  • In this study, the results of the elasto-plastic beam analysis, finite element analysis and optimization design of the steel pipe sheet pile applied as an earth retaining wall under the deep excavation were presented. Through this study, it was found that the high-strength and sea resistant steel pipe has high allowable stress, excellent structural properties, favorable corrosion, and high utilization as an earth retaining wall, and the C-Y type joint has significantly improved the tensile strength and stiffness compared to the traditional P-P type. In addition, it was investigated that even if the leak or defect of the wall occurs during construction, it has the advantage of being able to be repaired reliably through welding and overlapping. In the case of steel pipe wall, they were evaluated as the best in views of the deep excavation due to the large allowable bending stress and deformation flexibility for the same horizontal displacement than CIP or slurry wall. Elasto-plastic and finite element analysis were conducted in consideration of ground excavation under large-scale earth pressure (uneven pressure), and the results were compared with each other. Quantitative maximum value were found to be similar between the two methods for each item, such as excavation behavior, wall displacement, or member force, and both analysis method were found to be applicable in design for steel pipe sheet pile wall. Finally, it was found that economical design was possible when determining the thinnest filling method with concrete rather than the thickest hollow shape in the same diameter, and the depth (the embedded length through normality evaluation) without rapidly change in displacement and member force.

  • Stress concentrations around discontinuities, such as a hole in cross section of a structural member, have great importance because the most materials failure around the region may be occurred. Stress on the point applied by concentrated load reaches much larger value than the average stress in structural member. In this paper, stress analysis was performed for the plate with a partial through-hole to find the difference of the principal stress distribution. The difference between maximum principal stress and minimum principal stress in photoelasticity is equal to the value obtained by multiplying the isochromatic fringe order by the fringe constant of the material divided by the distance through which the light passes, that is, the thickness of the specimen. Since the difference of principal stress is proportional to the photoelastic fringe order, the distribution of the principal stress difference by the finite element analysis can be compared with the photoelasticity experimental result. ANSYS Workbench, that is the finite element software, is used to compute the differences of principal stresses at the specific points on the measured lines. The computation values obtained by ANSYS are compared with the experimental measurements by photoelasticity, and two results are comparable to each other. In addition, the stress concentration factor is obtained using the stress distribution analyzed from the variation of hole depth. Stress concentration factor is increasing, as the depth of hole increase.

  • Recently, the probability of collision accident between vehicles or vessels and infrastructures are increasing at alarming rate. Particularly, collision impact load can be detrimental to sub-structures such as piers and columns. The damaged pier from an impact load of a vehicle or a vessel can lead to member damages, which make the member more vulnerable to impact load due to other accidents which. In extreme case, may cause structural collapse. Therefore, in this study, the vehicle impact load on concrete compression member was considered to assess the quantitative design resistance capacity to improve, the existing design method and to setup the new damage assessment method. The case study was carried out using the LS-DYNA, an explicit finite element analysis program. The parameters for the case study were cross-section variation of pier, impact load angle, permanent axial load and axial load ratio, concrete strength, longitudinal and lateral rebar ratios, and slenderness ratio. Using the analysis results, the performance based resistance capacity evaluation method for impact load using satisfaction curve was developed using Bayesian probabilistic method, which can be applied to reinforced concrete column design for impact loads.

  • The effect of the steel pipe member joint on the design performance of a plastic multi-span greenhouse was analysed through the comparing full-scale experiment and numerical analysis. The design performance of the greenhouse is generally evaluated through numerical analysis, but it is rare to consider the characteristics of the connections or joints of the members. In this study, the effect of the column-gutter beam-rafter-wind break wall joint on the design performance of the whole structure of a plastic multi-span greenhouse was analysed. The numerical results with assuming that the member joint are rigid condition were compared with the full-scale load test results using member joints used in the field. The stiffness of the entire structure was compared using the load-displacement relationship and the change of the load sharing ratio that the main members such as column, rafters, and wind break wall was analysed. The results of the load test were about 40% larger than the numerical result and the member stress was more than twice as large as those of the loaded columns. In order to increase the reliability of the design performance of the greenhouse, it is necessary to develop a numerical analysis model which can consider the characteristics of various joints.

  • This paper presents an investigation on the geometric nonlinear behavior of cable-stayed bridges using geometric nonlinear finite element analysis method. The girder and mast in cable-stayed bridges show the combined axial load and bending moment interaction due to horizontal and vertical forces of inclined cable. So these members are considered as beam-column member. In this study, the nonlinear finite element analysis method is used to resolve the geometric nonlinear behavior of cable-stayed bridges in consideration of beam-column effect, large displacement effect (known as P-${\delta}$ effect) and cable sag effect. To analyze a cable-stayed bridge model, nonlinear 6-degree of freedom frame element and nonlinear 3-degree of freedom equivalent truss element is used. To resolve the geometric nonlinear behavior for various live load cases, the initial shape analysis is performed for considering dead load before live load analysis. Then the geometric nonlinear analysis for each live load case is performed. The deformed shapes of each model, load-displacement curves of each point and load-tensile force curves for each cable are presented for quantitative study of geometric nonlinear behavior of cable-stayed bridges.

