  • In this paper, we propose ultra-fast multimedia optical subscriber access network using optical frequency domain CDMA method in order to access the multimedia with multiple data rates. We numerically analyze the effects of spectral power distortion in the light source for the optical CDMA system modified PN codes and FBG(Fiber Bragg Grating)s. In the proposed multiple-rate multimedia access optical networks, the performances such as BER(Bit Error Rate) are the same for all data regardless of data rates in the case of the same number of simultaneous ONU. In the proposed ultra-fast multimedia optical subscriber access network, the performances for all data are much more improved than those in the conventional system.

  • A metal-coated FBG (fiber Bragg grating) sensor has a memory effect, which can recall the maximum strains experienced by the structure. In this study, a nickel-coated FBG sensor was fabricated through electroless (i.e., chemical plating) and electroplating. A thickness of approximately $43{\mu}m$ of a nickel layer was achieved. Then, we conducted cyclic loading tests for the fabricated nickel-coated FBG sensors to verify their capability to produce residual strains. The results revealed that the residual strain induced by the nickel coating linearly increased with an increase in the maximum strain experienced by the sensor. Therefore, we verified that a nickel-coated FBG sensor has a memory effect. The fabrication methods and the results of the cycle loading test will provide basic information and guidelines in the design of a nickel-coated FBG sensor when it is applied in the development of structural health monitoring techniques.

  • In the using of FBG developed in home land, we designed and manufactured three types of FBG sound transducers the first in Korea. On FBG transducers manufactured we made an demonstrated on respective frequency response peculiarties in the water and analyzed the special characters. As the experimental result on frequency response peculiarities, we made t possible underwater acoustic detection on C type to maximum 18kHz, And for the purpose of realization on multi-point signal detection on wide scope in the water, in the using of WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) method and passive band-pass filter system, established arrays system and succeeded in multi-point underwater acoustic signal detection to the frequency 1.3KHz out of the two B type FBG transducers. Additionally, it would be possible directivity detection for the objects of its source as the intensity of detection signal varies with the sound source's direction and angle. From now on we prepared a new moment on the practical used study on FBG hydrophone.

  • The objective of this study is to improve the survivability and reliability of the FBG sensor network in the structural health monitoring (SHM) system. Therefore, a model reconstruction soft computing recognition algorithm based on support vector regression (SVR) is proposed to achieve the high reliability of the FBG sensor network, and the grid search algorithm is used to optimize the parameters of SVR model. Furthermore, in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model reconstruction algorithm, a SHM system based on an eight-point fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor network is designed to monitor the foreign-object low velocity impact of a CFRP composite plate. Simultaneously, some sensors data are neglected to simulate different kinds of FBG sensor network failure modes, the predicting results are compared with non-reconstruction for the same failure mode. The comparative results indicate that the performance of the model reconstruction recognition algorithm based on SVR has more excellence than that of non-reconstruction, and the model reconstruction algorithm almost keeps the consistent predicting accuracy when no sensor, one sensor and two sensors are invalid in the FBG sensor network, thus the reliability is improved when there are FBG sensors are invalid in the structural health monitoring system.

  • In this study, two kinds of smart accelerometers are investigated for the application of smart sensors to the structural health monitoring of infrastructures. Smart optical Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) type and Micro-Electo-Mechanical System (MEMS) type accelerometers are selected for this study and the high sensitive ICP type accelerometer is used for the reference sensor. Small size shaking table tests were performed with 3-story shear building model using random input ground motions. The output only modal identification was carried out using stochastic subspace identification and the performances of sensors are compared in modal domain indirectly. The modal sensitivity method was applied to update the story stiffness of numerical model and the updated results were verified using the additional experiments for the same structure with additional mass.

  • Generally, estimations on the displacement as an important factor in evaluating the safety of large structures could be a barometer assessing whether the condition of the structure is deteriorating. Practically, it is not easy how to measure the displacement response to large structures like suspension bridges. In this study, as a method for estimation displacement response from strain signals, mode decomposition technique is proposed. Total displacement response is estimated by superposing quasistatic displacement response and modal displacement responses in dominant modes with larger contributions after estimating the modal displacement responses. If foiled strain gauges are used to measure strain signals, there would likely to generate electric noise, what's more, the more measuring points there are the more economic burden it could be. In order to solve such problems, fiber optic bragg-grating(FBG) sensors were used, which have multi-point measurements with no effect on electric noises. Therefore, the experiment was performed through dynamic load test of suspension bridge and plate-girder bridge to review the possibility for using mode decomposition technique.

  • Recently, as the thickness of the semiconductor package becomes thinner, warpage has become a major issue. Since the warpage is caused by differences in material properties between package components, it is essential to precisely evaluate the material properties of the EMC(Epoxy molding compound), one of the main components, to predict the warpage accurately. Especially, the cure shrinkage of the EMC is generated during the curing process, and among them, the effective cure shrinkage that occurs after the gelation point is a key factor in warpage. In this study, the gelation point of the EMC was defined from the dissipation factor measured using the dielectric sensor during the curing process similar with actual semiconductor package. In addition, DSC (Differential scanning calorimetry) test and rheometer test were conducted to analyze the dielectrometry measurement. As a result, the dielectrometry was verified to be an effective method for monitoring the curing status of the EMC. Simultaneously, the strain transition of the EMC during the curing process was measured using the FBG (Fiber Bragg grating) sensor. From these results, the effective cure shrinkage of the EMC during the curing process was measured.

  • To substitute TLS in the hybrid system which is combined with Sagnac interferometer and fiber bragg grating (FBG) it is necessary to investigate how the laser source (TLS and CW) and sensor material variate the response of fiber optic sensor. Two different hollow cylinder type mandrel materials are proposed which are PTFE and PTFE+carbon and 18 m optical fiber is wounded at the mandrel surface. CW laser source experiments had been done in the oil tank which is filled with transformer oil in the 1 kHz~20 kHz frequency range. Also Sagnac interferometer fiber optic sensor is combined with FBG called hybrid system and TLS used as a light source. Based on the experimental results PTFE sensor showed more higher magnitude of detection signal rather than carbon sensor and this result is agreement with the McMahon's theoretical results. Phase variation is inversely proportional to the elastic modulus of the mandrel material. In PTFE fiber sensor, tunable laser source showed more higher performance rather than CW case. Therefore, TLS fiber optic sensor can be applied to the hybrid system which is combined with Sagnac and FBG.

  • In this paper, a tunable fiber feedback laser based on the use of Sagnac loop filter and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed. The Sagnac loop filter using a high birefringence fiber provides precise 0.33-nm channel spacing as a multi-wavelength grid filter. Ni-Cr wire wound on the FBG is useful to induce the thermo-optic effect of the fiber. Two types of FBG structures, which have a different length of wire, are demonstrated to show the wavelength shift and separation. To tune FBG by resistant heat, some current is supplied into the wire. When the wavelength matched with one of the cavity modes of Sagnac loop filter, the mode-locked lasing is occurred. The electrical power sensitivity of the resonant wavelength is measured to 1.75pm/mW. This laser configuration can be applied the electrical power system for monitoring the power fluctuation.
