Porous medium was considered in the present study for the heat transfer enhancement. This was attributed to its high surface area to volume ratio as well as intensive flow mixing by tortuous flow passages. But when the air or water flow through in the porous medium, it is occurred the pressure drop between inlet and outlet. So in the present study investigated simulation result about the pressure drop in the porous medium before apply to heat exchanger. In this simulation, the thickness of the solid inside the porous medium region was varied 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm. And then the simulation result were compared the pressure drop in the same unit cell ($0.5\;mm{\times}0.5\;mm{\times}0.5\;mm$). To make the analysis model, it was assumed the 14-sided tetrakaidecahedron cell which has long been considered the optimal packing cell first proposed by the Lord Kelvin in 1887. And then the simulation is carried out using by STAR-CCM+ which is commercial software. The simulation result can be showed quantified pressure drop by solid effect in the porous medium.
Recently, there are increasing numbers of study regarding hydrogen fuels but researches on desulfurization of diesel are rare. In this study, we performed diesel desulfurization reactor design by computation fluid dynamics simulation. By analyzing the change in flow and sulfur concentration at the outlet according to the changes in flow rate, reactor length, and reactor diameter, we have found the minimum catalyst performance for the given flow rate condition and the relation between the reactor performance and the reactor size and shape. We also studied the effects of permeability of the packed bed on the flow and sulfur concentration distribution. The present work can be utilized to design a diesel desulfurization reactor for a fuel cell used in ships. Furthermore, the present work also can be used to design low sulfur diesel supply in oil refineries and therefore contribute to the development of clean petrochemical technology.
A continuous flow system has been developed to determine trace Cu(II), Mn(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) in a large volume of water samples by a solvent sublation technique. The mixed solution of 1,10-phenanthroline(phen) and thiocyanate ion was used as ligands for the formation of their ternary complexes. The continuous system was constructed in this laboratory with a peristaltic pump, a mini shaker, three mixing bottles and a flotation cell by connecting each part with a polyethylene tube. The flotation conditions such as the flow rate of sample solution and the injection rates of ligand, buffer and surfactant solutions have been investigated to obtain the best sublation efficiencies. Each solution flowed into the flotation cell through each polyethylene tube by the peristaltic pumps. The ternary complexes were floated and extracted into MIBK in a flotation cell of 2 L by bubbling a nitrogen gas. The absorbances of extracted analytes in MIBK were directly measured by graphite furnace-AAS. The concentrations of 1,10-phenanthroline and thiocyanate ion were $2.6\;{\times}\;10^{-3}$ M and $2.3\;{\times}\;10^{-2}$ M in the mixed solution, respectively. The pH of sample solution was adjusted to 5.0 with a buffer solution and 1%(m/v) sodium lauryl sulphate solution was added as a surfactant to support the effective flotation of the complexes. The $N_2$ gas was bubbled at 30 mL/min for 90 minutes for 20 L of sample. Reproducible results of less than 10% RSD and recoveries of 80-120% could be obtained in real samples.

An integral electrode-bipolar plate assembly, which is composed of electrode, conductive adhesive film (CAF) and bipolar plate, has been developed and evaluated for application with a vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) to decrease contact resistance between electrode and bipolar plate. The CAF, made of EVA (ethylene-vinyl-acetate) material with carbon black or CNT (Carbon Nano Tube), is applied between the electrode and the bipolar plate to enable an integral assembly by adhesion. In order to evaluate the integral assembly of VRB by adhesive film, the resistivity of integral assembly and the performance of single cell were investigated. Thus, it was verified that the integral assembly is applicable to redox flow battery. Through resistance and contact resistance of bare EVA and CAF films on bipolar plate were changed. Among the adhesive films, CAF film coated with carbon black showed the lowest value in through resistance, and CAF film coated with CNT showed the lowest value in contact resistance, respectively. The efficiency of VRB single cell was improved by applying CAF films coated with carbon black and CNT, resulting in the reduced overvoltage in charging process. Therefore, the energy efficiency of both CAF films, about 84%, were improved than that of blank cell, about 79.5 % under current density at 40 mA cm-2. The energy efficiency of the two cells were similar, but carbon black coated CAF improved the coulomb efficiency and CNT coated CAF improved the voltage efficiency, respectively.

