Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the correlation between personal temperament, dental visit, and dental fear among adults. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 400 adults visiting dental clinics from April to June, 2016. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, dental fear, and temperament. Data were analyzed by t test, chi-square test, chi-square test, and pearson's correlation analysis using SPSS v. 23.0. Results: The first impression of dental clinics had an impact on dental fear (p<0.001). The negative image on the dental clinics increased dental fear of the visitors. There was a significant difference between the purpose of dental visit and dentla fear. Conclusions: The positive image of the dental clinics can solve the dental fear due to treatment in the adults. The dental consumers should try to have the comfortable attitude toward dental clinic in case of visit.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the difference between the faller and the non-faller in the test for balance and fear of falling. This was also done to determine whether the balance and the fear of falling are correlated in the elderly. Method: Forty eight subjects participated in this study, who attended the senior center in Daegu. Prior to the test, demographic data was collected. As for the balance test, Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up & Go (TUG), Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), Functional Reach Test (FRT), and One Leg Stance (OLS) were used. For measuring the fear of falling, Falls Efficacy Scale (FES) and Activities-specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC) were used. Independent t-test and Pearson's correlation was performed using PASW 18.0 for windows. Result: All balance tests, except OLS, and fear of falling could discriminate between the faller and the non-faller. There existed a significant correlation between some balance test and fear of falling (r=0.64~0.86). Conclusion: The findings indicate that assessing the falling in the elderly, there needs to be a consideration of multiple aspects including the fear of falling and not only the balance test.
The objective of this study was to examine possible causes of fear of dental treatment in middle school students. The subjects were a total of 347 students who were selected by convenience sampling from among the students of the middle schools located in Cheongju, Korea. They were administered a self report survey. The results showed that overall dental fear was higher among female students than male students. With respect to associative dental fears, they felt fear the most when they waited sitting on the dental chair. In fears of specific dental stimuli, needles were the most fearful stimulus. In the areas of fears of specific dental stimuli and overall dental fear, the subjects with indirect pain experiences felt fear more. There exists a need to develop dental health care programs that will help to manage and decrease fear of dental treatment.
Purpose: This descriptive study investigated the mediating and moderating effects of fear of fall on the relationships between health belief on fall, fall-related knowledge and fall prevention behaviors among older adults Methods: We enrolled 229 older adults residing in a senior citizen hall and community welfare center, and investigated their health belief on fall, fall-related knowledge, fall prevention behavior, and fear of fall. Descriptive statistics, ANOVA and t-test were used to analyze differences in variables. Pearson correlation and multiple regression were used to investigate mediating and moderating effects of the fear of fall on the relationships between health belief on fall, fall-related knowledge, and fall prevention behaviors. Results: The fear of fall significantly mediated the health belief on fall and fall prevention behaviors, but there was no significant mediation between knowledge of fall and fall prevention behaviors. The fear of fall did not have a moderating effect on the relationships between health belief on fall, knowledge of fall, and fall prevention behaviors. Conclusion: It is important to investigate and implement health belief on fall and fear of fall among older adults to improve their fall prevention behaviors.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between conscious sedation, a moderate sedation method used to reduce dental fear, and anxiety. Methods: The previously developed modified dental anxiety investigation scale (MDAS) and dental fear investigation scale (DFS) were investigated using a self-administered survey for adults aged 19 to 65 years old who visited a dental clinic located in Daegu City from April to November 2020. Those who met the ASA Recommendation Level 1 to 2 were the subjects of this study. The participants were evaluated using the sedation severity rating scale (OAA/S) during the implementation of conscious sedation. A lot of 106 valid questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS. Results: Dental fear and anxiety decreased significantly after dental care with conscious sedation. Dental fear after dental care accompanied by conscious sedation was statistically significant in females, those under the age of 40, those with a bachelor's degree or higher, and those who weighed 60 kg or less. Conclusions: Dental care using conscious sedation was found to have an effect on the reduction of dental fear after the dental procedure. Dental fear can occur in people of all ages, and, regardless of the individual's general and physical characteristics, conscious calming is considered an effective intervention for dental fear in all adults.
