The purpose of this study was to estimate beverage consumption frequency and determine related problems of elementary school students in Chungnam. The survey was conducted with 488 students(boys=230, girls=258) using a questionnaire. The average age of the students was 10.1 years old, thir average height and weight were 145.1 cm and 39.5 kg, respectively and the obesity index was -1.3%. The frequencies for breakfast, lunch and dinner were 5.8 times/week, 6.7 times/week and 6.4 times/week, respectively. Regarding the frequency of snacks, high response rates for 'once/day'(38.3%) and 'none' (30.5%) were observed. Nutrition label on beverages were identified rarely(39.1%), nearly never(19.7%), and never(12.9%). The choice factors in selecting beverage were taste, nutrition, and price. For the type of snack most often consumed, fruit or juice was 25.8%, snack items were 25.2%, bread was 24.8%, dairy products were 7.6%, beverages were 7.0%, noddles were 6.2%, and rice cakes were 3.5%. The kinds of favorite beverages were carbonated drinks(30.3%), functional drinks (24.4%) and milk and yoghurt(23.8%), and main reason for the choice of beverage was "it tastes good". For the point of time that students wanted to drink a beverage, "when I feel thirsty" appeared most often for dairy products and beverages and the next most frequent answer was "after exercise". Therefore it may be necessary to administer systematic nutritional education on perception on nutrition fact label of beverage. And it is thought that plan for proper beverage consumption in elementary school students may be established.
The effects of packaging materials on preserving the functional component of pine bud beverage stored under UV (ultraviolet) light exposure conditions were studied. The order of UV light blocking properties of the selected packages was: opaque can> opaque PET (polyethylene terepthalate) with green lamination=transparent PET with 10% PEN (polyethylene naphthalate) blending> transparent PET, and did not depend on film thickness in specified range. At 20${^{\circ}C}$, the order of preserving degree of original color and endobornyl acetate, which is quality index of pine bud beverage, was the same as above. Exposure to UV light can cause of deterioration of functional food components, but green color lamination and blending of PEN materials with transparent PET help to preserve the UV sensitive pine bud beverage components. However, the treated PET bottles have poorer preservation capabilities than the opaque cans. Transparent PET with PEN blending, in particular, will be very useful packaging material for colorful functional beverage preservation by helping to protect the ingredients while attracting consumer attention.

To produce an intestinal immunomodulatory beverage containing Centella asiatica extract (CAE), three types of CAE-added beverage prototypes were prepared, and their immunomodulatory activities and marker compounds were analyzed. As a result of the cytotoxicity assessment, all the beverages did not show significant toxicity compared to the control group. Next, the immunomodulatory activities of the beverage prototype were evaluated using the inflammatory model of IL-1β-induced intestinal epithelial cell line. All the samples significantly reduced the production of IL-6, IL-8, and MCP-1 in a CAE concentration-dependent manner. In addition, CAE-added beverages inhibited NO, IL-6, and IL-12 production in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells. When the major triterpenoids, as marker compounds for the production of CAE-added beverages, were analyzed by HPLC-DAD, only asiaticoside was detected beyond the limit of quantification, while madecassoside, madecassic acid, and asiatic acid were not detected. The amounts of asiaticoside in CAE-added beverage prototypes were confirmed in No. 1 (19.39 ㎍/mL), 2 (19.25 ㎍/mL), and 3 (19.98 ㎍/mL). In conclusion, the results of this study suggested that CAE-added beverage prototypes induced immunomodulatory effects in the intestinal inflammatory cell line models and asiaticoside could be used as a marker compound for CAE-added beverage production.
This study aimed to analyze beverage usage motives according to selection attributes of beverage shops. Questionnaires were completed by 509 persons living in the Seoul, Gyeonggido area. The results show significant differences by gender, age, and monthly income. Female customers stayed longer and spent more money than males. Younger customers (20's, 30's) stayed longer and visited beverage shops to meet friends. Those with higher incomes stayed shorter and visited beverage shop with company staff. In the factor analysis of selection attributes of beverage shops, there were four factors: 'physical environment', 'economic benefit', 'specialized service', and 'approach convenience'. Two clusters, derived from selected attributes of beverage shops, were 'highly involved group' and 'low involved group'. The 'highly involved group' was high income and highly educated, whereas the 'low involved group' was low income and low educated. 'The highly involved group' drank beverages in the office and school while the 'low involved group' drank beverages at home. The 'highly involved group' cited safety, comfort, pleasure, and happiness more than the 'low involved group' at beverage shops. Beverage shops should develop health beverages such as caffeine or sugar-controlled beverage for 'the highly involved group'. Discounts for take-out beverages and promotional coupons should be used for the 'low involved group'.

The survey was carried out by self-administered questionnaires with 2,200 subjects residing in Seoul. A total of 1,885 samples were used for analysis by using t-test, one way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Duncan's multiple comparison test, factor analysis, and analysis of covariance (ANOCOVA) with SAS computer program. Among various Korean beverage, Donggulre tea was consumed most frequently at an average of 7.4 times per month, and followed by rice beverage, Mi Su, Citron tea, Shick Hae and canned Shick Hae. Among the age groups, the group of 20s showed the lowest frequency of Korean beverage consumption exempt rice beverage. According to occupation group, middle and high school and college student groups showed a high frequency of consumption of cereal based drink such as rice beverage, Mi Su and Yulmu tea. The behavior examination aimed at learning the perceptions relevant to the choice of beverage showed that the subjects believe Korean beverage healthful and nutritious but not familiar through advertisement, not easy to buy, and not to be a habitual drink. The factors influencing the frequency of Korean beverage consumption were shown as health-related factors and habitual/practical factors.

Strategically, it is recommended to appeal those benefits to current and potential members to maximize the loyalty. Also, it should be considered as major factors to re-package hotel F&B loyalty program.

This study was conducted to investigate beverage consumptions in relation to food intakes of Korean young people. One hundred thirty five college students(61 males and 74 females) living in Taegu, Kyung-buk and Taejon answered to questionnaires and recorded three day food intakes between May 20 and June 5, 1997. The preferred beverages were fruit juice, carbonated drink, dairy drink, sport beverage for male students, and fruit juice, dairy drink, sport beverage and carbonated drink for female students. Beverage taken most frequently was coffee for both. Frequent consumption of orange juice was associated with consumption of vegetables, meats, and fats and oils used for frying, and light cola seemed to be consumed with greasy dishes. Beverage consumption contributed to intakes of calcium and vitamin $B_2$more than other nutrients. 4.6% of total energy intake, 15.5% of calcium intake, 11.4% of vitamin $B_2$ provided from beverages in female. Contributions of beverages to nutrient intakes were higher in female than in male students. Calcium intake was the lowest among nutrients for males, and intakes of iron and vitamin A were the lowest for females as compared to the recommended dietary allowances. Therefore it is necessary to guide college students to choose beverages for balanced intakes of necessary nutrients.
