The Gene action for eight quantitative characters related to the plant type was estimated using diallel cross among three different plant types of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) in 2001. The parental varieties used for diallel cross were Ahnnam and Yangbaeck as indeterminate type, ksan22 as semi-determinate type, and dt-45 and Suwon131 as determinate type. In variance and covariance analysis (Wr-Vr) for eight characters the mean square of array except for capsule length, 1,000 seed weight were significant, which suggest that varieties involved in diallel set cross may have epitasis. Complete dominance was observed in the flowering periods, and ratio of matured grains while partial dominance was observed in the plant height, no. of capsules per plant, and no. of branch per plant. Broad sense heritability for flowering periods, plant height, no. of capsules per plant, and no. of branch per plant ranged from 0.91 to 0.99. Narrow sense heritability for flowering periods, capsule length, ratio of matured grain, 1,000 seed eight were 0.18 to 0.34, and plant height, no. of capsules per plant and no. of branch per plant were ranged 0.77 to 0.81.
A new cultivar $Dendranthema$$grandiflourm$ 'Dream Water' was developed at Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research & Extension Services, Korea in 2009. The cultivar 'Dream Water' was initially derived from the cross in 2005 between 'Patra', a spray chrysanthemum cultivar with yellow single type, and 'Ruces', a spray chrysanthemum cultivar with white single type. The cultivar has single type with ivory petals. Trial evaluation was conducted from 2006 to 2009 for selection of this variety, including a shading culture in spring and a retarding culture in summer. The flowering time of 'Dream Water' was October 24th, and year-round flowering is possible by shading or lighting treatment. The diameter of the flower is 56.0 mm. Number of flowers per stem and petals per flower are 11.1 and 26.8, respectively. Its leaf color was green (Green Group 147A) and plant height was 89.7 cm. Days to flowering under the short day treatment is about 54 in spring, and diameter of flower center was 1.4 cm in the summer. The vase life was 16.7 days in autumn and consumer's preference of new spray chrysanthemum is high level than control.

Orchids are indispensable to the floriculture industry due to their unique floral organization. The flowers have two outer whorls of tepals including a lip (labellum), and two inner whorls, pollinia and gynostemiun (column). The floral organization and development is controlled at the molecular level, mainly by the MADS-box gene family, comprising homeotic genes divided into type I and type II groups. The type I group has four sub-groups, Mα, Mβ, Mγ, and Mδ, playing roles in seed, embryo, and female reproductive organ development; the type II group genes form classes A, B, C, D, and E, which are a part of the MIKCC subgroup with specific roles in florigenesis and organization. The coordinated functioning of these classes regulates the development of various floral whorls. The availability of genome and transcriptome sequence data for Phalaenopsis equestris offers an opportunity to validate the ABCDE model of flower development. Hence, this study sought to characterize the MADS-box gene family and elucidate of the ABCDE model. A total of 48 identified MADS-box proteins, including 20 type I [Mα (12), Mγ (8)] and 28 type II [MIKCC (27), MIKC*(1)] members, were characterized for physico-chemical features and domains and motifs organization. The exon-intron distribution and the upstream cis-regulatory elements in the promoter regions of MADS-box genes were also analysed. The discrete pace of duplication events in type I and type II genes suggested differential evolutionary constraints between groups. The correlation of spatio-temporal expression pattern with the presence of specific cis-regulatory elements and putative protein-protein interaction within the different classes of MADS-box gene family endorse the ABCDE model of floral development.

It was unusual crop weather for 1998 and 1999 compared with normal in Korea. The consecutive days of the optimum ripening period for rice plant that had daily mean temperature 21~23$^{\circ}C$ for 40 days after flowering, increased with long anomalies in 1998~99. The air temperature during ripening period was much higher than the optimum temperature and lower sunshine hour than norm in the local adaptability tests of newly developed rice lines during those years. In response of rice cultivation to warming and cloudy weather during crop season, the yield shall be decreased. Most scientists agree that the rate of heating is accelerating and temperature change could become increasingly disruptive. Weather patterns should also become more erratic. Agrometeorologists could be analyzed yearly variations of temperature, sunshine hour and rainfall pattern focused on transient agroclimate change for last a decade. Rice agronomists could be established taking advantage of real time agricultural meteorology information system for fertilization, irrigation, pest control and harvest. Also they could be analyzed the characteristics of flowering response of the recommended and newly bred rice cultivars for suitable cropping plan such as cultural patterns and sowing or transplanting date. Rice breeders should be deeply considered introducing the characteristics of basic vegetative type of flowering response like Togil rices as prospective rice cultivars corresponding to global warming because of the rices needed higher temperature at ripening stage than japonica rices, photoperiod-sensitive and thermo-sensitive ecotypes.
