The pirarucu, Arapaima gigas (body weight = 18.3 kg and total length = 102 cm) which had been reared in one of the private commercial aquaria for exhibition was found dead and submitted for diagnostic examination. A pure bacterial culture was isolated from the kidney, which was enlarged, and contained fluids. Result of the bacterial identification yielded Serratia fonticola. This paper describes the first isolation of S. fonticola from pirarucu.
The effect of $\beta$-glucan administration on the resistance of Korean catfish(Silurus asotus) to experimental Edwardsiella ictaluri and Aeromonas hydrophila infection was evaluated. Fish were either intraperitoneally received $\beta$-glucan($200\sim1000{\mu}g$/100g body weight) dissolved in physiological saline once or twice at an intervals of 3 days, or placed in $\beta$-glucan bath($100{\mu}g/m\ell$) prepared with filtered tap water for 30 or 60 min. Bacterial challenge was performed by intraperitoneal injection of 0.1 ml of bacteria suspension($2{\times}10^7 CFU/m\ell$) 3 days after $\beta$-glucan administration. The $\beta$-glucan injected fish showed an significantly enhanced resistance against experimental infections. The resistance was much higher in the twice-injected fish than in the once-injected fish. But glucan bath did not affect survival rate after the challenge. The protective effect in the $\beta$-glucan injected fish was higher to A. hydrophila than to E. ictaluri. These results indicate that $\beta$-glucan injection can increase the resistance of Korean catfish against experimental E. ictaluri and A. hydrophila infection and that twice injection of $\beta$-glucan at an 3 day-intervals is more effective to the resistance.
Several bacterial etiological agents of streptococcal disease have been associated with fish mortality and serious global economic loss. Bacterial identification based on biochemical, molecular, and phenotypic methods has been routinely used, along with assessment of morphological analyses. Among these, the molecular method of 16S rRNA sequencing is reliable, but presently, advanced genomics are preferred over other traditional identification methodologies. This review highlights the geographical variation in strains, their relatedness, as well as the complexity of diagnosis, pathogenesis, and various control methods of streptococcal infections. Several limitations, from diagnosis to control, have been reported, which make prevention and containment of streptococcal disease difficult. In this review, we discuss the challenges in diagnosis, pathogenesis, and control methods and suggest appropriate molecular (comparative genomics), cellular, and environmental solutions from among the best available possibilities.
This study was performed to determine the disinfection efficacy of influent seawater by application of mechanical filtration and UV disinfection system (MFUVDS) in decreasing disease outbreak of juvenile olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). Bacterial disinfection rate of influent seawater following the MFUVDS application was 99.27%. Mortalities of the juvenile reared for 4 months were 20~30% lower than those of the control (25.8%~34.9%).
The prevalence of the scuticociliatosis in flounder farms of Jeju island was surveyed for ten years from 1995 to 2004. The occurrence ratio had maintained as less than 10% until mid 1990s, and shown increasing trends to year 1998. The ratio was equivalent to over 40% of overall disease occurrences in flounder farms since year 2000. The monthly infection rates by the scuticociliates indicated relatively higher levels from May to September, and mixed infection phenomena with bacterial disease of vibriosis were common.
Disease surveillance was performed to monitor the prevalence of fish pathogens in wild marine fish caught in coastal offshore water in Korea. A total of 333 of fish samples were collected at set net or fish market at landing port in Pohang (East Sea), Taean (Western Sea), Goseong and Tongyeong (Southern Sea) and 21 species of pathogens causing clinical infections to farmed fish were investigated. The detection rates of fish pathogens from Mugili formes, Tetraodontiformes, Pleuroneciformes, Sorpaeniformes, erciformes and Clupeiformes were 90.9, 61.1, 47.6, 43.6, 37.2 and 11.8%, respectively. Comparing with prevalence of diseases seasonally, both the detection rates of bacteria and parasite were higher than those of virus in April but the detection rates of parasites were distinctively higher than those of bacteria in August with high water temperature. Virus were detected in fish samples caught in the Western and Southern Sea in April. The detected parasites were Trichodina, Ichthyophthirius, Dactylogyrus, Microcotyle, Bivagina, Caligus, Alella and Myxobolus. Among the bacterial pathogens, Vibrio, Streptococcus, Photobacterium, Psuedomonas were predominant. Viral nervous necrosis virus (VNNV) and flounder lymphocystis disease virus (FLDV) were detected from the 6 species of fish virus examined in this study.
