Fine recycled-concrete aggregates(RCAs) instead of natural sand were tested for a foundation material under sewage conduit system, which was evaluated based on foundation settlement at various conditions. To obtain this applicability of RCAs, the settlement behavior was simulated with FLAC program based on the difference of material properties, and immediate settlement behaviors and the change of material properties under the simulated drainage conditions also tested at the various loading conditions in the laboratory. Finally, large-scale settlement test in the field was conducted to prove the above feasibilities. Subsequently, the amount of settlement from the FLAC simulation was calculated under $5.0{\times}10^{-6}\;m$ and the extent of settlement and property changes (porosity, permeability and waster absorption) was not noticeable from the laboratory experiments. Also, settlement monitoring from the field experiment showed the consistent results with laboratory experiments except for the consolidation settlement(=5 mm) of the round below the foundation. In summary, adopting fine RCAs as a foundation material for sewage conduit system was resonable based of geotechnical point of view.
The objective of this study is to investigate the properties of fresh concrete with recycled coarse and fine aggregates. Four different kinds of aggregate with natural, recycled aggregates were prepared. The concrete mixtures were produced with test parameters of replacement ratio of recycled aggregate. The properties of the fresh concrete were measured by means of slump and air content according to elapsed time. Quality control method to maintain the constant total mixing water for recycled aggregate concrete was suggested. The all concrete mixtures were produced with approximately the same slump on the job site after an hour. Test results indicated that compressive strength of concrete with constant slump is not affected by the replacement ratio of recycled aggregate. Also the practical way for the quality control of recycled aggregate concrete is to maintain the constant total mixing water.
This research study focuses on utilizing sandstone which is overburden waste rock in coal mines to use in concrete as a replacement of fine aggregate. Physical properties of sandstone like water absorption, moisture content, fineness modulus etc., were found to be similar to conventional fine aggregate. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis was carried out for analysing elemental composition of sandstone. There was no sulphur content in sandstone which is a good sign to carry the replacement. Fine aggregate was replaced with sandstone at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% by volume and moulds of concrete cubes and cylinders were prepared. Compressive strength of concrete cubes was tested after 3, 7 and 28 days and split tensile & flexural strength was determined after 28 days. The strength was found to be increasing marginally with increase in sandstone content. Fine aggregate that was replaced by 100% sandstone gave highest strength among all the replacements for the compressive, split tensile and flexural strengths. Though increase in strength was marginal, still sandstone can be an effective replacement for sand in order to save the natural resource and utilize the waste sandstone.

This study was carried out to find reliable relations between various concrete strength properties which are used as input data in concrete pavement design program. Concretes were made from different sources of coarse grained(granite, limestone and sandstone) and fine grained aggregates such as natural sand, washed sand and crushed sand. From strength test results, model equations were obtained based on the relation between strengths. For each coarse grained aggregate, models for compression-flexural strengths, compression-split tensile strengths, compressive strength-modulus and flexural-split tensile strengths with age were obtained. For concrete mixed with gneiss granite aggregates, concrete strengths were obtained from numerical mean values of concrete strengths mixed with fine grained aggregates. In addition models for concrete split tensile strengths and modulus values were provide by averaging numerically the estimated values obtained from the derived relationship and the experimental values. This is due to more scattered values of split tensile strengths and modulus values than other strength properties. Finally criteria for drying shrinkage strain as well as Poisson's ratio for concrete used in pavement were presented for all mixes with differed coarse grained aggregates.

The aim of this study is to investigate experimentally the effect of the combination of fine particle cement with high Blaine fineness (FC) and recycled aggregates on the engineering properties and micro structure of high volume blast furnace slag (BS) concrete with 75% BS and 21 MPa. FC manufactured by particle classification at the plant with Blaine fineness of more than $7000cm^2/g$ was used as additional alkali activator for high volume blast furnace slag concrete made with recycled fine and coarse aggregates. FC was replaced by 15, 20 and 25% OPC. Test results showed that the incorporation of FC resulted in an increase in the compressive strength compared to BS concrete without FC by as much as 30% due to accelerated hydration and associated latent hydraulic reaction. It was found that the use of FC and recycled aggregates played an important role in activating BS for high volume BS concrete by offering sufficient alkali.

Some of old fluvial sediments are originally composed of fine and silty-clay grains with sands or some of them have been segregated by weathering as a result of the influence of groundwater fluctuations. For this reason, some of old fluvial sediments are not suitable for using as fine aggregates. Furthermore, the old fluvial aggregates with comparatively good quality have been exploited for a long time and quality of most remainders have been significantly poor. Though many old fluvial aggregates do not satisfy the quality controls(QC) standards such as KS F2526 and KS F 2527, they must be utilized to various usage suitable far different quality categories. Thus, we try to make constant efforts to utilize aggregates of all qualities. This study shows that physical properties of old fluvial aggregates are both controlled by source rocks and also related to old fluvial environment.
Recently, there has been a remarkable trend of using aggregates at sizes smaller than 13 mm for drainage asphalt pavement (DAP) in order to reduce the noise generated between vehicle tires and road surface. These DAPs have their performance and durability seriously worsen after several years in-service due to the clogging of void space and the abrasion. This paper proposes the use of large size aggregates in porous asphalt mixtures to overcome these defects. Results of laboratory and field experiments on asphalt mixtures with several aggregate gradations are investigated and compared. The study focuses on advantages of DAP using large size aggregate and on particle size combinations containing no fine aggregates of size 2.36 mm or less, which have not been considered in current engineering practice.

This study deals with coal-mine waste (CMW) for use in concrete as a replacement of normal aggregates. The CMW was collected from Sabuk region. Ganwon-do. Fine and coarse aggregates from CMW were prepared by using a crusher and separating debris with #4 sieve. CMW aggregates showed good physical and mechanical properties with having specific gravity over 2.65, absorption less than 1%, and abrasion ratio below 20%. However, particle shape of CMW was poor because of non-isotropic nature of matrix which cause particles to be long or flat. Since irregular particles caused a poor workability, to make workability better, a 1/4 of coarse aggregate was replaced with normal aggregate together with a superplasticizer. Compressive strength and other mechanical properties of CMW concrete were very good. Color of the concrete was darker than normal concrete due to black color of CMW. In conclusion, characteristics of CMW concrete was acceptable for use as a structural concrete material.
Utilization of mine waste rocks and tailings in concrete as aggregates will help in sustainable and greener development. The literature shows the potential use of iron ore tailings as a replacement of natural fine aggregates. As natural sand reserves are depleting day by day, there is a need for substitution for sand in concrete. A comprehensive overview of the published literature on the use of iron ore waste and tailings and other industrial waste in concrete is being presented. The effect of various properties such as workability, compressive strength, split tensile strength, flexural strength, durability and microstructure of concrete have been presented in this paper.

As the ministry of construction and transportation established quality standards for recycled aggregate in August, 2005, the consumption of recycled aggregates is expected to be increased in construction fields in the future. Thus the relations between compressive strength of general concretes and that of recycled aggregate concretes which are applied to actual structures are attempted to investigate through non-destruction testing method. Presently Schmitt-Hammer test method is that concrete compressive strength is predicted by measuring surface hardness of concretes, and is well known as the most convenient and simply operated method among many non-destruction testing methods. In this study, cylinder specimen and mock-up were constructed using recycled aggregate concretes made by the first class recycled coarse aggregates and recycled fine aggregates specified in KS F 2573 (recycled aggregate for concrete), and compressive strength of hardened concrete of middle ages was evaluated.
