesh are dependent on NTFPs for their livelihood however due to its unscientific harvesting, the availability of NTFPs is receding with time. There is an urgent need to promote cultivation and scientific harvesting of NTFPs in order to conserve the plant and animal diversity of this global biodiversity hotspot and for ensuring livelihood security of the people living in this area.
The purpose of this study is to observe the relationship between smoking and control factors to blood pressure, such as sodium and potassium levels of dietary intake and serum in 67 rural university male students(smoker: 35 persons, non smoker: 32 persons). 3-day dietary record and blood sampling were conducted for measurements of the levels of dietary intake and serum. The results were as follows: 1) There are no significance between smokers and non-smokers in height, weight, and BMI. 2) Mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure of smokers and non-smokers were $131.33\pm93.75mmHg, \;119.37\pm80.62mmHg, $ respectively. Blood pressure of smoker was higher than that of non-smokers(p<0.05). 3) There was no significant difference between smoker and non smoker in dietary potassium intake but dietary sodium intake and Na/K ratio of smoker were higher than those of non-smokers(p<0.05, p<0.05). And significant correlation was found between dietary sodium intake and blood pressure of smokers(p<0.05). 4) Smokers of optimum gustation of salt(0.52%) was higher than that of non-smokers(0.49%). Even though blood pressure of smokers was not critical level, if they smoke continuosely until middle age, their blood pressure will be increased by smoking. The results of this study suggest that no smoking education program for smokers including the information about desirable food habits for prevention of hypertension should be developed.
The importance of the standards and its related texts established by Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) had been increased by the Agreement of Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS Agreement) in World Trade Organization (WTO). To meet the needs of WTO SPS Agreement, biennial CAC meeting had been changed to every year. This study was conducted to analyze the effects on interval between CAC meetings. The years of adoption, revision and amendment of CAC texts were collected from the official standard list and individual texts from CAC homepage. The period since establishment of CAC was divided into four groups by starting negotiation of Uruguay Round, WTO foundation and reducing the interval between CAC meetings. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS program. The numbers of CAC standards, guidelines, recommendations, maximum residue levels, and miscellaneous texts were 202, 56, 46, 3 and 5, respectively. Since 8 documents didn't contain the adoption year, these texts were eliminated to analyze adoption year. For adoption, annually 11.26 texts were established since establishment of CAC and there were no significant difference among the 4 groups. However the average numbers of revisions and amendments of adopted texts for overall periods and for each period were 7.56, 0.93, 6.50, 17.20 and 19.75, respectively. The average numbers of overall decisions, defined as summation of adoption, revision and amendment of texts, for overall periods and for each period were 12.37, 6.27, 9.00, 17.40 and 29.25, respectively. There were significant differences by the WTO foundation and the interval between CAC meetings. The reduced interval of CAC meetings influenced to increase number of revisions and amendments of adopted texts, but not yet adoption of new text.
Efforts to have children consume milk continue across the world for the sufficient supply of calcium and protein. This study examines the frequency and amount of dairy milk and the recognition, acceptability, and knowledge of milk and dairy products by considering fifth- and sixth-graders in Hwaseong, Korea. The acceptability of milk and dairy products measured based on a five-point Likert-type scale was assessed to determine its correlations with breakfast frequency, the frequency of milk intake, and milk knowledge. According to descriptive statistics, 47% and 53% of the subjects were fifth- and sixth-graders, respectively, 53% and 47% were male and female, respectively, 45.3% and 51.2% had mothers in their thirties and forties, respectively, and 57% had working mothers. Breakfast frequency was 5.2 and 5.3 times per week, and milk and dairy intake was 4.6 times. The milk knowledge score was 5.3 out of 10 points. The average daily intake of milk was a cup (55.1%), and a vast majority preferred white milk (68.6%). Ice cream bar type (4.49 points) and cone type (4.48 points) showed the highest acceptability, and breakfast frequency was positively correlated with white milk and cheddar cheese (p<0.01). Daily milk intake frequency was positively correlated with white milk and fortified milk. Milk knowledge was positively correlation with white milk, fortified milk, functional yogurt (p <0.05), fermented milk, and cheese (p<0.01). The higher the breakfast frequency, the more likely the intake of white milk (p<0.01). An increase in milk intake increased milk knowledge (p<0.05). The higher the level of knowledge, the more likely the intake of fortified milk and the frequency of milk intake. These results suggest that school lunch milk may increase awareness and milk intake through continuing education in milk knowledge. High acceptability scores for white milk, fortified milk, and fermented milk indicate their suitability for school milk consumption.
