  • A chemically sintered and binder-free paste of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) was prepared using a binary-liquid mixture of 1-octanol and CCl4. The 1:1 (v/v) complex of CCl4 and 1-octanol easily interacted chemically with the TiO2 NPs and induced the formation of a highly viscous paste. The as-prepared binary-liquid paste (PBL)-based TiO2 film exhibited the complete removal of the binary-liquid and residuals with the subsequent low-temperature sintering (~150℃) and UV-O3 treatment. This facilitated the fabrication of TiO2 photoanodes for flexible dye-sensitized solar cells (f-DSSCs). For comparison purposes, pure 1-octanol-based TiO2 paste (PO) with moderate viscosity was prepared. The PBL-based TiO2 film exhibited strong adhesion and high mechanical stability with the conducting oxide coated glass and plastic substrates compared to the PO-based film. The corresponding low-temperature sintered PBL-based f-DSSC showed a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.5%, while it was 2.0% for PO-based f-DSSC. The PBL-based low- and high-temperature (500℃) sintered glass-based rigid DSSCs exhibited the PCE of 6.0 and 6.3%, respectively, while this value was 7.1% for a 500℃ sintered rigid DSSC based on a commercial (or conventional) paste.

  • Recently, as flexible electronic device-related technologies have received worldwide attention, the development of wiring and bonding technologies using liquid metals is required in order to improve problems such as formability in the manufacturing process of flexible devices and performance and durability in the bending state. In response to these needs, various studies are being conducted to use gallium and gallium-based alloys (eutectic Ga-In and eutectic Ga-In-Sn, etc.) liquid metals, with low viscosity and excellent electrical conductivity without toxicity, as low-temperature bonding materials. In this paper, the latest research trends of low-temperature bonding technology using gallium and gallium-based alloys are summarized and introduced. These technologies are expected to become important base technologies for practical use in the fields of manufacturing flexible electronic devices and low-temperature bonding in microelectronic packages in the future.

  • The worldwide use of polyurethane foam products generates large amounts of waste, which in turn has detrimental effects on the surroundings. Hence, finding an economical and environmentally friendly way to dispose of or recycle foam waste is an utmost priority for researchers to overcome this problem. In that sense, the glycolysis of waste flexible polyurethane foam (WFPF) from automotive seat cushions using different industrial-grade glycols and potassium hydroxide as a catalyst to produce recovered polyol was investigated. The effect of different molecular weight polyols, catalyst concentration, and material ratio (PU foam: Glycols) on the reaction conversion and viscosity of the recovered polyols was determined. The obtained recovered polyols are obtained as single or split-phase reaction products. Besides, the foaming characteristics and physical properties such as cell morphology, thermal stability, and compressive stress-strain nature of the regenerated flexible foams based on the recovered polyols were discussed. It was observed that the regenerated flexible foams displayed good seating comfort properties as a function of hardness, sag factor, and hysteresis loss compared to the reference virgin foam. With the growing demand for a sustainable and circular economy, a global valorization of glycolysis products from polyurethane scraps can be realized by transforming them into profitable substances.

  • Three isocyanate groups of IP-$75^{(R)}$ and one hydroxyl group of various amino alcohols were applied for preparing cationic type water-borne polyurthane (PU) having ionic center onto flexible side chains. Average particle size, dispersion stability, viscosity, contact angle, surface energy, glass transition temperature ($T_g$), and adhesion strength of prepared water-borne PUs were measured and analyzed with different NCO/OH mol ratios, ionomers, and neutralizing agents. It was characterized that the prepared PU has a smaller particle size and a better dispersion stability than the conventional cationic water-borne PU containing ionic centers onto main chains.

  • Since the oil shock of '70s the engine makers have developed new types of diesel engine with low fuel consumption. There is an obvious tendency towards the use of poorer quality fuels, such as the residual oil from chemical processes of refinery. The shaft driving generators is also widely adopted on behalf of the auxiliary diesel engines, which are driving on the expensive diesel oil and have high fuel oil consumption rates, and some mania propulsion diesel engines are equipped with reduction gear systems to get better propulsive efficiency by slower propeller revolutions. The propulsion shafting system equipped with the shaft driving generator or the geared diesel engine shafting system has flexible couplings, and it requires extensive investigations of the torsional vibration and torque fluctuation in order to ensure the acceptable operation range in service. The characteristics of misfiring must be especially examined for the high viscosity fuels to be used. Both torsional vibration and fluctuating torque resulted from misfiring, should be examined for thier effects on the flexible coupling and propulsion shafting system. This paper is to investigate and solve the above mentioned problems which must be predicted on the design-stage of marine propulsion shafting system. A computer program is developed to calculate the indicated diagram, fluctating torque and torsional vibration for both normal and misfiring conditions.

