Simplified P-M interaction curve model for reinforced concrete columns exposed to standard fire

  • In the authors' previous study, an axial force-flexural moment (P-M) interaction curve model was proposed to evaluate fire-resisting performances of reinforced concrete (RC) column members. The proposed method appeared to properly consider the axial and flexural strength degradations including the secondary moment effects in RC columns due to fire damage. However, the detailed P-M interaction curve model proposed in the authors' previous study requires somewhat complex computational procedures and iterative calculations, which makes it difficult to be used for practical design in its current form. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop a simplified P-M interaction curve model of RC columns exposed to fire considering the effects of fire damage on the material performances and magnitudes of secondary moments. The simplified P-M interaction model proposed in this study was verified using 66 column fire test results collected from literature, and the verification results showed that the proposed simplified method can provide an adequate analysis accuracy of the failure loads and fire-resisting times of the RC column specimens.

섬유보강플라스틱(FRP) 스트립으로 보강한 철골보의 휨거동에 관한 실험적연구 (Experimental Study of Flexural Behavior of Steel Beam Strengthened with the Fiber Reinforced Polymer Plastic(FRP) Strips)

  • 본 연구에서는 콘크리트 섬유보강플라스틱(FRP)로 보강된 철골보의 정적 휨하중상태에서 휨거동에 관한 실험결과를 제시하였다. 아라미드섬유 스트립과 탄소섬유 스트립으로 보강된 4개의 실험체를 제작하였으며, 1개의 기준실험체를 제작하였다. 이중 두 실험체는 부분보강방식으로 보강되었다. H빔은 두 종류의 파괴모드를 가지고 있는데, (1) 부분보강 실험체에서는 FRP 스트립이 탈락(debonding)되는 파괴모드를 보이고 있으며, 전면보강 실험체에서는 FRP 스트립이 파단(rupture)되는 거동을 보이고 있다. 실험결과 16%의 휨내력 상승효과를 관찰하였다.

Experimental and analytical behavior of stiffened angle joints

  • The application of rib stiffeners is common on steel connections, with regard to the stiffened angle connection, experimental results about the influence of stiffeners under monotonic and cyclic loading are very limited. Consequently, this paper presents the experimental investigation on four types angle connections with or without stiffener under static loading and another four type stiffened angle connections subjected to cyclic loading. The static experimental result showed that the rib stiffener weld in tension zone of the connection greatly enhanced its initial rotational stiffness and flexural strength. While a stiffener was applied to the compression zone of the connection, it had not obvious influences on the initial rotational stiffness, but increased its flexural strength. The moment-rotation curves, skeleton curves, ductility, energy dissipation and rigidity were evaluated under cyclic loading. Stiffened top-and-seat angle connections behaved as semi-rigid and partial strength, and rotation of all stiffened angle connections exceeded 0.04rad. The failure modes between monotonic and cyclic loading test were completely different and indicated certain robustness.

  • This paper provides the results of an experimental investigation into the flexural behavior of continuous two-span unbonded post-tensioned high strength concrete (HSC) beams, strengthened by end-anchored CFRP laminates of different configurations in the hogging region. Implementing two different configurations of end-anchorage systems consisting of steel plates and bolts and carefully monitoring the development of strains throughout the load history using sufficiently large number of strain gauges, the response of beams including the observed crack propagations, beam deflection, modes of failure, capacity enhancement at service and ultimate and the amount of moment redistribution are measured, presented and discussed. The study is appropriate in the sense that it covers the more commonly occurring two span beams instead of the simply supported beams investigated by others. The experiments reconfirmed the finding of others that proper installation of composite strengthening system is most important in the quality of the bond which is essential for the internal transfer of forces. It was also found that for the tested two span continuous beams, the capacity enhancement is more pronounced at the serviceability level than the ultimate. This is an important finding as the design of these beams is mostly governed by the serviceability limit state signifying the appropriateness of the suggested strengthening method. The paper provides quantitative data on the amount of this capacity enhancement.

철근콘크리트 중공 하프슬래브의 구조성능평가 (Structural Performance Evaluation of Hollow Reinforced Concrete Half Slabs)

  • 이 연구에서는 철근콘크리트 중공 하프슬래브의 중공형상을 제안하고 휨성능을 검증한다. 실험은 총 2단계로 나누어 수행하였으며, 중공재료는 자중과 진동 감소를 위하여 스티로폼을 사용하였다. 1단계 실험은 중공형상과 간격을 결정하기 위한 것으로 총 3가지 중공형상(구형, 4면 절단형, 5면 절단형)이 사용되었다. 1단계 실험결과로부터 콘크리트 체적 감소율이 높으면서도 균열패턴이 바람직한 중공형상 및 간격을 결정하였다. 2단계 실험에서는 1단계 실험결과를 바탕으로 결정된 중공형상과 간격을 가지는 중공 하프슬래브 실험체의 휨성능 실험이 수행되었다. 실험결과, 제안된 중공형상을 가지는 철근콘크리트 중공 하프슬래브는 휨강도와 연성측면에서 우수한 능력을 보였다.