This study is to find out the antioxidative effect and serum and liver lipid composition of wild grape juice in vivo. Forty 6-week-old white Sprague Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups such as normal lipid group, normal lipid group with wild grape juice, oxidized lipid (basic diet plus 10% of oxidative lipid) group and oxidized lipid group with wild grape juice, and 2ml juice was provided everyday. After 4 weeks of feeding with experimental diet each groups were examined for the antioxidant enzyme activity in blood and liver microsome and their serum and liver lipid composition. Glutanthione peroxidase activity in blood was significantly higher in oxidized lipid group with wild grape juice than in oxidized lipid group. Glutanthione peroxidase activity showed no difference depending on wild grape juice supplementation. Glutanthione peroxidase activity in liver was significantly higher in the groups with wild grape juice than in the groups supplemented only with oxidized lipid. Glutanthione reductase activity showed no difference depending on the supplementation of wild grape juice. Serum triglyceride level in the group supplemented with oxidized lipid diet and wild grape juice showed similar value to the normal lipid group and the normal lipid group with wild grape juiceoxidized fa6. Liver total lipid in the group supplemented with oxidized lipid and wild grape juice showed similar value to the normal lipid group and the group supplemented with normal lipid and wild grape juice. And it was lower than that of oxidative lipid group without juice. The liver triglyceride level in the group supplemented with normal lipid and wild grape juice was lower than that in the oxidative lipid group, but it was as low as in the group supplemented only with normal lipid.

This study was conducted to develop expanding strategies of nutrition counseling in school foodservices. The study participants were 102 school dietitians in Gyeonggi province, and information on the current status, dietitians' necessity awareness, and practical activation needs for nutrition counseling were investigated. While 78.8% of dietitians were aware that nutrition counseling was in need, it was only 31.3% who understood the necessity of nutrition counseling. The implementation rate of students' nutrition counseling was 26.2%, and 74.0% of counseling dietitians reported that they conducted nutrition counseling because it was on the inspection list by the Office of Education. Overall, dietitians did not have high consciousness of the need for nutrition counseling. The implementation rate of students' nutrition counseling was remarkably low due to the reason of excessive work and insufficient participants, and it was interpreted that dietitians had a low intrinsic motivation for nutrition counseling. So, we suggested several strategies to activate school nutrition counseling as follows. First of all, dietitians needed to increase the students' participation rate by promoting the importance of nutrition counseling to students and by assigning their available work hours for nutrition counseling. Second, in academic communities, standardized counseling manuals and media covering the important nutrition and health issues should be developed and disseminated, and education programs needed to build up dietitians' self-esteem and knowledge on nutrition counseling. Lastly, the Office of Education should have the initiative in activating nutrition counseling in school foodservices by supporting a budget and counseling dietitians who exclusively responsible part-time counseling at schools.
To make sure of the usefulness of extract of Rubus coreanus Miquel for producing functional feeding honey, we compared some antioxidative indicators of feeding honey using extract of Rubus coreanus Miquel with acacia honey, SueBee Clover honey(USA), feeding honey on the market. The water content of four honeys were 16.6~26.5%, pH were 3.18~3.70, and titratable acidity ranged 0.018~0.022%. The phenolic compound contents of SueBee Clover honey and feeding honey using extract of Rubus coreanus Miquel were 8.3 mg/100 g and 7.3 mg/100 g, respectively, and were significaltly higher thgheacacia honey and feeding honey on the market. The flavonoid contents per 100 g of honey ranged from 2.3 mg(acacia honey) to 15.0 mg(SueBee Clover honey). DPPH anion scavenging activity of four honeys were not high. 0.5~2.0 g/ml of feeding honey using extract of Rubus coreanus Miquel was 16~36% and showed a concentration-reliant figure. At the concentration of 0.25~0.75 mg/ml, the reducing power of four honeys increased concentration-dependently, and the power of 0.25 mg/ml of feeding honey using extract of Rubus coreanus Miquel was corresponding to thgt of $150{\mu}g$/ml of a vitamin C solution. ABTS radical scavenging activity of feeding honey using extract of Rubus coreanus Miquel was 43.3~68.4%; the highest activity amongst all samples. When plotting the dose-response curve, ABTS radical scavenging activity also increased as their concentration increased from 62.5 mg/ml to 500 mg/ml. The heat treatment reduced the phenolic compound contents of acacia honey and feeding honey using extract of Rubus coreanus DPPH anion scavenging activity of feeding honey on the market and feeding honey using extract of Rubus coreanus Miquel did not changed significaltly after heating for 20 min, and the three honey except SueBee Clover honey maintained the reducing power with the same treatment.
