  • In case of hollow cylinder extrusion using porthole die, the effects of extrusion parameters-temperature, the speed of extrusion, the shape of the die and mandrel-on metal flow in porthole die extrusion of aluminum have been investigated. However, there have been few studies about condenser tube extruded by porthole die. Original metal flow of condenser tube by porthole die extrusion is similar to hollow cylinder extrusion but the estimation of metal flow for extrusion parameters is different. For example, variation of chamber length in hollow extrusion only affects the welding pressure, however, the welding chamber length in condenser tube extrusion influences to the welding pressure as well as the deflection of mandrel. This study was designed to evaluate metal flow, welding pressure, extrusion load, tendency of mandrel deflection according to angular variation in the bottom of chamber in porthole die. Estimation was carried out using finite element method in as non-steady state. Analytical results can provide useful information the optimal design of porthole die.

  • Quantitative evaluation of substrates for cells is essential to understanding cell-material adhesive interaction and it is also necessary for the development of new biomaterials. Many cells on adhesive molecules will form an organization of actin into bundles and production of the large, highly organized structures termed focal adhesions. To better understand adhesion formations between cells and substrata, we have quantified the force required to displace attached cell. we allowed rabbit knee chondrocyte to attach on a substratum of microscope slide glass. Our results demonstrate that a force is required to detach cells is changed according to detachment time variation.

  • Objective : Surgical treatment of focal plantar hyperhidrosis is often unsatisfactory compared to palmar hyperhidrosis. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of lumbar sympathetic radiofrequency neurotomy on plantar hyperhidrosis. Methods : From February 2004 to December 2005, 10 patients [mean age 24.3 male 1, female 9] with the clinical diagnosis of plantar hyperhidrosis were treated by bilateral lumbar sympathetic radiofrequency neurotomy of L3 and L4. Patients' symptom relief, satisfactory rate and side effects related to the procedure were analyzed. Results : Radiofrequency neurotomy was effective in the treatment of focal plantar hyperhidrosis showing excellent [more than 75% improved] outcome in 70% of the patients and good [more than 50% improved] in 30%. Complications related to the surgical procedure, such as sensory dysesthesia and compensatory hyperhidrosis were not detected in any case. Conclusion : The use of radiofrequency neurotomy to ablate the lumbar sympathetic ganglion is a safe and effective treatment option for patients with plantar hyperhidrosis.

  • A major impediment in using the Dempster-chafer evidence combination scheme is its computational complexity, which in general is exponential since DS scheme allows any subsets over the frame of discernment as focal elements. To avoid this problem, we propose a method called approximate evidence combination scheme. This scheme is applied to a few sample applications and the experiment results are compared with those of VBS. The results show that the approximation scheme achieves a great amount of computational speedup and produces belief values within the range of deviation that the expert allows.

  • A novel method is proposed for controlling the distance of an image plane in Fourier holograms using varifocal electric-field-driven liquid-crystal (ELC) lenses. Phase Fresnel lenses are employed to reduce the thickness and response time of the ELC lenses. The voltages applied to the electrodes of the ELC Fresnel lens are adjusted so that the lens has the same retardation distribution as an ideal lens. The focal length can be controlled by changing the retardation distribution with the applied voltages. Simulations were conducted for the image reconstruction of Fourier holograms with various focal lengths of the ELC Fresnel lenses. The simulation results indicate that the distance of the image plane can be properly controlled with the varifocal ELC Fresnel lens.

  • Oromandibular dystonia (OMD) is a rare focal form of dystonia caused by prolonged muscles spasms in the mouth, face, and jaw. OMD can develop after dental treatment, as poorly aligned dentures or multiple tooth extraction may cause an impairment of proprioception in the oral cavity, leading to the subsequent development of dystonia. These repetitive involuntary jaw movements may interfere with chewing, swallowing, and speaking. We report here two cases of OMD after dental procedures.

  • In the clinical application of ultrasonic hyperthermia, selective heating of tumor is essential and thus precise control of ultrasonic intensity in both tumor and normal tissue is needed. In this paper, a hexagonal array transducer for ultrasonic hyperthermia is designed and manufactured of which focal point and focal region can be ocntrolled by the digital phase control circuit proposed by authors. Profiles of the focussed ultrasound beam in water and those of temperature in phantom were determined. The experimental and computed results are in good agreement.

  • As Korean engineering contribution to ALMA enhancement, development of focal plane arrays(FPAs) for the total power array in ALMA compact array has been projected mainly to increase mapping speed in interferometric multi-pointing observation(mosaicking). To tackle engineering issues expected in order to be compatible with the existing ALMA receivers, we plan to develop a prototype 300-500 GHz heterodyne FPA system including a software spectrometer using GPU clusters for ASTE(Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment) telescope by 2017.

  • As an enhancement to increase mapping speed of the current ALMA TP array, development of a focal plane array system working at ultra wide frequency range of 275-500 GHz with GPU-based software spectrometers has been carried out since 2015. Major progresses on such component development as wideband DSB mixers, a profiled corrugated horn, receiver optics, LO system and GPU-based spectrometer are reviewed with brief introduction to implication of ALMA 2030 for technical implementation.

  • TLM method to analyize receiver gain characteristic of the FZPL antenna which is operated at 12GHz and can be applied to satellite TV system, radio telescope, and Geodetic System. Some numerical results computed by TLM method are compared with Kirchhoff's approximation and PO method. As a result, receiver gain characteristic on main axis of the 12GHz FZPL antenna is shown at the front side, which means that the focal length is 15% shorter than designed focal length.
