As the cycling time of new products have become more and more short in recent years, the demand for lowering the cost and reducing the production time becomes stronger. In order for the demand, the rapid prototyping and rapid tooling technology have been used. It has been widely known that RP technology has advantages with fabricating 3-D object having a complicated geometric shape. RP products, however, have a limitation with applying to the real die and mold because soft materials such as resin, paper and wax has been mostly used in RP technology. So in this paper, the RP products have been copied to semi-metallic soft tools using the mixture of metal fillers and epoxy resin. In order to evaluate the effect of the fillers on the characteristics of semi-metallic soft tools, three fillers are used including commercial aluminum powder, cast iron powder recycled by machining chips, and aluminum short fiber made by self-excited vibration technique. Besides, in the case of aluminum powder, the change of characteristics of semi-metallic soft tools is also tested according to the volume fraction of the powder.

In this paper, manufacturing processes of cylindrical composite lattice structures using filament winding method was described. Cylindrical composite lattice structures were manufactured in accordance with four major steps. Silicon mold of lattice shape was installed on mandrel and then continuous fiber was wound on silicon mold. After winding process, in order to ensure the same thickness for all regions, compression process was done for its intersection parts. Finally, the composite lattice structure was demoulded after curing in oven. It was found that the manufactured cylindrical composites lattice structure had 2.4% of dimensional error compared to the design requirements.
Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is applied as structural material. CFRP is excellent in plane strength / stiffness and don't haves rust. Lightweight, rigid and robust at the same time as transportation material. Aluminum alloy and reinforcement material The application is increasing rapidly. In this study, the prototype of a semi - Monocoque structure frame, Longeron, Stringer, Skin of the aircraft, restraining the rigidity Clips of the aircraft was designated as the target product and the experiment was conducted. ln the experiment, (1) For CFRTP 3 points, data on heating, transfer, and cooling were measured using Thermo Couple, and optimum temperature required for flexible state was obtained. Heating was performed at a temperature 15% higher than the provided temperature. (2) By using a pneumatic press during molding, by dividing LH, center and RH according to the cooling time, thickness parameter of the target product due to the load is measured, and thickness control and time-deviations were analyzed and cross sections were observed with a low magnification microscope.

In resin transfer molding (RTM) process, preplaced fiber mat is set up in a mold and thermoset resin is injected into the mold. An important interest in RTM process is to minimize cycle time without sacrificing part quality or increasing cost. In this study, the numerical simulation and optimization process in filling stage were conducted in order to determine the optimum gate locations. Control volume finite element method (CVFEM) was used in this numerical analysis with the coordinate transformation method to analyze the complex 3-dimensional structure. Experiments were performed to monitor the flow front to validate simulation results. The results of numerical simulation predicted well the experimental results with every single, simultaneous and sequential injection procedure. We performed the optimization analysis for the sequential injection procedure to minimize fill time. The complex geometry of an automobile bumper core was chosen. Genetic algorithm was used in order to determine the optimum gate locations with regard to 3-step sequential injection case. These results could provide the information of the optimum gate locations in each injection step and could predict fill time and flow front.
Hollow steel-reinforced concrete-filled GFRP tubular member is a new kind of composite members. Firstly set the mold in the GFRP tube (non-bearing component), then set the longitudinal reinforcements with stirrups (steel reinforcement cage) between the GFRP tube and the mold, and filled the concrete between them. Through the axial compression test of the hollow steel-reinforced concrete-filled GFRP tubular member, the working mechanism and failure modes of composite members were obtained. Based on the experiment, when the load reached the ranges of $55-70%P_u$ ($P_u-ultimate$ load), white cracks appeared on the surface of the GFRP tubes of specimens. At that time, the confinement effects of the GFRP tubes on core concrete were obvious. Keep loading, the ranges of white cracks were expanding, and the confinement effects increased proportionally. In addition, the damages of specimens, which were accompanied with great noise, were marked by fiber breaking and resin cracking on the surface of GFRP tubes, also accompanied with concrete crushing. The bearing capacity of the axially compressed components increased with the increase of reinforcement ratio, and decreased with the increase of hollow ratio. When the reinforcement ratio was increased from 0 to 4.30%, the bearing capacity was increased by about 23%. When the diameter of hollow part was decreased from 55mm to 0, the bearing capacity was increased by about 32%.

