  • Polyurethane(PU) was mixtured by the treatment with flame retardants such as Tri(chloroisopropyl) phosphate(TCPP), Triethyl phosphate(TEP) and Trimethyl phosphate(TMP) at about $90^{\circ}C$. Rigid polyurethane foam was produced using the mixured products as flame retardants. The mechanical property and flammability of rigid polyurethane was investigated. The mixtured polyurethane shows reduced flammability over virgin polyurethane. Mechanical strength of mixtured polyurethane also shows as high as that of virgin polyurethane. In order to evaluate flame retardant properties of the mixtured polyurethane foams, heat release rate(HRR) of the foam was measured by cone calorimeter. Scanning electron micrograph of mixtured PU shows uniform cell morphology as virgin PU.

  • The aim of this paper is to analyze combustion characteristics of treated woods by fire retardants which are prepared by several borate and phosphate compound solutions. The combustion characteristics for flame retardant treated wood were carried out using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to measure their combustion heat and flame retardant test using cone-calorimeter. The result of TGA and flame retardant test showed that single chemical solution affected the char forming and flame delay. The mixed retardants solutions was believed to be related to the efficacy and property of single chemical. The retention value and concentration of the retardants also affected the performance of fire retardant treated woods. The fire retardants FR1 and FR2 satisfied the requirement of The 3 Grade of Korean building codes.

  • The flame retarded NBR foams were prepared with metal hydroxides and various phosphorus/nitrogen-contain ing flame retardants. The dependency of the phosphorus content on thermal properties, flame retardancy, smoke density, and foaming properties were investigated in the foams. Foaming properties and morphology of the flame retarded NBR foams with P/N flame retardants( ${\le}10 phr$) were similar to those of the foams without P/N ones but containing metal hydroxides The flame retardancy of the foams was improved with increasing the phosphorus content and char formation under combustion atmosphere. The cone-calorimeter test and LOI index were also coincided with the TGA analysis quite well. The heat release rate (HRR), total heat release (THR), and effective heat of combustion (EHC) were decreased, whereas the carbon monoxide yield was increased with increase of the phosphorus content of P/N flame retardant. The smoke density values were closely related with CO yield values obtained by the cone-calorimeter test due to the high and hard char formation.

  • Polyester(PET) fabrics were treated by corona discharge equipment with the small amount of flame retardants to enhance flame retardancy. The surface properties of corona discharged fabrics were investigated using water penetration time, SEM, ESCA, and TGA. When corona discharge was applied to PET fabrics, the flame retardants were evenly distributed. As a result, the oxygen-containing functional groups were produced, and the LOI value increased. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the flame retardancy was operative by gas-phase mechanism.

  • In this study, the thermal improvement of an isophthalic acid polyester resin by the incorporation of flame retardants has been investigated. Aluminium hydroxide, antimony oxide and alumina powder were used to formulate the flame retardant systems. The improvement of an isophthalic resin by incorporating aluminium hydroxide is dramatic(burning rate and smoke emission are reduced), although the mechanical property is decreased significantly. The addition of small amount(2.5 phr) of antimony oxide produces high char yield(31%) which acts as a protective layer on the surface of the resin.

  • The PASCON of the flame resistance and the economic feasibility was prepared by non-halogenate flame retardant system. Prepared PASCON samples contained various flame retardants were subjected to flame tests(KS M 3015). We have studied that the effect of various flame retardants on the inflammability of PASCON and the effect of synergist on the flame resistance. As results, PASCON contained red-phosphorus as flame retardant exhibited excel lent flame retardancy. Also, the improvement of flame resistance is achieved by addition of 2.5phr synergist in the red-phosphorus(RP)/magnesium hydroxide(MH) system.

  • In this study, the flame retardancy and tensile properties of epoxy acrylate resin containing flame retardants based on phosphorous, bromine or metal hydroxide are investigated. It was found that the enhancement in flame retardancy of epoxy acrylate with decabromodiphenyl oxide (DECA) addition was better than the addition of 2,2,2-trichloroethyl dichlorophosphate (TCEDP). It seems that the high loading of TCEDP may delay the formation of crosslinking network and consequently decreases the conversion of epoxy acrylate. It was found that magnesium hydroxide ($Mg(OH)_2$) does not improve the flame retardancy of epoxy acrylate after added up to 40 wt%. The synergic effects were clearly observed for epoxy acrylate containing DECA/TCEDP combined flame retardants.

  • Effect of the flame retardants on Dancheong is studied in the present work. Two kinds of flame retardants were applied on Dancheong specimens and compared with control groups on which distilled water was applied instead of the flame retardants. The flame retardants enhanced the hygroscopic property of the surface of Dancheong. Furthermore, the added flame retardants reacted with oyster shell white($CaCO_3$) and lead red($Pb_3O_4$), producing new chemical compounds like Calcium phosphate tribasic and Lead Phosphates which make the painted layer of Dancheong dissolving and whitening over certain period of time. When applied in excessive amount and exposed in repetitive wet and dry condition, especially, they aggravate the surface problems significantly. These results will provide a good reference on the study of the discoloring/whitening effect of Dancheong layers at many traditional wooden building in Korea.

  • The grafting studies were concentrated on working out the methodology for radiation of flame retardants to polyester/cotton (65/35) blend fabric. The Fyrol 76 was used as a flame retardant in develping methodology for localizing flame retardants on the surface of the blend fabric. By judicious control of the swelling conditions, time_of contact with the monomer, and dose rate, locating the graft in the fiber became possible. The yield of the graft polymerization was depended upon the total dose and the preswelling conditions. Oxygen Index was used to evaluate the effect of the location of Fyrol 76 and other flame retardants within the surface upon the flame retardance efficiencies. To get a better flame retardance efficiency by :the localized grafting of Fyrol 76 to polyester/cotton blend fabric, a technique of one step processing at room temperature was developed substituting the ordinary two-step processing at high temperature.

  • Non-halogen flame retardants have been the focus of extensive research because of environmental problems. Hexakisp-henoxycyclotriphosphazene was synthesized in order to use as the flame retardant of ABS resin. And using bisphenol A, the polymers containing a cyclotriphosphazene structure were synthesized in order to also use as the flame retardant of ABS resin. All of the synthesized polymers themselves had the excellent flame retardancy. And as their molecular weight and crosslinking density were increased, the thermal stability was increased. But when the synthesized compounds were used as the flame retardant for ABS resin, the lower molecular weight compound in these compounds showed the better flame retardancy and the better physical properties of ABS resin.
