  • The flash point is the major physical property used to characterize the fire hazard of flammable liquid solutions. In the present study, the main focus is on measuring and estimating the flash points for binary flammable mixture. The flash points for n-propanol+propionic acid were measured by Seta flash closed cup apparatus. The experimental data were correlated with the van Laar and NRTL equations through the optimization method. The results estimated by these correlations were compared with the values calculated by the method based on Raoult's law. The optimization method were found to be better than the method based on the Raoult's law.

  • Preform design techniques have been investigated to reduce die wear and forming load and to improve material flow, filling ratio, etc. In hot forging processes, a thin deformed part of a workpiece, known as a flash, is formed in the narrow gap between the upper and lower tools. Although designers make tools that generate a flash intentionally in order to improve flow properties, excessive flash increases die wear and forming load. Therefore, it is necessary to make a preform shape that can reduce the excessive flash without changing flow properties. In this paper, a new preform design technique is proposed to reduce the excessive flash in a metal forging process. After a finite element simulation of the process is carried out with an initial billet, the flow of material in the flash region is traced from the final shape to the initial billet. The region belonging to the flash is then easily found in the initial billet. The finite element simulation is then carried out again with the modified billet from which the selected region has been removed. In several iterations of this technique, the optimal preform shape that minimizes the amount of flash without changing the forgeability can be obtained.

  • Recently, flash memory is widely used in embedded applications since it has strong points: non-volatility, fast access speed, shock resistance, and low power consumption. However, due to its hardware characteristics, it requires a software layer called FTL(flash translation layer). The main functionality of FTL is to convert logical addresses from the host to physical addresses of flash memory We present a new FTL algorithm called STAFF(State Transition Applied Fast Flash Translation Layer). Compared to the previous FTL algorithms, STAFF shows five times higher performance than basic block mapping scheme and requires less memory. We provide performance results based on our implementation of STAFF and previous FTL algorithms.

  • The complexity of flash memory based storage systems is high due to diverse host interfaces and other design choices such as mapping granularity, flash memory controller execution models and so on. Thus, it is possible that the actual performance after implementation is not consistent with the target performance. This paper demonstrates that the performance prediction of flash memory based storage systems is possible through performance modeling that takes into account various design parameters. In the performance modeling, the FTL, which is the core element of flash memory based storage systems, is modeled as a set of (copy-on-write) logs and their interactions. Also, the flash memory controller is modeled based on the classification proposed in the design of the Ozone flash controller. In this study, the performance model has been implemented using Simulink and experimental results are presented and analyzed.

  • The flash points are one of the most important fundamental properties used to determine the potential for fire and explosion hazards of flammable substances. A classification of the flash points is important for the safe handling of flammable liquids which constitute the solvent mixtures. Basic to all flash points behavior are vapor pressure and explosive limits(lower explosive limit and upper explosive limit). The flash points of flammable solvent mixtures can be calculated with the appropriate use of the fundamental laws of Raoult, Dalton, Le Chatelier and activity coefficient models. In this study, the reference values of lower flash points were compared with the calculated values by using Raoult's law and MRSM(modified response surface methodology) model. The lower flash points were in agreement with the predicted by Raoult's law and MRSM model. By means of this methodology, it is possible to evaluate reliability of experimental data of the flash points of the flammable mixtures.

  • The typhoon Rusa passed through the Korean peninsula from the west-southern part to the east-northern part in the summer season of 2002. The flash flood due to the Rusa was occurred over the Korean peninsula and especially the damage was concentrated in Kangnung, Yangyang, Kosung, and Jeongsun areas of Kangwon-Do. Since the latter half of the 1990s the flash flood has became one of the frequently occurred natural disasters in Korea. Flash floods are a significant threat to lives and properties. The government has prepared against the flood disaster with the structural and nonstructural measures such as dams, levees, and flood forecasting systems. However, since the flood forecasting system requires the rainfall observations as the input data of a rainfall-runoff model, it is not a realistic system for the flash flood which is occurred in the small basins with the short travel time of flood flow. Therefore, the flash flood forecasting system should be constructed for providing the realistic alternative plan for the flash flood. To do so, firstly, Flash Flood Monitoring and Prediction (FFMP) Model must be developed suitable to Korea terrain. In this paper, We develop the FFMP model which is based on GIS, Radar techniques and hydro-geomorphologic approaches. We call it the F2MAP model. F2MAP model has three main components (1) radar rainfall estimation module for the Quantitative Precipitation Forecasts (QPF), (2) GIS Module for the Digital terrain analysis, called TOPAZ(Topographic PArametiZation), (3) hydrological module for the estimation of threshold runoff and Flash Flood Guidance(FFG). For the performance test of the model developed in this paper, F2MAP model applied to the Kangwon-Do, Korea, where had a severe damage by the Typhoon Rusa in August, 2002. The result shown that F2MAP model is suitable for the monitoring and the prediction of flash flood.

  • NAND flash memory-based file systems cannot store their system-related information in the file system due to wear-leveling of NAND flash memory. This forces NAND flash memory-based file systems to scan the whole flash memory during their mounts. The mount time usually increases linearly according to the size of and the usage pattern of the flash memory. NAND flash memory has been widely used as the storage medium of mobile devices. Due to the fact that mobile devices have unstable power supply, the file system for NAND flash memory requires stable recovery mechanism from power failure. In this paper, we present design and implementation of a new NAND flash memory-based file system that provides fast mount and enhanced stability. Our file system mounts 19 times faster than JFFS2's and 2 times faster than YAFFS's. The stability of our file system is also shown to be equivalent to that of JFFS2.

  • Recently, the size of semiconductor industry market is constantly growing, due to the increase in diffusion of smart-phone, tablet PC and SSD(Solid State Drive). Also, it is expected that the demand for TLC NAND-type flash memory would gradually increase, with the recent release of TLC NAND-type flash memory in the SSD market. There have been a lot of studies on SLC NAND flash memory, but no research on TLC NAND flash memory has been conducted, yet. Also, a test of NAND-type flash memory is depending on a high-priced external equipment. Therefore, this study aims to suggest a structure for an autonomous test with no high-priced external test device by modifying the existing SLC NAND flash memory and MLC NAND flash memory test algorithms and patterns and applying them to TLC NAND flash memory.

  • Recently flash memory is widely accepted as a storage devise of embedded systems for portability and performance reasons. Flash memory has many distinguishing features compared to legacy magnetic disks. Especially, a file system for flash memory usually assumes the form of log-structured file system and it employs garbage collector accordingly. Since the garbage collector can greatly affect the performance of file system, it should be designed carefully considering flash memory features. In this paper, we suggest a new garbage collector for existing JFFS2 (Journaling Flash File System II) file system. By extensive performance evaluation, we show that the proposed garbage collector achieves improved performance in terms of flash memory consumption rate, increased flash memory life time, and improved wear-leveling.
