Sibutramine is an anorectic that has been banned since 2010 due to cardiovascular safety issues. However, counterfeit drugs or slimming products that include sibutramine are still available in the market. It has been reported that illegal sibutramine-contained pharmaceutical products induce cardiovascular crisis. However, the mechanism underlying sibutramine-induced cardiovascular adverse effect has not been fully evaluated yet. In this study, we performed cardiovascular safety pharmacology studies of sibutramine systemically using by hERG channel inhibition, action potential duration, and telemetry assays. Sibutramine inhibited hERG channel current of HEK293 cells with an $IC_{50}$ of $3.92{\mu}M$ in patch clamp assay and increased the heart rate and blood pressure ($76{\Delta}bpm$ in heart rate and $51{\Delta}mmHg$ in blood pressure) in beagle dogs at a dose of 30 mg/kg (per oral), while it shortened action potential duration (at $10{\mu}M$ and $30{\mu}M$, resulted in 15% and 29% decreases in $APD_{50}$, and 9% and 17% decreases in $APD_{90}$, respectively) in the Purkinje fibers of rabbits and had no effects on the QTc interval in beagle dogs. These results suggest that sibutramine has a considerable adverse effect on the cardiovascular system and may contribute to accurate drug safety regulation.

The COVID-19 pandemic has so far given the world a great shock and fear that cannot be compared to other infectious diseases, and local economies are experiencing a serious economic crisis accordingly. This paper examines the regional characteristics of economic recession and resilience due to the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the employment fluctuations in 85 cities nationwide. Although the overall trend is in line with national employment indicators, there are some differences in the shock response and the recovery of employment in individual cities. The difference between cities is somewhat greater in the resilience of the recovery stage than the resistance, which is the shock-response stage. In terms of resilience, cities in the capital area have relatively good condition compared to cities in the non-capital area. The weak resilience of large cities such as Seoul, which has a high population density, can be explained to be the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic of infectious diseases. Regarding the economic structure of the city, the ratio of service and sales workers, wholesalers and retailers, and food and lodging businesses are analyzed as valid explanatory variables for the resilience of cities.
It is necessary to prepare a stable production base in advance for a change in the global grain market, and it is required to prepare comprehensive countermeasures such as securing technical skills and cultivation technology. Therefore, Korea, which relies on imports of major grains other than rice, could be exposed to a food crisis at any time unless the self-sufficiency rate of grains is improved. In order to respond to this new food crisis, it is necessary to find ways to efficiently utilize rice fields to increase the domestic grain self-sufficiency rate. From this point of view, interest and demand for the generalization of farmland that can be used as paddy fields and returned to paddy fields are increasing, and related research is also being continuously performed. In order to select a multipurpose farmland project site, this study extracted farmland containing 10% or more purchased and stockpiled farmland through spatial analysis (buffer, dissolve, intersect, etc.), and finally presented areas subject to multipurpose farmland projects. The target site for the multipurpose farmland project was finally selected by integrating data onto a point-by-point basis so that the current status of farmland purchased and stockpiled, Farm Manager Registration Records, and the Korean Soil Information System data (drainage classes, surface soil texture, field-suitability classification, etc.) can be used in combination. There are 175 areas where the multipurpose farmland is possible. Incheon 2, Gyeongbuk 40, Gangwon 2, Chungbuk 7, Chungnam 48, Jeonbuk 34, Jeonnam 19, Gyeongbuk 15, Gyeongnam 8. Chungcheongnam-do has the most target site for the multipurpose farmland project, and Gangwon-do is the least. It is expected to contribute to new commercialization and business expansion by deriving business areas by identifying the scale of the farmland multipurpose farmland project using Farm Manger Registration Records and spatial data.

The yearly consumption of soybean ranged from 1.5 to 1.7 million tons in Korea during 1995-1997 with an increasing trend of annual consumption by 60,000 tons. Gross consumption of soybean was 1.74 million tons in 1997: 1.292 million tons for feed, 0.433 million tons for food and its processing, and 15,000 tons for seed and other uses. Particularly, Korea totally depends upon imports of soybean for feed and oil. Only about $40{\%}$ of soybeans used for food and its processing are supplied through domestic production. Korean markets will be open to foreign agricultural products except for rice in 2004 when the Uruguay Round treaty is completed. According to the Korean Rural Economics Institutes reports, soybean consumption in 2004 is expected to be 1.87 million tons that is higher than that in 1997 by 0.13 million tons. In order to meet the need for soybean, Korean government planned to supply from 0.17 million tons of domestic production plus 1.7 million tons of imports, and also planned to raise the self-supply rate of $9.1{\%}$ in 2004 from $8.6{\%}$ in 1997. According to the USDA reports on international soybean production and consumption, its production is expected to be 150 million tons over the world and the international market prices for soybean will be unstable in 2004. Based on these reports, international soybean trade capacity will be 36 million tons in 2004 that is lower than 39 million tons (accounting for $25{\%}$ of gross production) in 1597. Also, a term-end stock in 2004 is estimated to be 9.6 million tons that is low as compared to 18.6 million tons In 1997, In coping with domestic and international soybean production, consumption and supply, and further possible food crisis, national policies and continuous efforts are necessarily required to promote domestic production and to reduce imports of soybean.

