  • The aims of this study are to examine urgent problems for reorganization into future-proof large purse seine fisheries in order to positively cope with rapidly changing domestic and foreign fisheries circumstances. First, this paper provides current situations of the large purse seine fisheries. The current situations of it are composed of fisheries influence such as vessel number, vessel power, and fisher number, use of resource and fishing places, and changes in products and sales of species caught by the large purse seine. Secondly, this paper reviews current problems of the large purse seine fisheries including cost reduction and increase of value added. Thirdly, this paper suggests basic development direction and countermeasures for strengthening competitiveness of the large purse seine fisheries. In conclusion, urgent problems of the larger purse seine fisheries can be summarized as inefficiency of distribution structures and retarded landing system and facilities as well as the worse of profitability according to shrink of fishing places, reduction of products, lack of workers, and increase in oil price. To solve the urgent problems, the large purse seine fisheries should be changed into an industry with low cost and high efficiency, and also need to introduce of new production system, strengthen autonomous management of natural resource, and increase in value added to products.

  • This study aimed to know the response of deep-sea squid Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis to the light colors of the artificial bait. This experiment used the commercial artificial flashlight baits commonly sold in the fishing shop. The bait has several different light color combinations. The light colors were modified into several light colors by inactivating certain colors and used as treatments. The study is expected to be able to find flashlight bait's most effective color for squid fishing. We applied red-green, green, blue, and commercial bait lights in this study. Each treatment has 3 replications. The effect was expressed as the amount of squid caught. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance. Results showed a significant effect on the number of squid catches. There was significantly different squid catches among the treatments. It indicates that this artificial flashlight bait could be developed to maximize squid catches. This finding can be used for the local fishermen's income and the squid fisheries development.

  • This study examines the significance and problems of the Fourth Amendment to the Fisheries Act, which went into effect in January 2023. Following the passage of the Aquaculture Industry Development Act, the fourth amendment to the Fisheries Act sought to reform the fisheries legislative framework, while also including significant changes. In particular, a number of new systems for managing fishing gear have been implemented, and local governments now have some autonomy in fisheries management, which has allowed for adjustments to be made to meet the needs of the fishing industry and changes in socioeconomic situations. However, as independent legislation for each fisheries sector continues, the subject of regulation under the Fisheries Act, as well as the Act's position as a basic legal system, has been continuously reduced, overshadowing the Act's objective. As a result, a full-fledged assessment of changing the legislation's name in the future is required, as well as addressing issues such as the lack of difference in the legislative purpose clause and the necessity for further revision of the definition clause. Therefore, any future revisions to the Fisheries Act should aim to overhaul the existing framework, including fishing licenses and permits.

  • We experimentally determined the physico-chemical properties of seminal plasma as well as the sperm cryopreservation techniques of masou salmon, Oncorhynchus masou masou. Seminal plasma contained $18{\pm}1mmol/L$ potassium, $144{\pm}4mmol/L$ sodium, $116{\pm}3mmol/L$ chloride, $83.2{\pm}3.1mg/L$ calcium, $14.8{\pm}0.7mg/L$ magnesium, $45{\pm}9mg/L$ glucose, and $1.0{\pm}0.0g/L$ total protein. The osmolality and pH of seminal plasma were $287{\pm}7\;and\;7.7{\pm}0.1mmol/kg$, respectively, and the spermatocrit was $28{\pm}2$. The rate of embryonic survival at the eyed-stage and the hatching rate were highest in 10% methanol with 300 mM glucose. Compared to DMSO or glycerol, methanol served as a better cryoprotectant of masou salmon sperm.

  • Marine protected Areas(MPAs) are specially designated zones of the sea that are designed to secure operation of ecosystem function and to restore marine ecosystem to the original state by excluding all detrimental human activities. MPAs have been proposed in many countries as means of realizing sustainable fisheries and recently MPAs are newly receiving attention as precautionary measure for global warming and climate change. The purpose of this paper is to examine the possibility of MPAs as fisheries management tools through a wide range of literature analysis and to suggest necessity of fisheries purpose of MPAs in Korea. Establishment of marine protected area can accompany various economic benefits such as restoration of marine environment, preservation of habitats, promotion of marine tourism and so on. Especially, a lot of case studies suggested that MPAs may bring out benefits to the fishing industry as a result of enhanced stocks. Fisheries benefits of MPAs on targeted species include increased abundance, increased mean individual size and age, increased reproductive output, enhanced recruitment inside and outside refuge, maintenance of genetic diversity of stocks, and enhanced fishery yields in adjacent fishing grounds, so called spill-over. MPAs for ecosystem conservation and protection of coastal wetland have been applied appropriately and effectively, however, the Korean MPAs system is still detective due to absence of fisheries purpose MPAs. Finally, suggestions for Korean MPAs can be summarized as following four recommendations; to establish number of small-scale MPAs rather than few large MPAs, to designate island and its surrounding areas as reserve, to consider MPA design with stock enhancement program, and to undertake co-management with Eochon-Gye, the traditional coastal community in Korea.

  • Thousands of pelagic and demersal fishes inhabit the waters around Korea and many of them are overexploited. One of the reasons is technological development, which increases the efficiency of the vessels continuously. The analysis was conducted to identify the change of fishing power index to develop the vessel and gear technology that may have improved the fishing efficiency of the otter trawl fishery from 1960s to 2010s. Gross tonnage was decreased stably, but horse power was increased annually. The perimeter of net mouth was somewhat longer, but little changed. Color fish finder was utilized from the mid-1960s. Hydraulic net drum were introduced in the early 1990s, and supply rate was gradually increased. Surveys on the supply and upgrading of fishing equipment utilized visiting research. Therefore, the relative fishing power index in the trawl fishery increased about two to three times in the 2010s compared to the 1980s. The results are expected to contribute to reasonable fisheries stock management.

  • We describe and illustrate five species of shrimp of the genus Solenocera, collected from the Korean exclusive economic zone (EEZ) between 2001 and 2003 and a commercial seafood market in Busan, South Korea, in 2005. Four of these species, S. alticarinata Kubo 1949, S. comata Stebbing 1915, S. koelbeli De Man 1911, and S. pectinulata Kubo 1949, are new records for the Koreas. The fifth, S. melantho De Man 1907, is a ubiquitous and commercially important species in the region. This report extends the known range of S. pectinulata to Jeju Island in the East China Sea. A key to these species is presented.

  • Marine sediments and bivalves were sampled at 20 stations from coastal regions of Korea, to investigate the levels and patterns of some chlorobenzene isomers. Total chlorobenzenes were in the range of 0.32-3.55 ng/g dry weight in marine sediments and 0.26-0.84 ng/g wet weight in bivalves. Hexachlorobenzene levels in marine sediments and bivalves were lower thar or comparable to those levels of reported in other countries. Isomeric patterns of some chlorobenzenes in marine sediments and bivalves were slightly different. However, the pre-dominant isomer in marine sediments and bivalves was 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene. Hexachlorobenzene contribution to total concentrations was higher in sediments than in bivalves.

  • This research is to estimate population parameters of the Korean horse mackerel stock and to determine the status of the stock. Considering the linkage of recruitment with the variation of environmental conditions in the early life history, acceptable biological catch (ABC) of horse mackerel was estimated. (omitted)