  • ${\gamma}$-LiAlO2 fibers for fiber reinforced molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) matrix have been produced from LiAlO2 complex polymeric sols using the sol-gel process. The stable and spinnable LiAlO2 sols could be synthesized by mixing LiNO3 alcohol solutions in aluminum complex polymeric sols prepared through the condensationpolymerization reaction of 1 more of aluminum tri-sec-butoxide with 0.55 mole of mixed chelates (mole ratio of acetylaceton/triethanolamine=0.25/0.3). It was found that the viscosity range for fiber-spinning should be higher than 30 poise. The defect-free flexible ${\gamma}$-LiAlO2 fibers with the average tensile strength of 350 MPa could be obtained when the spinned fibers were heat-treated to 120$0^{\circ}C$ on the specified heating schedule after dried at room temperature.

  • Electro-Rheological(ER) fluid is applied to a controllable squeeze film damper(SFD) for stabilizing a flexible rotor system. ER fluid is a class of functional fluid whose yield stress varies according to the applied electric field strength, which is observed as viscosity variation of the fluid. In applying ER fluid to a SFD, a pair of rings of the damper can be used as electrodes. When the electrodes are divided into a horizontal pair and a vertical one, the SFD can produce damping force in each direction independently. A prototype of the directionally controllable SFD was constructed and its performance was experimentally and numerically investigated in the present work.

  • In this study, various thermodynamic and hydrodynamic parameters characterizing the solution properties of polyethylene ionomer particles in water were determined at $30^{\circ}C$ by means of light scattering and viscosity measurements. Based on the experimental data, we investigated the solution behavior of three kinds of polyethylene ionomers, which are different in composition of the pendant ionic groups of COOK, COOH and $CONH_{2}$, and characterized their particle properties. Ionomers containing 7.6 mol% potassium salt only behave as flexible coils in a relatively good solvent state. On the other hand, two ionomers containing 3.8 mol% amide group together with potassium salt form the compact particles. In addition, the concentration dependence of the effective diffusion coefficient $(D_{eff})$ and the reduced viscosity of the latter ionomers showed the opposite trend from the former, indicating that the composition of the pendant ionic groups have a great influence on the interparticle interaction of ionomers formed in water.

  • The effect of intermolecular aggregation induced by hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions on shear and elongational flow properties of aqueous acrylic thickener solutions is discussed. Complex shear modulus is determined at frequencies up to $10^4$ rad/s employing oscillatory squeeze flow. Extensional flow behavior is characterized using Capillary Break-up Extensional Rheometry. Aqueous solutions of poly(acrylic acid)(PAA)/poly(vinylpyrrolidone-co-vinylimidazole) (PVP-VI) mixtures exhibit unusual rheological properties described here for the first time. Zero-shear viscosity of the mixtures increases with decreasing pH and can exceed that of the pure polymers in solution by more than two orders of magnitude. This is attributed to the formation of complexes induced by electrostatic interactions in the pH range, where both polymers are oppositely charged. PAA/PVP-VI mixtures are compared to the commercial thickener Sterocoll FD (BASF SE), which is a statistical co-polymer including (meth) acrylic acid and ethylacrylate (EA) forming aggregates in solution due to "sticky" contacts among hydrophobic EA-sequences. PAA/PVP-VI complexes are less compact and more deformable than the hydrophobic Sterocoll FD aggregates. Solutions of PAA/PVP-VI exhibit a higher zero-shear viscosity even at lower molecular weight of the aggregates, but are strongly shear-thinning in contrast to the weakly shear-thinning solutions of Sterocoll FD. The higher ratio of characteristic relaxation times in shear and elongation determined for PAA/PVP-VI compared to Sterocoll FD solutions reflects, that the charge-induced complexes provide a much stronger resistance to extensional flow than the aggregates formed by hydrophobic interactions. This is most likely due to a break-up of the latter in extensional flow, while there is no evidence for a break-up of complexes for PAA/PVP-VI mixtures. These flexible aggregates are more suitable for the stabilization of thin filaments in extensional flows.