The global crisis caused by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) led to the most significant economic loss and human deaths after World War II. The pathogen causing this disease is a novel virus called the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV-2). As of December 2020, there have been 80.2 million confirmed patients, and the mortality rate is known as 2.16% globally. A strategy to protect a host from SARS-CoV-2 is by suppressing intracellular viral replication or preventing viral entry. We focused on the spike glycoprotein that is responsible for the entry of SARS-CoV-2 into the host cell. Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration/EU Medicines Agency authorized a vaccine and antibody to treat COVID-19 patients by emergency use approval in the absence of long-term clinical trials. Both commercial and academic efforts to develop preventive and therapeutic agents continue all over the world. In this review, we present a perspective on current reports about the spike glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2 as a therapeutic target.
Under the crisis of global economy, a creation of employment became an important economic issue in Korea. Recently, the structure of Korea economy has been shifted to technology intensive industry. So, Korea economy has been placed on growth without job. Food service industry to overcome this situation has begun to receive attention as a good alternative. Therefore, this study analyzed the effect of the food service industry up on the national employment in Korea using input-output table. Food service industry has a high influence on related industries that are within a food system in respect to job creation. These results show that it is important to provide support policies by government to develop a food service industry.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) crisis introduced a system for easy layoffs. With recent economic downturn, employees have been asked to retire early and less new jobs have become available. More small businesses as a result have been started. The purpose of this research is to study weight and ranking on SWOT factors of korea food service franchise industry using the SWOT analysis. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Analytic Network Process (ANP) were used to analyze the SWOT found by the surveys. First, the SWOT analysis shows that the franchise owners and the expert group view the industry positively overall and there are more strengths, opportunities than weaknesses, threats. While there are negatives and threats to the industry overall, many people think that there are more opportunities and positive aspects. Second, the franchise owners rank proven business model and platform (S3) as the strongest strength of food service franchise businesses while the expert group ranks management supports (S2) from headquarters as the strongest strength. Third, the expert group and franchise owner group indicate that the weight on unfair franchise contracts with headquarters(W3) and high penalty from breaking a franchise agreement(W4) are 60% of weaknesses. Fourth, both the expert group and franchise owner group indicate that change in people's lifestyle, value system and consumption pattern(O3) as the most important opportunity. Fifth, both groups indicate that changes in consumption pattern(T1) due to ever changing food service industry as the biggest threat. It is ranked higher than the entry of korea food service franchises.
Since the COVID-19 crisis, the use of disposable packaging materials and delivery services, which raise environmental and social issues with waste disposal, has significantly increased. Antimicrobial active packaging has emerged as a viable solution for extending the shelf-life of foods by minimizing microbial growth and decomposition. In this review article, we provide a comprehensive overview of current research trends in antimicrobial active film and coating published over the last five years. First, we introduced various polymer materials such as film and coating that are used in active packaging. Next, various types of antimicrobial (antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral) packaging including essential oil, extracts, biological material, metal, and nanoparticles were introduced and their activities and mechanisms were discussed. Finally, the current challenges and prospects were discussed. Overall, this review provides insights into the recent advancements in antimicrobial active packaging research and highlights the potential of the technology to enhance food safety and quality.
Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is the most commonly used fresh food refrigeration insulation in Korea and Europe. Moreover, as the use of disposable packaging materials has increased significantly along with non-face-to-face delivery services since the COVID-19 crisis, social issues related to waste disposal are also being raised. Therefore, in this study, the life cycle of EPS boxes for fresh food is focused on the factors that have a large difference between incineration and landfill including recycling in Europe and Korea in the disposal process after use, and raw materials and energy in the manufacturing process, which account for a large portion of the environmental impact value. We tried to compare the environmental impact of evaluation. Overall, the raw material production stage, box manufacturing stage, and packaging stage have similar processes in Europe and Korea, but unlike Europe, Korea, which lacks landfills and incineration facilities, has focused on expanding the recycling rate. It was necessary to do an environmental impact assessment. Data affecting the environment were derived based on 2019 and 2020 data for Korea and 2017 and 2020 data for Europe. In order to predict the future environmental impact assessment, assumptions about the disposal rate in 2025 and 2030 were introduced and evaluated. As a result of this study, it was found that the raw material production stage of EPS boxes, which have similar processes in both Korea and Europe, has the greatest effect on the global warming effect of Korean EPS boxes. However, Korea, which has a relatively high recycling rate in the disposal process compared to incineration and landfill, showed better environmental performance than Europe in most impact indicators except freshwater eutrophication. In particular, Korea has increased the overall recycling rate compared to Europe by replacing various recyclable materials such as building materials and sundries with XPS (extruded polystyrene) recycled materials. In conclusion, it was found that increasing the recycling rate rather than incinerating and landfilling EPS boxes for fresh food in the domestic EPS industry has relatively less environmental load compared to Europe.
Due to the depleting petroleum reserve, recurring energy crisis, and global warming, it is necessary to study the development of white biotech-based aromatic chemical feedstock from renewable biomass for replacing petroleum-based one. In particular, the production of aromatic intermediates and derivatives in biosynthetic pathway of aromatic amino acids from glucose might be replaced by the production of petrochemical-based aromatic chemical feedstock including benzene-derived aromatic compounds. In this review, I briefly described the production technology for hydroquinone, catechol, adipic acid, shikimic acid, gallic acid, pyrogallol, vanillin, p-hydroxycinnamic acid, p-hydroxystyrene, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, indigo, and indole 3-acetic acid using metabolic engineering, bioconversion, and chemical process. The problems and possible solutions regarding development of production technology for competitive white biotech-based aromatic compounds were also discussed.