In this study, dam-break flows are simulated numerically by using an efficient and accurate Cartesian cut-cell mesh system. In the system, most of the computational domain is discretized by the Cartesian mesh, while peculiar grids are done by a cutcell mesh system. The governing equations are then solved by the finite volume method. An HLLC approximate Riemann solver and TVD-WAF method are employed to calculation of advection flux of the shallow-water equations. To validate the numerical model, the model is applied to some problems such as a steady flow convergence on an ideal bed, a steady flow over an irregular bathymetry, and a rectangular tank problem. The present model is finally applied to a simulation of dam-break flow on an experimental channel. The predicted water surface elevations are compared with available laboratory measurements. A very reasonable agreement is observed.
There is a great demand to manipulate biological cell autonomously since biologist should spend much time to obtain skillful manipulation techniques. For this purpose, we propose a cell chip to control, carry, fix and locate the cell. In this paper, we focus on the cell rotator to rotate individual biological cell based on a micro fluidics technology. The cell rotator consists of injection hole and rotation well to rotate a biological cell properly. Under the variation of flow rate in injection hole, the angular velocity of a biological cell is evaluated to find the feasibility of the proposed rotation method. As a practical experiment, Zebrafish egg is employed. Based on this research, we find the possibility of non-contact rotation way that can highly reduce the damage of the biological cell during manipulation. To realize an autonomous biological cell manipulation, a cell chip with manipulation well and micro channel in this research will be utilized effectively in near future.
BAY11-7082 was initially found to be an anti-inflammatory drug with NF-${\kappa}B$ inhibitory property. In this study, we evaluated modulatory function of BAY11-7082 on U937 cell-cell adhesion induced by CD29 (${\beta}1$-integrins). BAY11-7082 strongly blocked functional activation of CD29 (${\beta}1$-integrins), as assessed by cell-cell adhesion assay. However, this compound did not block a simple activation of CD29, as assessed by cell-fibronectin adhesion assay. In particular, to understand molecular mechanism of BAY11-7082-mediated inhibition, the regulatory roles of CD29-induced actin cytoskeleton rearrangement under cell-cell adhesion and surface level of CD29 were examined using confocal and flow cytometic analysis. Interestingly, this compound strongly suppressed the molecular association of actin cytoskeleton with CD29 at cell-cell adhesion site. Moreover, BAY11-7082 also diminished surface levels of CD29 as well as its-associated adhesion molecule CD147, but not other adhesion molecules such as CD18 and CD43. Therefore, our data suggest that BAY11-7082 may be involved in regulating immune responses managed by CD29-mediated cell-cell adhesion.

This study examines the effects of the ambient temperature (AT), methanol feeding temperature (MFT), methanol concentration (MC) and methanol flow rate (MFR) on the performance and cell temperature (CT) of a 5-stacked direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The AT, MFT, MC, and MFR are varied from $-10^{\circ}C$ to $+40^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$ to $90^{\circ}C$, 0.5M to 3.0M and 11.7 mL $min^{-1}$ to 46.8 mL $min^{-1}$, respectively. The performance of the DMFC under various operating conditions is analyzed from the I-V polarization curve, and the methanol crossover is estimated by gas chromatography (GC). The performance of the DMFC improves significantly with increasing AT. The open circuit voltage (OCV) decreases with increasing MC due to the enhanced likelihood of methanol crossover. The cell performance is improved significantly when the MFR is increased from 11.7 mL $min^{-1}$ to 28.08 mL $min^{-1}$. The change in cell performance is marginal with further increases in MFR. The CT increases significantly with increasing AT. The effect of the MFT and MFR is moderate, and the effect of MC is marginal on the CT of the DMFC.

The Cartesian grid system has generally been used in casting simulations, even though it does not represent sloped and curved surfaces very well. These distorted boundaries cause several problems, and special treatment is necessary to resolve them. A cut cell method on a Cartesian grid has been developed for the simulation of threedimensional mold filling. Cut cells at a cast/mold interface are generated on Cartesian grids, and the governing equations are computed using the volume and areas of the cast at the cut cells. In this paper, we propose a new method based on the partial cell treatment (PCT) that can consider the cutting cells which are cut by the cast and the mold. This method provides a better representation of the surface geometry, and will be used in the computation of velocities that are defined on the cell boundaries in the Cartesian gird system. Various test examples for several casting process are computed and validated.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the anti-proliferative mechanism by Trichosanthes kirilowii (TCK) in MCF-7 human breast carcinoma cell. In this study, we used human breast cancer cell line, Michigan cancer foundation-7 cells (MCF-7 cells). They were co-incubated with 30~200 ${\mu}g$/ml TCK for 48 hours, and cell viability was measured by Water-soluble tetrazolium salt-1 (WST-1) assay. After MCF-7 cells were exposed to 60 ${\mu}g$/ml of TCK for 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 hours, We performed flow analysis cytometry sorting(FACS) and western blot analysis. We investigated the effect of dose-dependent cell growth inhibition by TCK, which could be proved by WST-1 assay. Also, flow cytometry analysis showed that TCK increased percentage of subG1 phase and G2/M phase cell cycle. In addition, TCK induced apoptosis through the expression of caspase-9, -3 and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase(PARP) activation. Moreover, we showed that ATM-dependent G2/M phase arrest by DNA damage and phosphorylation of chk2, cdc25C, cdc2(Tyr15). Taken together, these results suggest that by G2/M phase arrest through DNA damage and inducing of apoptosis through intrinsic pathway, TCK may have potential tumor suppressor in breast cancer.
