The cold expansion method (CEM) is one of the widely used a method to improve the fatigue behavior of materials in aerospace industry. Such improvement is due to the compressive residual stress developed when a tapered mandrel goes through the fastener holes a little smaller than the mandrel. CEM is retarded of crack initiation due to the compressive residual stress developed on the hole surface. Many researchers are studied a finite element analysis of residual stress around fastener hole. But in case of real model, fastener hole has a clamping force after CE. Therefore, it is respected that residual stress distributions should be changed due to clamping forces. In this paper, it was performed finite element analysis of residual stress by clamping force after CE in the plate having adjacent holes. From this study, it has been found that compressive residual stress near the hole increases according to clamping force. Also, the more increase clamping force, the more increases compressive residual stress. However, tensile residual stress increase beyond clamping force area.
Cold expansion method is used to protect a fatigue fracture from fastener hole in the structure and aerospace industry. Cold expansion is that an oversized tapered mandrel goes through the hole and produces a compressive residual stress as well as plastic deformation around the hole. Here, mandrel shapes are one of the factors which are influenced on the residual stress distribution by cold expansion method. This paper, according to mandrel shapes (diameter of mandrel, length of mandrel and length of taper), we are performed a finite element analysis of residual stress distribution by cold expansion method. From this study, it has been found that diameter of mandrel and length of taper are an important factor which was generated a low compressive residual stress surround of fastener hole by cold expansion method.

Finite element method (FEM) is an effective quantitative method to solve complex engineering problems. The basic idea of FEM for a complex problem is to be able to find a solution by reducing the problem made simple. If mathematical tools are inadequate to obtain precise result, even approximate result, FEM is the only method that can be used for structural analyses. In FEM, the domain is divided into a large number of simple, small and interconnected sub-regions called finite elements. FEM has been used commonly for linear and nonlinear analyses of different types of structures to give us accurate results of plane stress and plane strain problems in civil engineering area. In this paper, FEM is used to investigate stress analysis of a shear wall which is subjected to concentrated loads and fundamental principles of stress analysis of the shear wall are presented by using matrix displacement method in this paper. This study is consisting of two parts. In the first part, the shear wall is discretized with constant strain triangular finite elements and stiffness matrix and load vector which is attained from external effects are calculated for each of finite elements using matrix displacement method. As to second part of the study, finite element analysis of the shear wall is made by ANSYS software program. Results obtained in the second part are presented with tables and graphics, also results of each part is compared with each other, so the performance of the matrix displacement method is demonstrated. The solutions obtained by using the proposed method show excellent agreements with the results of ANSYS. The results show that this method is effective and preferable for the stress analysis of shell structures. Further studies should be carried out to be able to prove the efficiency of the matrix displacement method on the solution of plane stress problems using different types of structures.
A numerical study for the number of terms of a power series stress function and the effect of hybrid element size on stress analysis around a hole in loaded orthotropic composites is presented. The hybrid method coupling experimental and/or theoretical inputs and complex variable formulations involving conformal mappings and analytical continuity is used to calculate tangential stress on the boundary of the hole in uniaxially loaded, finite width glass epoxy tensile plate. The tests are done by rarying the number of terms, element size and nodal locations on the external boundary of the hybrid region. The numerical results indicate that the hybrid method is accurate and powerful in both experimental and numerical stress analysis.
In this paper, the algorithm for the static analysis of an axisymmetric cylindrical shell by using the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method (FE-TSCM) is suggested. TE-TSCM combining both the modeling procedure of the finite element method (FEM) and the transfer procedure of the transfer stiffness coefficient method (TSCM) has the advantages of FEM and TSCM. After computational programs are made by both FE-TSCM and FEM for the stress analysis of the axisymmetric cylindrical shell, we compare the numerical results by FE-TSCM with those of FEM for two computational models in order to confirm the trust of FE-TSCM.

This paper attempt to explore the shape of stress wave propagation of 3-dimensional stress field which in made in the process of the time increment. A finite element program about 3-dimensional stress wave propagation is developed for investigating the changing shape of the stress by the impact load. The finite element program, which is the solution for the 3-dimensional stress wave analysis, based on Galerkin and Newmark-${\beta}$ method at time increment step. The tensile stress and compressive stress become larger with the order of the middle , the upper and the opposite layers when the impact load is applied. In a while the shear stress become larger according to the order of the upper, the middle and the opposite layers when impact load applied.
Finite element analysis is peformed about the crack propagation in half-space due to sliding contact. The analysis is based on linear elastic fracture mechanics and stress intensity factor concept. The crack location is fixed and the friction coefficient between asperity and half-space is varied to analyze the effect of surface friction on stress Intensity factor for horizontal crack. The crack propagation direction is predicted based on the maximum range of shear and tensile stress intensity factor.
As an improvement on the isoparametric element method, the derivation presented in this paper is close to that done by Wang (1990) for the 2-D finite element. We extend this idea to solve 3-D crack problems in this paper. A new displacement modelling is constructed with local solutions of three-dimensional cracks and a quasi-compatible isoparametric element for three-dimensional fracture mechanics analysis is presented. The stress intensity factors can be solved directly by means of the present method without any post-processing. A new method for calculating the stress intensity factors of three-dimensional cracks with complex geometries and loads is obtained. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the validity of the present method. The accuracy of the results obtained by the proposed element is demonstrated by solving several crack problems. The results illustrate that this method not only saves much calculating time but also increases the accuracy of solutions. Because this quasi-compatible finite element of 3-D cracks contains any singularities and easily meets the requirement of compatibility, it can be easily implemented and incorporated into existing finite element codes.
This paper has the object of investigating natural frequencies of tapered thick plate on pasternak foundation by means of finite element method and providing kinetic design data for mat of building structures. vibration analysis that tapered thick plate subjected to In-plane stress is presented in this paper Finite element analysis of rectangular plate is done by use of rectangular finite element with 8-nodes. In order to analysis tapered plate which is supported on pasternak foundation. The ratio of In-plane stress to critical load is varied with $0.2\sigma_{cr},\;0.4\sigma_{cr},\;0.6\sigma_{cr}$, and the Winkler parameter is 0, 10, 100, 1000 the shear foundation parameter 0, 10. The taper ratio is applied as 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 respectively. This paper is analyzed varying thickness by taper ratio with In-plane stress.
