  • The pseudo dynamic test has been carried out so as to investigate the seismic performance of RC bridge piers strengthened with and without glass fiber sheets. The Lessons from severe demage of many infrastructures in Kobe(1995) and Northridge(1996) earthquakes have emphasized the need to develop the retrofit measures to enhance flexural strength, ductility and shear strength of RC bridge piers nonseismically designed before 1992. Therefore, the objective of this experimental research is to investigate the seismic behavior of circular reinforced concrete bridge piers by the pseudo dynamic test. and then to enhance the ductility of concrete piers strengthening with glass fiber sheets in the plastic hinge region. 7 circular RC bridge piers were made in a 1/3.4 scale. Important test parameters are confinement steel ratio, retrofitting. load pattern, etc. The seismic behavior of circular concrete piers under artificial ground motions has been evaluated through strength and stiffness degradation, energy dissipation. It can be concluded that existing bridge piers wrapped with glass fibers in the plastic hinge regions could have enough seismic performance.

  • Lap splices of longitudinal reinforcement steels were practically located in the potential plastic hinge region of most bridge columns that were constructed before the 1992 seismic design provision of Roadway Bridge Design Specification in Korea. The objective of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of shear-critical reinforced concrete(RC) bridge piers with poor detailing of the starter bars in the plastic hinge region, and to develop the enhancement scheme of their seismic capacity by retrofitting with fiber composites. Seven test specimens in the aspect ratio of 2.5 were made with three confinement ratios and two types of lap splices. Quasi-static test was conducted in a displacement-controlled test mode. A significant reduction of displacement ductility ratios were observed for test columns with lap splices of longitudinal steels.

  • As internal and external seismic experiment results, the seismic performance of RC bridge piers is largely dependent on the ratio of lap-spliced bars to all longitudinal reinforcing bars in plastic hinge regions, and confining effects of transverse reinforcements. Capacity and displacement ductility of non-seismically designed existing RC piers are reduced by lap splices in plastic hinge regions. The provision for the lap splice of longitudinal reinforcing bars was not specified in KBDS (Korean Bridge Design Specifications) before the implementation of 1992 seismic design code, but the ratio of lap-spliced bars to all longitudinal reinforcing bars in plastic hinge regions is restricted to 50% in the 2005 version of KBDS. This paper presents a seismic assessment of RC piers at lap-splicing ratios of 0%, 50%, and 100%. Through a comparison of experimental and analytic results of RC piers, we introduce an appropriate ultimate strain of confined concrete in plastic hinge regions with lap-splices, and propose a method for estimating displacement ductility ratios of non-seismically designed existing RC piers using fiber element analysis.

  • In the recent years, rehabilitation of structures, strengthening and increasing the ductility of them under seismic loads have become so vital that many studies has been carried out on the retrofit of steel and concrete members so far. Bridge piers are very important members concerning rehabilitation, in which the plastic hinging zone is very vulnerable. Pier is usually confined by special stirrups predicted in the design procedure; moreover, fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) jackets are used after construction to confine the pier. FRP wrapping of the piers is one of the most effective ways of increasing moment and ductility capacity of them, which has a growing application due to its relative advantages. In many earthquake-resistant bridges, reinforced concrete columns have a major defect which could be retrofitted in different ways like using FRP. After rehabilitation, it is important to check the strengthening adequacy by dynamic nonlinear analysis and precise modeling of material properties. If the plastic hinge properties are simplified for the strengthened members, as the simplified properties which FEMA 356 proposes for non-strengthened members, static nonlinear analysis could be performed more easily. Current paper involves this matter and it is intended to determine the plastic hinge properties for static nonlinear analysis of the FRP-strengthened circular columns.

  • In the present study, nonlinear earthquake analysis was carried out for a steel girder bridge that had been damaged by the 1995 Kobe earthquake. For such analysis, the use of hysteretic models describing flexure-axial and shear-axial interaction was suggested. The models were incorporated into a structural analysis program in terms of the joint elements representing hinge models, and then a simplified analysis scheme using the hinge models was employed for bridge piers. The analytical predictions of the flexure-axial interactive hinge model show a good correlation with those of the detailed fiber element model. In addition, the analytical predictions of the flexure-shear-axial interactive hinge model enable a displacement component to be separately captured. It is thus recognized that the present study can be a useful scheme for the healthy evaluation of the global displacement performance of piers subjected to earthquake excitation.

  • This paper presents a study on the flexural stiffness, plastic hinge length and plastic hinge rotation capacity of reinforced high performance concrete beams. 15 beams with different strength of concrete, reinforcement ratio and the pattern of loadings were tested. From the test results of reinforced normal strength concrete beams and reinforced high performance concrete beams with the concrete which has cylinder compressive strength of 700kg/${cm}^2$, slump value of 20~25cm and slump-flow value of 60~70cm. It is found that an extreme fiber concrete compressive strain of ${\varepsilon}_{cu}=0.0047$ may be used in ultimate curvature computations of reinforced high performance concrete beams. An empirical equation is proposed to estimate the effective moment of inertia. length and rotation capacity of plastic hinge of simply supported reinforced high performance concrete beams. The estimated deflections using this equation agree well with the experimental values.

  • This research aims at evaluating the seismic performance of the existing R/C bridge piers which were nonseismically or seismically designed in accordance with the provision of Korea Highway Design Specification. Further experimental investigations have been doing to figure out the retrofitting effects of nonseismic R/C bridge piers confined with glass fiber at the plastic hinge zone. Pseudo-dynamic tests have been carried out on nine scaled R/C column specimens to investigate their hysteretic behavior under earthquake loading, Test parameters are axial load input ground motion confinement steel ration glass fiber and etc,

  • An attempt was made to develop commercially pure titanium frames of glasses with a high-precision laser beam welding machine, in which a resonator with 12kw of the peak power and 200 W of maximum mean power has the capacity of variable in the range of 0.08~10 ms pulse width. In addition the optical fiber beam transmission with 400 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of the core diameter and a weld chamber to contain specimens in the inert gas atmosphere were also designed and used. In the present study. titanium frames of glasses parts such as temple plus spring hinge. bridge and top bar were experimentally manufactured by utilizing the optimum welding parameters with the optical fiber of GI 400 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 2.9J energy per pulse, and focussing position for Tee and butt joints. The titanium welded joints with laser beam welding did not reveal any severe weld defects or weld bead appearance except some pores in the weld section.

  • Environmental issues are attracting increasing interest worldwide, and accordingly, environmental regulations for vehicles are being made more stringent. As a result, the car industry is conducting studies focusing on fuel efficiency and lightweight vehicles. To manufacture lightweight vehicles, existing steel parts are replaced by composite materials and lightweight metals. In this study, the fatigue life of a new material for manufacturing lightweight car door hinges was predicted using a finite-element analysis program. The existing steel material was replaced by carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and aluminum alloy 6061, and the test results were analyzed. The maximum stress decreased by approximately three times, whereas the fatigue life and safety factor increased. When only CFRP was used, its allowable stress, safety factor, and fatigue life were excellent, but the sagging of the product exceeded the allowable value, which posed a limitation in use. Therefore, it seems desirable to use an appropriate combination of steel, AA6061, and CFRP for this product.
