  • This study presents an 8x four-group inner-focus zoom lens with one-moving group for a compact camera by use of a focus tunable lens (FTL). In the initial design stage, we obtained the powers of lens groups by paraxial design based on thin lens theory, and then set up the zoom system composed of four lens modules. Instead of numerically analytic analysis for the zoom locus, we suggest simple analysis for that using lens modules optimized. After replacing four groups with equivalent thick lens modules, the power of the fourth group, which includes a focus tunable lens, is designed to be changed to fix the image plane at all positions. From this design process, we can realize an 8x four-group zoom system having one moving group by employing a focus tunable lens. The final designed zoom lens has focal lengths of 4 mm to 32 mm and apertures of F/3.5 to F/4.5 at wide and tele positions, respectively.

  • In this paper, we propose a new gel-type biomimetic variable-focus lens system. The miniaturization of conventional lens system is limited due to the use of a set of glass lenses for adjusting the focal length. Biologically inspired by the focus adjustment mechanism of the human eye, a gel-type single lens system with variable-focus is presented. The proposed system consists of a gel-type lens, mechanical parts such as body, rotation ring, and winding-type SMA actuator. In addition, the proposed system is designed to operate with a simple and miniaturized mechanical structure using a new attachment and driving mechanism. The focusing performance of the proposed system is verified through a series of experiments and measurements of the shape of the lens using tomography.

  • Currently, it is usually a 3D scanner processing method as a laser method. However, the laser method has a disadvantage of slow scanning speed and poor precision. Although optical scanners are used as a method to compensate for these shortcomings, optical scanners are closely related to the distance and precision of the object, and have the disadvantage of being expensive. In this paper, 3D scanner using variable focus lens-based structured light module with improved measurement precision was designed to be high performance, low price, and usable in industrial fields. To this end, designed a telecentric optical system based on a variable focus lens and connected to the telecentric mechanism of the step motor and lens to adjust the focus of the variable lens. Designed a connection structure with optimized scalability of hardware circuits that configures a stepper motor to form a system with a built-in processor. In addition, by applying an algorithm that can simultaneously acquire high-resolution texture image and depth information and apply image synthesis technology and GPU-based high-speed structured light processing technology, it is also stable for changes to external light. We will designed and implemented for further improving high measurement precision.

  • A method to focus the object in camera system by applying the Hill climb algorithm from optical lens moving device (VCM; Voice coil motor) is proposed. The focusing algorithm from VCM is focus on the object but in these criteria is a well-known drawback; the focus is good only at same distance objects but the focus is bad (blur image) at different distance objects because of the DOF (Depth of focus) or DOF (Depth of field) at the optical characteristic. Here, the new camera system that describes the Reflector of free curvature systems (or Diffractive Fresnel lens) and the partition of focusing window area is proposed. The method to improve the focus in all areas (different distance objects) is proposed by new optical system (discrete auto in-focus) using the Reflector of free curvature systems (or Diffractive Fresnel lens) and by applying the partition of all areas. The proposal is able to obtain good focus in all areas.

  • There are many types of interchangeable zoom lens in the digital single lens reflex camera and the compact digital still camera system in order to meet various specifications such as the field angle. Thus special cases for which the focus adjustment using only an auto-focus group is not available in the focal point correction (that is, the focus adjustment) of both wide and tele-zoom positions are sometimes generated. In order to make each BFL(back focal length, BFL) coincide at wide and tele-zoom positions with each designed BFL, focus adjustment processes must be performed at least in these two points within the zoom lens system. In this paper, we propose a method of focus adjustment by using the concept of focus sensitivity, and we calculate a limit on focus adjustment distance by means of statistical analysis.

  • This study proposed an auto focusing method for a multi-focus image in assembling lens modules in digital camera phones. A camera module in a camera phone is composed of a lens barrel, an IR glass, a lens mount, a PCB board and aspheric lenses. Alignment among the components is one of the important factors in product quality. Auto-focus is essential to adjust image quality of an IR glass in a lens holder, but there are two focal points in the captured image due to thickness of IR glass. So, sharpness, probability and a scale factor are defined to find desired focus from a multi-focus image. The sharpness is defined as clarity of an image. Probability and a scale factors are calculated using pattern matching with a registered image. The presented algorithm was applied to a lens assembly machine which has 5 axes, two vacuum chucks and an inspection system. The desired focus can be determined on the local maximum of the sharpness, the probability and the scale factor in the experiment.

  • In this paper, the geometry between horizontal and vertical movement of lens is studied for automatic vergence control of horizontal moving axis stereo camera. When the disparity of stereo remains contant, the horizontal movement of camera lens for image disparity and the vertical movement for image focus have linear geometry. Using this linearity, we can control the vergence of stereo camera only by focusing of stereo camera lens.

  • Many researches have been performed the analysis and experiments on auto-focus lens due to the development of camera module which is used in mobile-phone recently. Various types of voice coil motor are used mostly in the view point of actuators. Various type of magnetic flux flow is made by the combination of magnet, coil and yoke, etc. And the function of auto-focus is made by the proper combination of the lens components. In this research, some of the simple and economic structure is chosen to investigate the characteristics analytically among various types of lens which are used in industries. Desired level of lens module design was achieved by electromagnetic analysis using ANSYS$^{TM}$ finite element analysis program.

  • An orifice type of aerodynamic lens is generally used to focus nanoparticles. However, it is impossible to focus particles smaller than 10nm in air due to flow instability of fluid in a lens. In this study, we propose a new converging-diverging type of the aerodynamic lens capable of focusing particles of 5-50nm in air. Designing factors of the lens configurations is also extracted and explained in detail through a numerical simulation. It was demonstrated that the aerosols are delivered from the entrance to the downstream of the lens system with 90% transmission efficiency. The final beam diameters are shown to be more or less 1mm in the range of particle size.
