The traditional computational fluid or structure dynamics analysis approaches have contributed to solve many delicate engineering problems. But for the most of recent engineering problems which are influenced by fluid-structure interaction effect strongly, traditional individual approaches have limited analysis abilities for the exact simulation. Owing to above-mentioned reason, nowadays fluid-structure interaction analysis has become a matter of concern and interest. FSI analysis require several unprecedented techniques for the combining individual analysis tool into integrated analysis tool. The Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE, in short) method is the new description of continum motion, which combines the advantages of the classical kinematical descriptions, i.e. Lagrangian and Eulerian description, while minimizing their respective drawbacks. In this paper, the ALE description is adapted to simulate fluid-structure interaction problems. An automatic re-mesh algorithm and a fluid-structure coupling process are included to analyze the interaction and moving motion during the 2-D axisymmetric solid rocket interior FSI phenomena simulation.
This paper presents the numerical design technology of a passive orifice fluid damper system especially for the characteristics between the damper piston velocity and the damping force. Numerical analysis with the visual interfacial modeling technique was applied into the analysis of the damper system's dynamics. A prototype orifice fluid damper was manufactured and experimentally tested to validate the numerical simulation results. The performances of various damper system schemes were investigated based on the verified numerical simulation model of orifice fluid damper.

The optimal parameters for the fluid-structure interaction analysis using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) for fluids and finite elements for structures, respectively, are explored, and the effectiveness of the simulations with those parameters is validated by solving several open surface fluid problems. For the optimization of the Equation of State (EOS) and the simulation parameters such as the time step, initial particle spacing, and smoothing length factor, a dam-break problem and deflection of an elastic plate is selected, and the least squares analysis is performed on the simulation results. With the optimal values of the pivotal parameters, the accuracy of the simulation is validated by calculating the exerted force on a moving solid column in the open surface fluid. Overall, the SPH-FEM coupled simulation is very effective to calculate the fluid-structure interaction. However, the relevant parameters should be carefully selected to obtain accurate results.

During the operation of a hydro turbine the fluid mechanical pressure loading on the turbine blades provides the driving torque on the turbine shaft. This fluid loading results in a structural load on the component which in turn causes the turbine blade to deflect. Classically, these mechanical stresses and deflections are calculated by means of finite element analysis (FEA) which applies the pressure distribution on the blade surface calculated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) as a major boundary condition. Such an approach can be seen as a one-way coupled simulation of the fluid structure interaction (FSI) problem. In this analysis the reverse influence of the deformation on the fluid is generally neglected. Especially in axial machines the blade deformation can result in a significant impact on the turbine performance. The present paper analyzes this influence by means of fully two-way coupled FSI simulations of a propeller turbine utilizing two different approaches. The configuration has been simulated by coupling the two commercial solvers ANSYS CFX for the fluid mechanical simulation with ANSYS Classic for the structure mechanical simulation. A detailed comparison of the results for various blade stiffness by means of changing Young's Modulus are presented. The influence of the blade deformation on the runner discharge and performance will be discussed and shows for the configuration investigated no significant influence under normal structural conditions. This study also highlights that a two-way coupled fluid structure interaction simulation of a real engineering configuration is still a challenging task for today's commercially available simulation tools.
An adaptive modeling and simulation technique is introduced for the effective and reliable fluid-structure interaction analysis using MSC/Dytran for large-scale complex pressurized liquid containment. The proposed method is composed of a series of the global rigid sloshing analysis and the locally detailed fluid-structure analysis. The critical time at which the system exhibits the severe liquid sloshing response is sought through the former analysis, while the fluid-structure interaction in the local region of interest at the critical time is analyzed by the latter analysis. Differing from the global coarse model, the local fine model considers not only the complex geometry and flexibility of structure but the effect of internal pressure. The locally detailed FSI problem is solved in terms of multi-material volume fractions and the flow and pressure fields obtained by the global analysis at the critical time are specified as the initial conditions. An in-house program for mapping the global analysis results onto the fine-scale local FSI model is developed. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified through an illustrative numerical experiment.
This study simulated a control rod assembly (CRA), which is a part of reactor shutdown systems, in immersed and fluid flow conditions. The CRA was inserted into the reactor core within a predetermined time limit under normal and abnormal operating conditions, and the CRA (which consists of complex geometric shapes) drop behavior is numerically modeled for simulation. A full-scale prototype CRA drop test is established under room temperature and water-fluid conditions for verification and validation. This paper describes the details of the numerical modeling and analysis results of the several conditions. Results from the developed numerical simulation code are compared with the test results to verify the numerical model and developed computer code. The developed code is in very good agreement with the test results and this numerical analysis model and method may replace the experimental and CFD method to predict the drop behavior of CRA.

A hybrid model has been developed which adopts a fluid model for electrons and a particle-in-cell (PIC) model for ions. Using the hybrid simulation, the discharge characteristics are investigated with the diagnostics for the electric field and the wall charge profile, density distributions of charged and excited particles, distributions of ultraviolet lights on phosphor, and the visible lights emitted from the PDP cell. Also, energy and angle distributions of the ions at the MgO protective layer are obtained for the analysis of material effect. The comparison of hybrid simulation results with experimental results as well as that with the conventional fluid simulation shows that the new model is more adequate for the simulation of PDP cells.
Three-dimensional and unsteady flow analysis is a practical target of high performance computation. As recently advances of computers, a numerical prediction by the large eddy simulation (LES) are introduced and evaluated for various engineering problems. Its advanced methods for the complex turbulent flows are discussed by several examples applied for aerodynamic designs, analysis of fluid flow mechanisms and their interaction to complex phenomena. These results of time-dependent and three-dimensional phenomena are visualized by interactive graphics and animations.
In this study, design technology of a non-mechanical flow meter using fluidic oscillation generated during the fluid flow in the chamber was investigated. To with respect to design a splitter, which is the most important factor in fluid oscillation, a transient flow simulation analysis was performed for three types of shapes and changes in inlet flow velocity. The oscillation characteristics with respect to the time in each case were compared, and it was confirmed that the SM03 model was the best among the presented models. In addition, the FFT analysis of the fluid oscillation results for the SM03 model was used to obtain a linear correlation between the flow velocity change and the maximum frequency, and a frequency of 20.957 (Hz/m/s) per unit flow velocity was obtained. Finally, injection molding simulation and molding experiment of the chamber with the designed splitter were performed.