The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to explore fear of falling in relation to activity restriction of in the community dwelling elderly. Two hundred ninety-nine community dwelling elderly residing in Seoul and Kyonggi-do were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. The results were as follows : 1. Subjects were predominantly women$(70.6\%)$, an average 72.5 years old; the incidence of falls in last one year was $45.5\%$. 2. The highest level of fear found for activity in those who say they do engage and those who do not engage in the activity was 'going out when it is slippery '(m=2.53, 2.81) and 'reach for something over your head'(m=1.66, 2.60). Fear of falling scores were significant lower for those who say they do engage in eight kinds of activities (excluded activities of given were 'go to the store', 'take a tub bath', 'get out of bed') than for those who do not engage in the activities. 3. Among those who did not perform the activity, the three activities, when it is slippy(n=80), reaching overhead(n=70), and walk outside(n=59),were most often avoided because fear alone as well as for reasons in addition to fear. 4. The significant variables associated with fear of falling were female(p=0.0000), 1 educational status(p=0.000l), poor economic condition(p=0.0007), and experience of falls in last one year(p=0.0007). Fear of falling is common in the community dwelling elderly in Korea and is associated with several demographical variables. Therefore, to prevent falls and to reduce fear of falling, further study for development of education program for the elderly is needed.

Reducing fear of cancer is significant in developing cancer screening interventions, but the levels of fear may vary depending on the degrees of media exposure as well as individuals' socioeconomic positions (SEP). However, few studies have examined how the SEP influences the fear of cancer under the moderating process of general and specific forms of media exposure. We investigated the moderating effect of media exposure on the relationship between SEP and the level of fear of cancer by assuming that cancer knowledge is a covariate between those two. In particular, this study examined how exposure to both general and specific media changes the series of processes from SEP to fear of cancer. We conducted path analyses with three types of media - television, radio and the Internet- using data from a health communication survey of 613 adults in Massachusetts in the United States. We found that SEP influences cancer knowledge directly and fear of cancer indirectly, as moderated by the level of media exposure. Health-specific exposure, however, had a more consistent effect than general media exposure in lowering the fear of cancer by increasing knowledge about cancer. A higher level of health-specific exposure and greater amount of cancer knowledge lessened the fear of cancer. In addition, the more people were exposed to health information on television and the Internet, the lower the level of fear of cancer as a result. These findings indicate a relationship between SEP and fear of cancer, as moderated by the level and type of media exposure. Furthermore, the findings suggest that for early detection or cancer prevention strategies, health communication approaches through mass media need to be considered.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the actual oral health status and dental fear level in the elderly. Methods: Data were collected by questionnaire interview method from June 15, 2013 to December 14, 2013. The subjects were elderly over 65 years old in Jeonbuk province. The study instrument was structured questionnaire including general characteristics of the subjects(3 questions), oral health management status(16 questions), Dental Fear Survey(DFS, 9 questions). Cronbach alphas were 0.804 and 0.959 in the study. Higher score of oral health management status showed good oral health care and higher DFS showed higher level of dental fear. Data were analyzed by t-test, one way ANOVA, post-hoc Scheffe test, and Pearson correlation analysis. Higher dental fear was defined below 33.3%. Results: Women tended to have better oral health than male. Women brush their teeth more frequently than male. Most of the elderly answered that it was important to brush teeth for 3 minutes, to use dental floss and to have oral health education(p<0.05). Score of dental fear level was similar in men and women. Those who were above 69 years old tended to have dental fear. Poor oral health condition was closely related to dental fear. Conclusions: The oral care in the elderly showed considerable differences between the groups and affected the dental fear. It is important to implement the nationwide dental care for the elderly in the future.
Recently, there have been numerous issues about password breaches and it is becoming important for the users to manage their passwords. In practice, the online service provider are asking the online users to change their passwords periodically. However, majority of the users are not changing their passwords regularly, and this can increase the risk of password breach. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether 'fear appeals' and 'message framing' enhance the behavior of changing passwords by the online users. Furthermore, we identify the mechanism on how the behavior of changing passwords is enabled using protection motivation theory. The results of an online experiment show that the online users who are exposed to 'fear appeals' perceived a more vulnerability and severity of password breaches, which in turn, increased the intention of changing their password. In addition, we found that perceived severity of password breaches affect fear positively. Moreover, we found that fear has significant impact on the willingness of changing passwords. Finally, Message framing plays a moderating role between fear and change intentions. That is, in a situation where 'fear appeal' is presented, it means that 'gain framing' is more effective than 'loss framing' These findings suggest that the online service providers may need to use 'fear appeals' to the online users. Security managers can address issues related to the password breaches by carefully designing 'fear appeals'.
