  • In the present study the behavior of fire and the residual strength of fire-ignited RC slabs are investigated by experimental tests and numerical simulations. The fire tests of RC slabs were carried out in a furnace using the ISO 834 standard fire. The load capacity of the cooled RC slabs that were not loaded during the fire tests was evaluated by additional 3 point bending tests. The influence of the proportion of PP (polypropylene) fibers in the RC slabs on the structural behavior of the RC slabs after the fire loading was investigated. The results of the fire tests showed that the maximum temperature of concrete with PP fiber was lower than that of concrete without PP fiber. As the concrete was heated, the ultimate compressive strength decreased and the ultimate strain increased. The load-deflection relations of RC slabs after fire loading were compared by using existing stress-strain-temperature models. The comparison between the numerical analysis and the experimental tests showed that some numerical analyses were reliable and therefore, can be applied to evaluate the ultimate load of RC slabs after fire loading. The ultimate load capacity after cooling down the RC slabs without PP fiber showed a considerable reduction from that of the RC slabs with PP fiber.

  • Concrete filled steel Tube(CFT) columns have great strength but also fire resistance performance due to the heat storage effect of concrete. In this research, we focus on the fire performance of CFT using 100 MPa concrete without fire protection. We use steel fiber and nylon fiber for fire resistance. We perform the fire test of CFT specimen with loading 200, 300 and 400 ton. To investigate the effect of loading to fire resistance, we compare the fire resistance time according to the loading.

  • The fire resistance performance of 2 RC slabs after exposure to the ISO-834 fire standard without loading has been experimentally investigated. A Comparison is made of the fire resistance performance between RC slabs without PP(polypropylene) fibers and RC slabs with PP fibers. From the fire test results, the presence of PP fibers in RC slabs can reduce spalling and enhance their fire resistance. Until now, the determination of fire resistance of reinforced concrete(RC) slabs has essentially been based on tabulated data. According to ACI 216 code and EUROCODE 2, the design of concrete structures is essentially based on tabulated data for appropriate concrete cover and various fire durations. From the comparison between fire test results and codes, current fire design provisions of codes such as the ACI 216 and the EUROCODE 2 are unconservative for estimating mechanical properties of RC slabs at elevated temperatures.

  • The 180 minutes fire test based on the standard curve of ISO-834 were conducted on three RC column specimens with different constant axial loading ratios to evaluate the fire performance of fiber cocktail (polypropylene+steel fiber) reinforced high strength concrete column. The columns were tested under three loading levels as 40%, 50%, and 61% of the design load. No explosive spalling has been observed and the original color of specimen surface has been changed to light pinkish grey. The maximum axial displacements of three specimens were 1.5~2.2 mm. There was no reduction in load bearing capacity of each specimen exposed to fire and no effect were observed on the fire performance within 61% of the design load. The tendencies of the results with loading, such as the temperature distribution of in concrete and the changes in temperature rise due to the water vaporization in concrete, are very similar to those without loading. The final temperatures of steel rebar after 180 minutes of fire test resulted in 491.4${^{\circ}C}$ for corner rebar, 329.0${^{\circ}C}$ for center rebar, and 409.8${^{\circ}C}$ for total mean of steel rebar. The difference of mean temperature between corner and center rebar was 153.7${^{\circ}C}$ㅍ. The tendency of temperature rise in concrete and steel rebar changed after 30~50 minutes from the starting time of the fire test because the heat energy influx into corner rebar is larger than that into center rebar. The cause of decrease in temperature rise was due to the water vaporization in concrete, the lower temperature gradient of the concrete with steel and polypropylene fiber cocktails, the moisture movement toward steel rebars and the moisture clogging.

  • To prevent the explosive spalling of the high strength concrete and control the rise of temperature in the steel rebar during fire, a fiber cocktail method has been proposed simultaneously with the use of polypropylene and steel fiber. After applying the fiber cocktail (polypropylene and steel fibers) into the mixture of high strength concrete with a compressive strength of between 40 and 100 MPa and evaluating the thermal properties at elevated temperatures, the fire test was carried out on structural members in order to evaluate the fire resistance performance. Two column specimens were exposed to the fire without loading for 180 minutes based on the standard curve of ISO-834. No explosive spalling has been observed and the original color of specimen surface was changed to light pinkish grey. The inner temperature of concrete dropped rapidly starting from 60mm deep. After 60 minutes of exposure to the fire, the temperature gradient of fiber cocktail reinforced high strength concrete was measured as 2.2oC/mm, which is approximately 5 times less than that of normal concrete. The final temperatures of steel rebar after 180 minutes of fire test resulted in 488.0oC for corner rebar, 350.9oC for center rebar, and 419.5oC for total mean of steel rebar. The difference of mean temperature between corner and center rebar was 137.1oC The tendency of temperature rise in concrete and steel rebar changed between 100oC and 150oC The cause of decrease in temperature rise was due to the water vaporization in concrete, the lower temperature gradient of the concrete with steel and polypropylene fiber cocktails, the moisture movement toward steel rebars and the moisture clogging.