  • The standard prestressed concrete I-girder bridge (PSC I-girder bridge) is one of the most prevalent types for small and medium bridges in Korea. When determining the member forces in a section to assess the safety of girder in this type of bridge, the general practice is to use the simplified practical equations or the live load distribution factors proposed in design standards rather than the precise analysis through the finite element method or so. Meanwhile, the live load distribution factors currently used in Korean design practice are just a reflection of overseas research results or design standards without alterations. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an equation of the live load distribution factors fit for the design conditions of Korea, considering the standardized section of standard PSC I-girder bridges and the design strength of concrete. In this study, to develop an equation of the live load distribution factors, a parametric analysis and sensitivity analysis were carried out on the parameters such as width of bridge, span length, girder spacing, width of traffic lane, etc. Then, an equation of live load distribution factors was developed through the multiple linear regression analysis on the results of parametric analysis. When the actual practice engineers design a bridge with the equation of live load distribution factors developed here, they will determine the design of member forces ensuring the appropriate safety rate more easily. Moreover, in the preliminary design, this model is expected to save much time for the repetitive design to improve the structural efficiency of PSC I-girder bridges.

  • Roll forming process is one of the most widely used processes in the world for forming metals such as a furniture drawer guide or an up and down slide guide. It can manufacture goods of the uniform cross section on a large scale throughout the continuous processing. In the domestic design and manufacture, roll forming process for production is taking most of the method of 2-point under rail slide. However, this method is vulnerable to the structural strength and stiffness is not suitable for high load conditions. Therefore, through systematic study of high load, low noise 3-point ball type of under rail slide its own design and manufacturing technology is the need to build. In this paper, to make center member of 3-point ball-type under rail slide for the refrigerator doors, the roll forming modeling and simulation are performed. Tensile test is performed about SCP-1 1/2H for determine the mechanical properties of materials. Modeling and simulation of roll forming is used MSC.MARC software of a dedicated analysis program used by rigid plastic finite element method. Interference between the roll and the final shape are predicted from the results of the simulation.

  • This paper concerns the development of an optimized TBM segmental lining design system for a subsea tunnel. The subsea tunnel is normally laid down under the sea water and submarine ground which consists of soil or rock. The design system is the series of process which can predict segmental lining member forces by ANN (artificial neural network system), analyze suitable section for the designated ground, construction and tunnel conditions. Finally, this lining design system aims to be connected with a BIM system for designing the subsea tunnel automatically. The lining member forces are predicted based on the ANN which was calculated by a FEM (finite element analysis) and it helps designers determine its segmental lining dimension easily without any further FE calculations.

  • Durability is one of the most important and attractive subjects in concrete research field because not only durability of concrete is reduced by various degradation factors but also its reduction adversely influences the structural performance and service life of concrete structure. For this reason, a considerable amount of papers associated with concrete durability have been published and those researches were mainly focused on the changes of intrinsic properties of concrete due to chemicophysical degradations. However, the relationship between durability of concrete and structural behavior of concrete member has not been well established yet. In this study, calcium leaching degradation, a cause of concrete strength reduction, was dealt with. The experiments of compressive and flexural behavior of degraded concrete member were performed to evaluate the characteristics of structural behavior according to degradation level. Finally, the results from the experiments were compared with those obtained from nonlinear FEM analysis. The results from this study clearly showed that leaching degradation leads to decrease in compressive strength and compressive behavior evolves from brittle to ductile failure pattern during the degradation process. Load capacity and flexible rigidity of the degraded RC member decreased when the degradation level increased, in compressive zone. Additionally, it was found that the values from nonlinear FEM analysis, CDP model in ABAQUS, coincided well with the experimental results.

  • A transmission tower was designed according to general and special load cases based on KEPCO Design Specifications. The special load case such as unbalanced load a cording to some broken wires has not been considered significantly. Therefore, this paper presents investigations on the stability and safety of main post members subjected to unbalanced load and design wind load. In this study, all cases totally considered. From the finite element analyses using LUSAS program, the stresses on the tower subjected to unbalanced load and design wind load were very high in comparison to the allowable stresses of the steel post member that was used. Some of the post member had higher stresses than the yield stress of the steel member. This paper also shows an example to improve the capacity of the post members using increased cross-section members. Based on the analyses results, when investigating the safety of the transmission tower, one must consider thenew design philosophy including ultimate strength of the member and reliability of the special loading cases.