Incandescent (INC) lamps have been commonly used to promote flowering of long-day (LD) plants during short-day (SD) seasons, but production of INC lamps has been prohibited due to their low energy efficiency. One of the light sources replacing INC lamps is a compact fluorescent lamp (CFL). This study was carried out to compare the flowering and morphological responses of LD annuals grown in a controlled environment greenhouse at $20^{\circ}C$ with a truncated 9-h SD and a 2- or 4-h night interruption (NI) or 6-h day extension (DE) provided by lighting from INC lamps, CFLs, or a combination of the two (INC + CFLs), in which red (R) to far-red (FR) ratios were 0.60, 8.46, and 0.91, respectively, and their PPFDs were $2.3{\pm}0.3{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. After 12 weeks of treatment, $Petunia{\times}hybrida$ 'Wave Purple' plants did not flower under the SD photoperiod whereas 100% flowered under all of the LD treatments. Flowering was more rapid under the INC or INC + CFL lighting treatments compared to CFL and DE, and 4-h NI enhanced flowering compared to 2-h NI. In addition, plants under DE and 4h-NI generally flowered earlier than under 2-h NI. All petunia 'Single Dreams Red' plants flowered within 65 days after treatment, and flowering was hastened by some LD lighting regimens and lamp types. Plants under DE and 4h-NI generally flowered earlier than under 2-h NI INC or INC + CFL compared to FL, and flowering time under INC 6-h DE was earliest. In addition, INC lighting promoted stem elongation of both petunia cultivars. In both pansy (Viola${\times}wittrockiana$) 'Coiossus Yellow' and 'Delta Blue Blotch', LD treatments, especially using INC lamps, promoted flowering whereas the lighting period had little influence on days to flowering. Therefore, INC or INC + CFL with lower R:FR promoted flowering and stem extension and the promoting effect was larger with longer lighting periods. These results suggest that CFLs can be used to provide LDs to promote the flowering of petunia and pansy and to reduce stem elongation, although the promoting effect on flowering is sometimes less than that of INC lamps alone.
Four varieties of perilla(Perilla ocimoids L.) were tested to investigate the ecological adaptation of the crop to variations in sowing time extending from April 25 to July 25 with an interval of 30 days between each of the four sowing. As sowing time was delayed, the plant height, the number of first branches and cluster, the weight of fresh and dried stems, the day to germination and flowering decreased, showing a highly negative correlation between the showing dates and these characteristics, but a highly positive correlation between days to flowering and the required accumulated temperature. With early sowing under low temperature and long day conditions, it took about 132 days from sowing to flowering due to the long period of vegetative growth, but as sowing was delayed, the days to flowering decreased with a minimum period of 57 days. The yield of seeds in each case varied with each variety. Type A(Nonsan var.) and type B(Jinchon var.) had higher yields when sowed earlier. But type C(Namyang var. and Wooljin var.) had its highest yield in the plot sowed on May 25 and the 1000 grain weight showed a tendency to increase as sowing was delayed. In conclusion, the perilla was preyed to be a short-day plant that flowers from the begining to the middle of Sep. regardless of sowing time, so that the sowing time should be decided after due consideration of the length of the vegetative growth periods of the varieties.
The present experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of seeding date on agronomic characters including seed weight of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) at Sunchon, the southern coastal area of Korea. One hundred eighteen native and improved varieties were used in this study. As the seeding date was delayed, the number of days to flowering for the cultivars was reduced. This trend was more obvious in late maturing cultivars(LMC) than in early and medium maturing cultivars (EMC and MMC). Late seeding also resulted in decrease in the number of leaves, stem length, and number of nodes. The heaviest seed weight was obtained with EMC and MMC planted on May, and seed weight decreased with delayed seeding date. Seed weight was positively correlated with number of days to flowering, number of total leaves at flowering, stem length and number of nodes on main stem at maturity. Based on seed weight the cultivars was classified into five types: Type I; Seed weight of the cultivars decreases with delayed seeding date. Type II; Seed weight of the cultivars does not vary with seeding date. Tyep III; Seed weight of the cultivars increases with delayed seeding date. Type IV; Seed weight of the cultivars increases when the seeding date approached the appropriate seeding date, but decreases thereafter. Type V; The reversed type IV. Type I, II, III, IV and V occupied 37, 16, 17, 10 and 20% of the tested cultivars, respectively.
Thirty-eight isolates of Phytophthora sp. caused rots on roots and basal stems were collected from five flowering plants from 1992 to 1997 at eight cultivation areas in Korea. All the isolates were identified as P. nicotianae based on following characteristics. The fungus produced markedly papillate, not caducous and ovoid to spherical sporangia, abundant chlamydospores, and small oospores with amphigynous antheridia only when paired with either A1 or A2 mating type. All isolates grew well at 35$^{\circ}C$ and showed distinct arachnoid colony patterns on CMA and PDA. Sizes of sporangia and chlamydospores of five representative isolates from each plant averaged 43-52$\times$30-38 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 28 ~34 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Mating type of the isolates was either A1 or A2, and oogonia and oospores were measured as 28~31 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 21~25 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. PCR-RFLP analysis of rDNA of the five isolates resulted that restriction band patterns of the small subunit and ITS regions were identical to a perilla isolate of P. nicotianae, but distinct from P. cactorum and P. capsici. Cross inoculation tests showed that the five isolates had pathogenicity to lily, christmas cactus, anthurium, baby's breath and carnation with different degrees. However, each isolate showed stronger pathogenicity to its corresponding original host than others. Among five lily cultivars Georgia and Quririna were more susceptible than Napoli and others. This is first report of Phytophthora root and stem rot of lily, Christmas cactus, anthurium, baby's breath and monochoria in Korea.
