As flocculent strains are likely to have considerable potential for internal cell recycle, kinetic studies on glucose medium with flocculent Saccharomyces uvarum were carried out in batch and continuous culture. Using a mathematical model, the kinetic parameters at each temperature and pH were estimated in order to establish optimal conditions. It was found that an overall optimum temperature for growth and ethanol production in the range 33-35$^{\circ}C$ was desirable. With regard to the effect of pH, ethanol production by S. uvarum was found to be relatively insensitive to pH value between 4 and 6, with an optimum pH of around 5. At these optimal conditions a maximum ethanol productivity of 12 g/$\ell$/h was determined using semi-batch process together with 5. uvarum.
The dispersion of organoclay in ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) matrix was correlated with the rheological and swelling properties of nanocomposites. X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) analysis exhibited the disordered-intercalated structure of EPDM/organoclay nanocomposite. The extent of the disordered phase increased with increasing organoclay content up to a limiting value of 3 wt% after which equilibrium tended towards intercalation. The dispersion effect of organoclay in EPDM matrix was clarified by the physicochemical properties like rheological response and swelling thermodynamics in toluene. The increase in viscoelastic properties of EPDM nanocomposite with increasing organoclay content up to 3 wt%, followed by a subsequent decrease up to 4 wt%, was correlated in terms of the disordered and ordered states of the dispersed nano-clay sheets. Swelling measurements revealed that the change in entropy of the swelling increased with the increase in disorder level but decreased with the increase in intercalation level of organoclay in the disordered-intercalated nanocomposite. The increase in solvent uptake was comparable with the free volume in EPDM matrix upon inclusion of silicate particles, whereas the inhibition in solvent uptake for higher organoclay loading was described by bridging flocculation.

This study was conducted to qualify the equality of the flow distribution from open channel between rapid mixing basin and flocculation basins in a domestic full-scale water treatment plant, and suggest a remedy for improving the equality. In order to evaluate the feasibility of the suggested remedy, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique are used, and for verifying the CFD simulation results wet tests were carried out for the pilot scale channel based on geometric similarity. From the results of CFD simulation and wet tests, it was investigated that the modification of hydraulic structure in the distribution channel, which is to install the longitudinal orifice baffle in flow direction, could improve the equality of the flow distribution. Also, in the case that Froude number is relatively small (Froude number <<0.03), the open ratio of orifices on the installed baffle hardly affects the equality of flow distribution.
Microplastics have become a rising issue in due to its detection in oceans, rivers, and tap water. Although a large number of studies have been conducted on the detection and quantification in various water bodies, the number of research conducted on the removal and treatment of microplastics are still comparatively low. In the current research, the inflow and removal of microplastics were investigated for various drinking water treatment plants around the world. Addition to the investigation of filed research, a survey was also conducted on the current research trend on microplastic removal for different treatment processes in the drinking water treatment plants. This includes the researches conducted on coagulation/flocculation, sedimentation, dissolved air flotation, sand filtration and disinfection processes. The survey indicated mechanisms of microplastic removal in each process followed by the removal characteristics under various conditions. Limitations of current researches were also mentioned, regarding the gap between the laboratory experimental conditions and field conditions of drinking water treatment plants. We hope that the current review will aid in the understanding of current research needs in the field of microplastic removal in drinking water treatment.
In the water purification plant, the raw water is promptly purified by injecting chemicals. The amount of chemicals is directly related to water quality such as turbidity, temperature, pH and alkalinity. At present, however, the process of chemical reaction to the turbidity has not been clarified as yet. Since the process of coagulant dosage has no feedback signal, the amount of chemical can not be calculated from water quality data which were sensed from the plant. Accordingly, it has to be judged and determined by Jar-Test data which were made by skilled operators. In this paper, it is concerned to model and control the coagulant dosing process using jar-test results in order to predict optimum dosage of coagulant, PAC(Polymerized Aluminium Chloride). The considering relations to the reaction of coagulation and flocculation, the five independent variables(turbidity, temperature, pH, Alkalinity of the raw water, PAC feed rate) are selected out and they are put into calculation to develope a neural network model and a fuzzy model for coagulant dosing process in water purification system. These model are utilized to predict optimum coagulant dosage which can minimize the water turbidity in flocculator. The efficacy of the proposed control schemes was examined by the field test.

