Globalization has been the buzzword during the past couple of decades, embroiling humankind into the inescapable maelstrom of homogenization. Some critics identify the globalization process undergoing in the realms of politics, economy, culture and ecology with Americanization which entails Neoconservatives' scheme to stretch out the hegemony of the United States. The top-down transcontinental movement, however, deems to confront localization or a reasoned resistance from the local driven by the spiritual attachment to places and, in that sense, regional identity. What is needed to cope with this complex circumstance of glocalization is to be acquainted with beth the global sense of the local and the localized sense of the global at once. For this, it seems indispensible to do justice to area studies. As far as American studies are concerned, this research field has so far been tainted by an overdose of politics, economics, business administration, law and sociology. Regional analysis which constitutes the reason d'etre of the discipline of geography has remained marginal to the political economic mainstream. It is the mounting concerns about America and enhanced research caliber that raises the regional geographical studies of America on the right track. Particularly, a number of articles have been published since the mid-1990s owing to the combined efforts of practitioners, institutions and periodicals. It is expected that systematic training of new generation of American specialists, advance in research infrastructure, and generous funding will stimulate geographical investigation of America in the coming future.
This study investigates speech perception in noise (SPIN) in Korean. A new type of Korean SPIN test was developed by adopting a similar format to the English SPIN test. The predictability effects, noise effects and their interactions were examined in order to verify the previous findings based on English. The data from 14 Korean adults collected with this new type of Korean SPIN test confirmed the previous findings: first, the participants' overall performance was better in low noise conditions than in high noise conditions. Secondly, there was a tendency for highly predictable words to be more accurately perceived than less predictable words especially in high noise conditions. The results were interpreted in such a way that the listeners actively used both types of information: acoustic information and contextual information in speech perception. When the acoustic property of the speech sound was degraded with noise, the listeners took advantage of the linguistic contextual information in their processing of the speech sound. The findings of this study conform to those of the previous studies based on the English SPIN test. In addition, a possible effect of the frequency of target word was also found, calling for further investigation in this field of research in Korean. Implications of the results were also discussed. The paper addresses contribution to the modeling and optimization of major machinability parameters (cutting force, surface roughness, and tool wear) in finish dry hard turning (FDHT) for machinability evaluation of hardened AISI grade die steel D3 with PVD-TiN coated (Al2O3-TiCN) mixed ceramic tool insert. The turning trials are performed based on Taguchi's L18 orthogonal array design of experiments for the development of regression model as well as adequate model prediction by considering tool approach angle, nose radius, cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut as major machining parameters. The models or correlations are developed by employing multiple regression analysis (MRA). In addition, statistical technique (response surface methodology) followed by computational approaches (genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization) have been employed for multiple response optimization. Thereafter, the effectiveness of proposed three (RSM, GA, PSO) optimization techniques are evaluated by confirmation test and subsequently the best optimization results have been used for estimation of energy consumption which includes savings of carbon footprint towards green machining and for tool life estimation followed by cost analysis to justify the economic feasibility of PVD-TiN coated Al2O3+TiCN mixed ceramic tool in FDHT operation. Finally, estimation of energy savings, economic analysis, and sustainability assessment are performed by employing carbon footprint analysis, Gilbert approach, and Pugh matrix, respectively. Novelty aspects, the present work: (i) contributes to practical industrial application of finish hard turning for the shaft and die makers to select the optimum cutting conditions in a range of hardness of 45-60 HRC, (ii) demonstrates the replacement of expensive, time-consuming conventional cylindrical grinding process and proposes the alternative of costlier CBN tool by utilizing ceramic tool in hard turning processes considering technological, economical and ecological aspects, which are helpful and efficient from industrial point of view, (iii) provides environment friendliness, cleaner production for machining of hardened steels, (iv) helps to improve the desirable machinability characteristics, and (v) serves as a knowledge for the development of a common language for sustainable manufacturing in both research field and industrial practice.