KL-510 하중모형을 적용한 강합성 2거더교 RC 장지간 바닥판의 최소두께 (Minimum Thickness of Long Span RC Deck Slabs for Composite 2-girder Bridges Designed by KL-510 Load Model)

  • The minimum thickness of long-span deck slab is proposed by checking the limit state according to the Korean highway bridge design code(limit state design). Both minimizing thickness and ensuring safety of deck slab are important design factors to increase a competitive price of the long span deck slabs. The required thicknesses for satisfying flexural capacity, preventing punching shear failure and limiting deflection were calculated by considering KL-510 load model which has increased total load compared to DB 24 from 432 kN to 510 kN. The results of the required thickness for various limit states were compared to propose the minimum thickness as a function of span length of deck slabs. The proposed minimum thickness is influenced by satisfying flexural capacity and limiting deflection. It turns out to be similar compared to the results of the previous study by ultimate strength design method even if the live load model was increased in total weights.

Low-cycle fatigue in steel H-piles of integral bridges; a comparative study of experimental testing and finite element simulation

  • Integral abutment bridges (IABs) are those bridges without expansion joints. A single row of steel H-piles (SHPs) is commonly used at the thin and stub abutments of IABs to form a flexible support system at the bridge ends to accommodate thermal-induced displacement of the bridge. Consequently, as the IAB expands and contracts due to temperature variations, the SHPs supporting the abutments are subjected to cyclic lateral (longitudinal) displacements, which may eventually lead to low-cycle fatigue (LCF) failure of the piles. In this paper, the potential of using finite element (FE) modeling techniques to estimate the LCF life of SHPs commonly used in IABs is investigated. For this purpose, first, experimental tests are conducted on several SHP specimens to determine their LCF life under thermal-induced cyclic flexural strains. In the experimental tests, the specimens are subjected to longitudinal displacements (or flexural strain cycles) with various amplitudes in the absence and presence of a typical axial load. Next, nonlinear FE models of the tested SHP specimens are developed using the computer program ANSYS to investigate the possibility of using such numerical models to predict the LCF life of SHPs commonly used in IABs. The comparison of FE analysis results with the experimental test results revealed that the FE analysis results are in close agreement with the experimental test results. Thus, FE modeling techniques similar to that used in this research study may be used to predict the LCF life of SHP commonly used in IABs.

Numerical and experimental study on flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams: Digital image correlation approach

  • Understanding the realistic behavior of concrete up to failure under different loading conditions within the framework of damage mechanics and plasticity would lead to an enhanced design of concrete structures. In the present investigation, QR (Quick Response) code based random speckle pattern is used as a non-contact sensor, which is an innovative approach in the field of digital image correlation (DIC). A four-point bending test was performed on RC beams of size 1800 mm × 150 mm × 200 mm. Image processing was done using an open source Ncorr algorithm for the results obtained using random speckle pattern and QR code based random speckle pattern. Load-deflection curves of RC beams were plotted for the results obtained using both contact and non-contact (DIC) sensors, and further, Moment (M)-Curvature (κ) relationship of RC beams was developed. The loading curves obtained were used as input data for material model parameters in finite element analysis. In finite element method (FEM) based software, concrete damage plasticity (CDP) constitutive model is used to predict the realistic nonlinear quasi-static flexural behavior of RC beams for monotonic loading condition. The results obtained using QR code based DIC are observed to be on par with conventional results and FEM results.

용융함침법에 의한 반응소결 SiC/SiC 복합재료의 특성 평가 (Property Evaluation of Reaction Sintered SiC/SiC Composites Fabricated by Melt Infiltration Process)

  • SiC/SiC composites and monolithic SiC materials have been fabricated by the melt infiltration process, through the creation of crystallized SiC phase by the chemical reaction of C and Si. The reinforcing material used in this system was a braided Hi-Nicalon SiC fiber with double interphases of BN and SiC. The microstructures and the mechanical properties of RS-SiC based materials were investigated through means of SEM, TEM, EDS and three point bending test. The matrix morphology of RS-SiS/SiC composites was greatly composed of the SiC phases that the chemical composition of Si and C is different. The TEM analysis showed that the crystallized SiC phases were finely distributed in the matrix region of RS-SiC/SiC composites. RS-SiC/SiC composites also represented a good flexural strength and a high density, accompanying a pseudo failure behavior.

  • 오늘날 일부 아파트, 빌딩, 공연장 등 대형 건축물이 내진설계 의무 규정이 없던 시절에 완공돼 지진 대비 조치가 전혀 갖춰져 있지 않은 건축물이 많다. 이러한 건축물을 보강하는 공법 중 가장 널리 쓰이는 방법은 강판접착공법이다. 강판접착공법에 대해서는 많은 연구가 진행되어 오고 있으나, 보의 구조적 거동에 영향을 미치는 다양한 인자들의 영향이나 강성, 파괴양상 등에 미치는 영향들에 대해서는 체계적인 평가가 이루어지지 않은 실정이다. 따라서 본 논문은 앵커에 변수들 준 강판 휨 보강을 앵커접합한 철근콘크리트보에 재하실험을 하여 얻은 자료를 통해 앵커접합에 따른 보의 휨 거동을 연구하여 정립하고자 한다.