Parasitic leeches could directly (through causing poor growth, anemia and wound in the fish) and indirectly (by predisposition of the fish to secondary bacterial and fungal infections) affects their hosts. In the present study, fishes that were attacked by leeches in natural and experimental environment were studied. Pathologic samples were obtained from damages at the site of leech bite, as well as kidney and liver of the fish. Histopathological examination revealed numerous lesions at the site of leech bite including tissue demolition, detachment at the site of leech bite in the epidermis of epithelial tissue in the skin, destructed nucleus in epithelial cells of the skin plus necrosis in the damaged skin and weak inflammatory penetration to acute necrotic damages along with piercing dermis layer. Pathologic lesions in the kidney included some changes such as proliferation by increasing glomerular cells and membrane cells in capillary vein of the kidney, blood cell necrosis in kidney with infiltration of white blood cells mainly mononuclear and less polymorphonuclear which are the symptoms of anemia due to blood feeding and sucking by leeches. There was also a chronic kidney infection probably originated from another part of body such as skin. Moreover, leeches caused hemorrhagic anemia due to blood consumption of the hosts, which led to observation of immature red blood cells. Also results showed that diseases induced by leeched in fish could be acute or chronic, which depends on size of fish, species of leech and severity of infection.
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) as flame-retardant additives have been used in a wide array of products, including building materials, electronics, furnishings, motor vehicles, airplanes, plastics, polyurethane foams, and textiles. They are structurally similar to PCBs and other polyhalogenated compounds. PBDEs are found in a variety of foods, and 95% of all human exposure to POPs comes from food. The major food sources are fish/seafood and dairy products. A number of studies have reported high levels of PBDEs in animals, increasing the public's concern over PBDE levels in animals. This study evaluates the relationship between the level of PBDEs according to piglet diseases. Salmonella spp. and Streptococcus are bacterial diseases. Porcine respiratory reproductive syndrome (PRRS) is a viral disease. The concentration of PBDEs in the piglet liver from viral diseases was higher than that from bacterial diseases. BDE-47 and BDE-99 were detected in most samples. More PBDEs were detected in the piglet liver from PRRS of North American type than from that of European type.

In this study, 79 bacterial isolates were collected from the surface of marine algae Umbraulva japonica. As a result of analysis of 16s rRNA gene sequence, the 79 isolated bacteria were divided into 4 major groups: [Proteobacteria (74.69%), Actinobacteria (2.53%), Fimicutes (2.53%), and Bacteroidetes (20.25%)] - 7 classes (Actinobacteria, Flavobacteria, Sphingobacteria, Baciili, Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, and Gammaproteobacteria), 12 orders, 17 families and 31 genera. The newly isolated 3 strains could be novel species because of less than 97% similarity in 16s rRNA sequence. Therefore, it is considered that additional experiments should be conducted together with the standard strain. Analysis of 79 bacterial antibacterial activity against human and fish pathogens, such as Edwardsiella tarda, Vibrio harveyi, Streptococcus iniae, Steptococcus parauberis, Escherichia coli, Steptococcus mutans, Listeria monocytogenes and Vibrio vulnificus, was performed by using the supernatant liquid and pellet. As a result, pellet of UJT9, UJT20 and UJR17 showed antibacterial activity against V. vulnificus, UJR17 also showed antibacterial activity against S. parauberis. UJT7 and UJT20, UJR17 have been identified as Bacillus sp. and Pseudomonas sp. and it may be safely assented that it's beneficial to carry out additional experiments for various applications.
In this study, the disinfectant efficacy of Aqua farmsafe$^{(R)}$, composed of didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC) and yucca extract was evaluated against Salmonella typhimurium and fish pathogens. Determination of the anti-microbial or anti-viral efficacy of the disinfectant was based on Animal, Plant and Fisheries Quarantine and Inspection Agency Regulation No. 2011-26, Korea. Anti-bacterial efficacy test by broth dilution method was used to determine the lowest effective dilution of the disinfectant following exposure to test bacteria for 30 min at $4^{\circ}C$. Aqua farmsafe and test bacteria or virus were diluted with distilled water (DW), standard hard water (SW) or organic matter dilution (OM) according to treatment condition. Under the our results, disinfectant efficacy of Aqua farmsafe$^{(R)}$ possesses 30~40 fold against fish pathogens including bacteria and virus compared to that on animal pathogenic bacteria, S. typhimurim. As the efficacy of Aqua farmsafe$^{(R)}$ against fish pathogen was investigated in vitro, a controlled field trial is required to determine whether the use of Aqua farmsafe$^{(R)}$ will be able to reduce fish diseases.