Developing good methods for image description and indexing is fundamental for successful image retrieval, regardless of the content of images. Researchers and practitioners in the field of image indexing have developed a variety of image indexing systems and methods with the consideration of information types delivered by images. Such efforts in developing image indexing systems and methods include Panofsky's levels of image indexing and indexing systems adopting different approaches such as thesauri-based approach, classification approach. description element-based approach, and categorization approach. This study investigated users' perception of the objectiveness of image indexing, especially the iconographical analysis of image information advocated by Panofsky. One of the best examples of subjectiveness and conditional-dependence of image information is emotion. As a result, this study dealt with visual emotional information. Experiments were conducted in two phases : one was to measure the degree of agreement or disagreement about the emotional content of pictures among forty-eight participants and the other was to examine the inter-rater consistency defined as the degree of users' agreement on indexing. The results showed that the experiment participants made fairly subjective interpretation when they were viewing pictures. It was also found that the subjective interpretation made by the participants resulted from the individual differences in terms of their educational or cultural background. The study results emphasize the importance of developing new ways of indexing and/or searching for images, which can alleviate the limitations of access to images due to the subjective interpretation made by different users.

A RF environmental field test for the proposed Galileo Sensor Station site was done by Alcatel Alenia technical team contracted by European Space Agency (ESA) and the Space Geodesy division of Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute at the Korean VLBI Hetwork (KVN) site in Tamla University Campus, Jeju from June 21, 2007 to June 24, 2007. Full band and in-band 24 hour observation for radio frequency interference, precise positioning, and multipath on three proposed antenna locations for Galileo signal were executed. The main purpose of this survey is to verify the results of previous test on 2006 by KASI. The preliminary analysis of the results and a full investigation also had been done by ESA under the permission of KASI until the end of July, 2007.
The NE Asiatic Solidago virgaurea complex in Korea has been reported on 5 taxa (S. virgaurea subsp. asiatica, S. virgaurea var. taquetii, S. virgaurea var. coreana, S. virgaurea subsp. leiocarpa, and S. virgaurea subsp. gigantea). However, the broad morphological variations and a lack of diagnostic characteristics have made it difficult to distinguish these taxa and have thus resulted in a complicated taxonomy in the complex. Therefore, to clarify the classification and delimitation of each taxon, the morphological characteristics of the S. virgaurea complex were investigated by examining the original descriptions and type specimens. Field work was also conducted to investigate the morphological and geographic features. In conclusion, S. japonica Kitam., as a legitimate name, was distributed all over the country except for the Is. Ulleung-do in Korea, as distinguished from S. virgaurea L. Both S. virgaurea var. taquetii and S. virgaurea var. coreana were considered as synonyms of S. japonica, as their morphological characteristics were within the variation range of those of S. japonica. Furthermore, S. virgaurea subsp. leiocarpa does not occur in Korea. Additional investigations are required to clarify the classification of S. virgaurea subsp. gigantea, whose populations were not found during the investigation in this study. S. dahurica, meanwhile, was distributed in the northern part of North Korea.
