  • The cutoff frequency of a LC output filter for Dynamic Voltage Restorers (DVR) limits the control bandwidth of a DVR system while it attenuates the inverter switching ripples. For a selected cutoff frequency of a LC output filter, infinite number of L-C combinations is possible. Although different L-C combination has different filter characteristics, the filter design on L-C combination has been depended on field experiences without clear analysis. This paper proposes a design criterion and design examples for the L-C filter combination considering the control characteristics and the size of DVRs. An experimental DVR system based on the proposed LC output filter design methodology is built and tested.

  • This paper focuses on the $H_{\infty}$ filter design problem for offshore steel jacket platforms. Its objective is to design a full-order state observer for offshore platforms in presence of unknown disturbances. To make the method more practical, it is assumed that the measured variables are available at discrete-time instants with time-varying sampling time intervals. By modelling the sampling intervals as a bounded time-varying delay, the estimation error system is expressed as a time-delay system. As a result, the addressed problem can be transformed to the problem of stability of dynamic error between the system and the state estimator. Then, based on the Lyapunov-Krasovskii Functional (LKF), a stability criterion is obtained in the form of Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). According to the stability criterion, a sufficient condition on designing the state estimator gain is obtained. In the end, the proposed method is applied to an offshore platform to show its effectiveness.

  • Two-dimensional (2-D) digital filters are widely useful inn image processing and other 2-D digital signal processing fields, but designing 2-D filters is much more difficult than designing one-dimensional (1-D) ones. This paper provides a new insight into the existing singular value decomposition (SVD)-based design approach in the sense that the SVD-based design can be performed more efficiently by exploiting the symmetries of the given 2-D magnitude specifications. By using the specification symmetries. only half of the 1-D filters (sub-filters) need to be designed. which significantly simplifies the design process and reduces the computer storage required for 1-D sub-filter coefficients. Another novel point of this paper si that an objective criterion is proposed for selecting appropriate sub-filter orders in order to reduce the hardware implementation cost. A design example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the SVD-based design approach by exploiting specification symmetry and new order-selecting criterion.

  • An extended robust H$\infty$ filter is proposed for a nonlinear uncertain system. We also analyze the characteristics of the proposed filter such as an H$\infty$ performance criterion using the Lyapunov function method. The analysis results show that proposed filter has a robustness against disturbances such as process and measurement noises and against parameter uncertainties. Then the in-flight alignment for a strapdown inertial navigation system is designed using the presented filter. Simulation results show that the proposed filter effectively improve the performance.

  • A haptic interface can be a passive system with virtual coupling as a filter virtual coupling has been designed for satisfying passivity. However, it affects transparency of haptic interface as well as stability. This paper suggests new design criterion of a haptic interface controller by considering transparency. As a result, sampling time and the range of impedance or admittance should be considered as well as virtual coupling for desired performance of hapticdisplay. And experiments show that the suggested design criterion can be applied successfully for desired performance.

  • In this paper, we propose a design method of Active Noise Control (ANC) that reduces perceived level of the residual noise. A FELMS (Filtered-E Least Mean Squares) algorithm is used for the ANC system and the NC (noise criteria) is applied as an evaluation criterion of the residual noise. With this structure, we present the allowable spectral shape of the noise shaping filter that minimizes the NC index within the effective operating frequency band of the ANC, and showed that the filter satisfying in the criterion has a lower NC value than the psychoacoustic-based filter used in the previous studies.

  • The very purpose of subband codec is the attainment of data rate compression through the use of quantizer and optimum bit allocation for each decimated signal. Yet the question of floating-point quantization effects in subband codec has received scant attention. There has been no direct focus on the analysis of quantization errors, nor on design with quantization errors embedded explicitly in the criterion. This paper provides a rigorous theory for the modelling, analysis and optimum design of the general M-band subband codec in the presence of the floating-point quantization noise. The floating-point quantizers are embedded into the codec structure by its equivalent multiplicative noise model. We then decompose the analysis and synthesis subband filter banks of the codec into the polyphase form and construct an equivalent time-invariant structure to compute exact expression for the mean square quantization error in the reconstructed an equivalent time-invariant structure to compute exact expression for the mean square quantization error in the reconstructed output. The optimum design criteria of the subband codec is given to the design of the analysis/synthesis filter bank and the floating-point quantizer to minimize the output mean square error. Specific optimum design examples are developed with two types of filter of filter banks-orthonormal and biorthogonal filter bank, along with their perpormance analysis.

  • In this paper, we studied some design methodologies of typical FIR filters based on the peak-error constrained least square criterion which was first introducedd by Adams in 1991. This method is a mixed type of the classical least squared error method(LSM) and the so-called min-max error method (MMM). And by considering both the least squared error as well as the maximum error, the solution, i.e. the impulse response of the filter, can be found only when the restrictions on maximum gain, transition bandwidth, and the squared error are satisfied simultaneously under some trade-off conditions. We used the multiple exchange algorithms for optimization procedure and applied the design methodology to the cases of the multiband filter, the differentiator, and the Hilbert transformer by taking the balance of two design criteria into account. The results show that the peak-error constrained least weighted square error design method(PLEM) is superior in performance to the existing LSM and MMM from both the squared error and the maximum error standpoints. And it is verified that PLEM can be applied to not only the case of simple low pass filter, but also to various types of FIR filters.

  • This paper considers the problem of continuous and discrete time dissipative filter design method for the singular systems with polytopic uncertainties. Two bounded real lemmas (BRL) for the robust filters of dissipative singular systems along with the polytopic uncertainties are proposed on the basis of Lyapunov criterion. The sufficient conditions for both continuous and discrete time dissipative filter design methods are derived using the obtained BRL by linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. Finally, the validities of the proposed methods are shown by numerical examples.