  • A rack warehouse with a vertically loading type and high loading density has severe risks and damage during its fire. In this regard, US and Japan strive to minimize the fire spread by applying in-rack sprinkler, horizontal barriers, etc. corresponding to their own rack warehouse but there is no study and policy in Korea. Therefore, a model scale fire test was carried out targeting the standard rack incorporating the national rack warehouse in order to check fire characteristics in ignition points and installation distances of horizontal barriers in this study. As a result of the test, vertical fire spread of about 30% was inhibited by narrowing its installation distance from 2-layer to 1-layer in an ignition condition of the flue space. In addition, as a result of the measurement of the temperature in the upper and lower parts of the horizontal barrier, the temperature distribution showed about 2~4 higher in a condition with an installation of the barrier than that in the condition without the barrier. Consequently, it is likely that the horizontal barrier will help the initial operation of in-rack sprinkler.

  • This study presents experimental investigation on the residual capacity of fire-damaged voided slabs according to loading conditions. In this study, two voided slab specimens were fabricated, and heated by ISO standard fire during 120 minutes with different loading conditions of presence of loading. These specimens were cooled down to room temperature, and the residual capacity of fire-damaged voided slabs was investigated. Based on test results, thermal distribution of voided slab through the depth of concrete sections is different by the loading conditions. The temperature of loaded specimen is rapidly elevated through the whole depth of concrete sections compared to the unloaded specimen. The residual strength of fire-damaged voided slab specimens are 60% and 66% of that of voided slab specimen without fire damage, and the residual stiffness of fire-damaged voided slab specimens decreases by 15%~23% of that of voided slab specimen without fire damage. In case of voided slab specimens subjected ISO standard fire, the loaded specimen shows the decrease of 10% in the residual strength and the decrease of 15% in the residual stiffness compared to the unloaded specimen. It seems to result from higher temperature of bottom reinforcements in the loaded specimen due to the cracks, and more extensive damage on concrete cover of reinforcements by spalling process according to load level.

  • In this study, experiment and numerical analysis were conducted to identify the heat transfer characteristics and behavior of high-strength concrete upon a fire. The numerical analysis was employed to forecast the characteristics and properties of the high-strength concrete upon a fire, which can not be accomplished through a fire test due to the specific conditions and restrictions associated with the test. The result of the numerical analysis was compared with that of the test to verify the reliability of the analysis. In the numerical analysis of the heat transfer characteristics and behavior of 80 and 100 MPa high-strength concrete upon a fire, the commercial software of ABAQUS(V.6.8) was used. It was observed from the experiment that the contraction of the concrete with fiber-cocktail was mitigated by 25~55 % compared with that without fiber-cocktail because the fiber controlled the heat transfer of the concrete and thus improved the fire-resistance performance of the column.

  • Heat release characteristics of live fire load are an important parameter for performance oriented fire safety design of a building. While investigations have been carried out on the fire load and its burning behavior in office, residential and commercial buildings and so on, little effort has been paid for the rational treatment of fire load in post office buildings in Japan. In this report, burning behavior of typical combustible objects in post office buildings are studied by measuring heat release rates of plastic palettes with and without postal envelopes or packages and special containers loading numbers of palettes. The test results suggest that dynamic heat release rate is highly dependent on the condition of palettes especially if they load appropriate amount of postal envelopes or not.

  • Concrete filled tube (CFT) columns, which consist of a steel tube filled with concrete, combine the benefits of the two materials. The steel tube provides a confining pressure to the concrete, while the local buckling of steel plate can be prevented by the concrete core. CFT columns also have a high fire resistance due to the heat storage effect of concrete under fire. For this reason, it is possible to develop CFT columns without fire protection measures. CFT columns without fire protection have many advantages, including quality control, cost reduction, better space efficiency and a shorter construction period. Due to these advantages, studies on the development of CFT columns without fire protection measures have been performed. However, CFT columns lose their bearing capacity under fire because the steel tube is exposed to the outside. As a result, the structure is collapsed, causing significant damage. In this research, we made a CFT column using high strength concrete (100 MPa) and high strength steel (800 MPa). We use steel fiber and nylon fiber with concrete to provide fire resistance. We perform the fresh concrete experiment and investigate the fire resistance of the CFT column (${\Box}400{\times}400{\times}15{\times}3000mm$) under loading. To investigate the effect of steel fiber on increasing fire resistance, we compare the fire resistance time according to the steel fiber. Through the test, it was found that the CFT specimen with steel fiber had better fire resistance performance than other cases.