Environment-friendly shock-absorbing (cushioning) materials were made using a vacuum forming method from waste wood collected from local mountains in Korea. The waste wood was pulped by thermomechanical pulping. The TMP cushions showed superior shock-absorbing properties with lower elastic moduli compared to EPS(Expanded Polystyrene) and pulp mold. Even though the TMP cushions made using at different suction times had many free voids in their inner fiber structures, their apparent densities were a little higher than EPS and much lower than pulp mold. The addition of cationic starch improved elastic modulus of the TMP cushions without increasing the apparent density, which was different from surface sizing with starch. The porosity of the TMP cushions was a little greater than EPS and much less than pulp mold. Finally, the TMP cushions have great potential to endure external impacts occurring during goods distribution.
In the vacuum assisted RTM (VARTM) process that has become the center of attention for manufacturing massive composite structures, a good evacuation of air in the fiber preform is recognized as the prime factor. The microvoids, or the dry spots, are formed as a result of improper gate/vent locations and the mold geometry. The non-uniform resin velocity at the flow front leads to the formation of microvoids in the fibers, whereas the air in the microvoids can migrate along with the resin flow during mold filling. The residual air in the internal voids of a composite structure may cause a degradation of the mechanical properties as well as the structural failure. In this study, a unified macro- and micro analysis methods were developed to investigate the formation and transport of air in resin during VARTM process. A numerical simulation program was developed to analyze the three-dimensional flow pattern as well as the macro- and microscopic distribution of air in a composite part fabricated by VARTM process.
During the compression molding process of the continuous fiber-reinforced polymeric composites, two main problems such as fiber-matrix separation and fiber orientation are produced by the difference of flow velocity. Molded parts are lead to be nonhomogeneous and anisotropic. As the mechanical property of the products are dependent on the separation and orientation, it is important to research the fiber mat structure and molding condition. If the fiber mat structure is changed by the increment of needling, the separation decreases and after compression molding the orientation is easily aligned. As it were, the compression moldability is good. But the defects as tears, thin thickness are produced in the products. Therefore, it is important to clarify the moldability in relation to the usage of products and the expenses of produce on the actual process. Therefore we must make the measurement methods that can define the moldability of products. In this research, the effects of the fiber mat structure(NP = 0, 5, 10, 25, 50 punches/$cm^2$) and the mold geometry($r_p$ = 1, 25, 50 mm) on the moldability of products were discussed. We investigated the case of one-dimensional flow in order to obtain the degree of nonhomogeneity and the fiber orientation function. In result, we could gain the correlation coefficient of the continuous fiber-reinforced polymeric composites. Also we experimented on the cup-type compression molding which was appeared the wrinkle on the flange part by the complex stress condition in order to gain the degree of nonhomogeneity and area ratio. In result, the moldability of products was expressed as the correlation coefficient and area ratio.

Disposable diaper waste is consisted of plastic, fiber, and SAP (Super Absorbent Polymer). They are valuable to be used as raw materials of other products including plastic blocks and pulp mold. Nevertheless, disposable diaper waste have been disposed by landfill and incineration without recycling. Due to strict environmental regulations it is necessary to develop fractionation technique to recycle the disposable diaper waste. In this study the fractionation technique using pilot-scale stock preparation units was investigated. Process for separation of plastic and fibers from disposable diaper waste was composed by the combination of pilot-scale pulper, drum screen, screen and cleaner. Recovery rate of plastics and fiber was checked according to the various operating conditions. In drum screen, recovery rate of plastic was high when the cut size of disposable diaper waste was $5cm{\times}5cm$. The highest recovery rate of fiber was achieved with 0.3 mm slot screen. It is important to control the neutral state of SAP for improvement of recovery rate of fiber since SAP can be swelled easily in water. Therefore SAP can be controlled efficiently by the addition of calcium chloride into the pulper. Consequently recovery rates of plastics and fibers were over 90 and 80% under the optimum pilot operating conditions.
Small diameter composite helical springs (CS) are developed using a hot plated mold for reinforcement of common optical fiber jumper cord (OJC). The outer diameters of the springs are about 2 ~ 3mm. These springs are inserted into the OJC to protect the damage of an optical fiber from the sudden lateral load. Two types of CS, Yarn type (Y-type) and Band type (B-type), are manufactured to compare the effectiveness for the damage protection. The experimental works were conducted to check the effect of the CS covered around OJC on the mechanical and optical properties. Experimental observations show a considerable effect on the flexural resistance, hence slowing down the deterioration of the optical power by the internal damage of the fiber. Obtained main results are as follows: (1) Y-type CS has better protection abilities to lateral loading than B-types. (2) Compared with bare OJC, CS-OJC has less power loss under the loading. (3) OJC covered with the composite coil spring has a possibility for a practical usage with full fruits.