This study conducted to optimize the design and operation of orifice typed distribution channels which were generally constructed to link the rapid mixing process and flocculation/sedimentation basin. To accomplish the goal of this study, programming step method using FORTRAN 90, was applied it to simulate the performance of existing distribution channel in the selected S DWTP (Drinking Water Treatment Plant). The proposed step method program was validated in terms of the feasibility with comparison between the measurement and prediction value in each orifice. From the evaluation results of the current conditions with the design and operation, it was revealed that the existing gradient of the tapered channel is not appropriate. Also, we suggested that in the case of the inlet width being 3.5m, reducing the downstream width by about 0.5m would make more equitable distribution flow in the channel. Consequently, dealing with various conditions of the design and operation with distribution channel, we could conclude that for the parallel typed channel, as the width is wider and the diameter of orifice is smaller, the more equitable distribution occur. In addition, the inlet flowrate and the number of orifice can affect the flow velocity in the channel.
To slove the problems by the scum, which causes operational and water quality problems in water treatment plants, several researches were conducted based on the site investigations on twelve large water treatment plants, biological and chemical analysis of scum, analyzing raw water quality data. Two types of scum, which are from scum and floe scum, can be classified based on the analysis and site investigations. The major parameter generating floe scum was indicated as fine bubbles dissolved in the water. The fine bubbles dissolved in the water can be generated by over-saturated air in the water, adding aluminum surface as the coagulant, conducting the break point pre-chlorination and so on. The water spray method, which is one of the physical treatment methods for removing scum, was selected for conducting experiments on the removal efficiency in the flocculation basin of the real water treatment plant. The water spray method was successfully applied for removing scum with the advantages of using spiral nozzles in case of using the raw water rather than the cleaned water.
Wastewater from crude oil reserve base usually contains large amount of non-biodegradable contaminants. The conventional wastewater treatment progress can hardly meet the regulation of wastewater effluent quality. This study investigated the removal of non-biodegradable organic contaminants in wastewater from crude oil reserve base using a pulse UV treatment. The modified process incorporating pulse UV process was set up to treat the wastewater from crude oil reserve base. The treatment process is composed with coagulation and flocculation, micro-bubble flotation, sand filter, pulse UV system, and GAC filter. The results show CODMn was effectively removed by the process with pulse UV system and it can meet the wastewater effluent regulation. The single effect of pulse UV process in CODMn removal was not significant(9~15% based on sand filtered effluent), however with the subsequent activated carbon filter the removal ratio CODMn was increased up to 28% compared to the process without pulse UV syetem.
The purpose of this study was to establish acceptable criteria for the design of simple water treatment plant in rural areas. To develop efficient simple water treatment methods for rural areas, water quality in the study areas was investigated and rapid and slow filtrations in pilot-scale were tested under various conditions. The main results of this study are as follows. It was found that the water qualities of the study areas exceed the drinking water standards, which implies that some treatments are required in rural areas. Treatment efficiencies of both rapid sand and dual-media (sand and anthracite) filtration without pre-treatment such as flocculation and sedimentation are very low, which were turned out to be unadequate for the rural areas. Treatment efficiencies of both vertical and horizontal slow filtration without chlorination are very high for consumed $KMnO_4, NH_3-N, NO_3-N$, turbidity, and very low for coliform and bacteria. Treatment efficiencies of both vertical and horizontal slow filtration with chlorination are very high over the most pollutants. A slow filtration with chlorination is efficient for the rural areas. An adequate depth of sand layer is over 60 cm. A horizontal filtration is more economical than a vertical filtration. A horizontal filtration can be operated for a relatively long periods of time without sand washing or replacement because clogging is removed by simple back-washing.
This study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of ammonia removal by zeolite adsorption in drinking water treatment. In generally, drinking water treatment process is conducted coagulation/flocculation, sedimentation, sand filtration and disinfection. We tested feasibility with two method, one is powdered zeolite dosing to coagulation tank and the other is to substitute granular zeolite for sand of sand filter. In powdered zeolite test, raw water is used tap water with putting of 2 mg/l of NH$_4$$\^$+/-N. Filtration of granular zeolite was conducted with 80 cm of effective column high and 120 m/d of flow rate. At above 100 mg/1 of zeolite dosage, ammonia concentration was decreased below 0.5 mg/l of NH$_4$$\^$+/-N in powdered zeolite test. But, turbidity was increased to 30 NTU by powdered zeolite dosage. That turbidity was scarcely decreased in generally coagulant using condition in drinking water treatment. In granular zeolite test, ammonia was not detected in treated water until 8 days. This result suggest that using of granular zeolite in sand filter could be removal ammonia in winter. But we need regeneration at zeolite filtration for ammonia removal. So, it is to make clear that zeolite regeneration ability was compared KCl with NaCl. The result reveal that KCl was more excellent than NaCl. Optimum regeneration concentration of KCl was revealed 100 mM. Regeneration efficient was not increased at pH range 10∼12.5.