The current rural conditions are undergoing the change from the past production-intensive structure to an integral and complex one of producing, processing, selling, touring and lodging owing to the changes of life-style, consumption trend and social environments. The rural area is developing into a community of rural tourism villages to grow into one management system along with the assistance of the government's various supporting projects. Through this, the rural designing has got to play a significant role as one of the factors of the enhancement of competitiveness and the increase of income. Therefore, those previous studies on the variety and possibility of rural development are being employed for the researches which are to develop techniques of branding, marketing and packaging. In particular, the researches for VI (Village Identity), BI (Brand Identity) and designs of landscaping, packaging of agricultural specialties and display stores, which definitely shows that the importance of rural designing, is being paid a lot more attention to. Thus, this study has verified the site commercialization and its effect by developing some practical designing with the focus of package design at rural tourism villages. The Okgye Village in Yoncheon was selected for study subject based on the result of status investigation. This study has analyzed such problems as lack of village identity, non-description of items and their indispensible marks which were seen their designs of village and packaging. The colors of major items and the village image being substituted into the image scale of IRI color were estimated so that the appropriate colors might be selected, along with which the shapes of major items were decided to be motif for the village symbol and design to be created. The designs of such major items as grains, greens and sauces were created with the consideration of the easiness of loading, the continuity of using and the aesthetics. For grains, those outer boxes which are possible for set-packaging and small-sized packaging have been developed. For greens were developed the boxes with the structure of the permeability for the persisten't quality as well as the possibility for packaging small amount. In case of sauces, those outer-boxes equipped with fixing tray were made with the transport-convenience taken into consideration. The sticker-label designs for all those three were also developed which stand for the village identity and are conveniently used in each farm family. When this development was applied at the sites, it was found that the satisfaction and reliability of consumers as well as the satisfaction of farmers were raised along with the increase by more than 30% after the improvement.
The court in Korea values evidence justice, and also demands justification for the process of collecting evidence. Therefore, it is necessary to raise the level of organizational commitment, which means that the police investigators performing these tasks feel attached to the police organization they belong to, and that they feel united about the goals of the organization. Based on this recognition, the study analyzed the effects of the police's perception of organizational Justice on organizational commitment, and classified organizational Justice into distributive Justice, procedure Justice and interaction Justice. Therefore, this study analyzes the effect of the police's perception of organizational Justice on organizational commitment and verifies the effect through multiple regression analysis by injecting the trust of Supervisors into a mediating variable. The study was also conducted on the assumption that the trust of Supervisors is important in carrying out the field investigators work in the South Korean police. To achieve the purpose of this research, a total of three surveys were conducted from May 2017 to October 2019 at the National Police Agency using the selection process of investigators and job training courses for the national police, and a total of 500 copies were used as analysis data. Looking at the results analysis of this study, first, it was found that there was a statistically significant static (+) effect on organizational commitment, where the organizational Justice of police officers was a independent variable. Second, the relationship between organizational Justice and organizational commitment has shown that the trust of Supervisors has a mediating effect in korean police organization.
This study was aimed to quantify the amount of carbon dioxide emissions and to suggest suitable plans which consider the carbon emission reduction in the manufacturing process of the domestic structural glued laminated timber. Field investigation on two glued laminated timber manufacturers was conducted to find out material flow input values such as raw materials, transportation, manufacturing process, and energy consumption during manufacturing process. Based on the collected data and the relevant literatures about life cycle inventory (LCI), the amount of carbon dioxide emission per unit volume was quantified. Results show that the carbon dioxide emissions for sawing, drying and laminating process are 31.0, 109.0, 94.2 kg $CO_2eq./m^3$, respectively. These results show 13% lesser amount of total carbon dioxide emissions compared with the imported glued laminated timber in Korea. Furthermore, it was decreased about 37% when the fossil fuel would be replaced with biomass fuel in drying process. Findings from this study is effectively used as the basic data on the life cycle assessment of wooden building.
The investigation was conducted to find out amounts and ratios of N, P and K fertilizers applied on summer Chinese cabbage in 58 farmers' fields of highland area. The application levels of N, $P_2O_5$, $K_2O$, livestock manure and lime fertilizers were 444, 188, 390, 9,920 and $2,160kg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively, for summer Chinese cabbage. The ratios of basal dressing were 48% in N, 46.6% in $K_2O$. The frequencies of top dressing both N and K were 1.7 times. The kinds of compound fertilizers were in the order of 11-10-10+3+0.3 > 11-6-6+4+13+17 > 12-9-11+3+0.3 in basal application and 18-0-18+0.3 > 13-0-13+1+0.3 > 18-0-15+0.3 in top dressing. From the surveyed results, we could estimate that total 4,347 tons of N, $P_2O_5$, and $K_2O$ fertilizers were over used for summer Chinese cabbage by farmers in highland.
