Effect of Conjugated Linoleic Acid Feeding on the Growth Performance and Meat Fatty Acid Profiles in Broiler: Meta-analysis

  • The effect of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) feeding on growth performance and fatty acid profiles in thigh meat of broiler chicken was investigated using meta-analysis with a total of 9 studies. Overall effects were calculated by standardized mean differences between treatment (CLA fed) and control using Hedges's adjusted g from fixed and random effect models. Meta-regression was conducted to evaluate the effect of CLA levels. Subgroups in the same study were designated according to used levels of CLA, CP levels or substituted oils in diets. The effects on final body weight, weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio were investigated as growth parameters. Total saturated and unsaturated fatty acid concentrations and C16:0, C18:0, C18:2 and C18:3 concentrations in thigh meat of broiler chicken were used as fatty acid profile parameters. The overall effect of CLA feeding on final weight was negative and it was only significant in fixed effect model (p<0.01). Significantly lower weight gain, feed intake and higher feed conversion ratio compared to control were found (p<0.05). CLA feeding on the overall increased total saturated fatty acid concentration in broilers compared to the control diet (p<0.01). Total unsaturated fatty acid concentration was significantly decreased by CLA feeding (p<0.01). As for individual fatty acid profiles, C16:0, C18:0 and C18:3 were increased and C18:2 was significantly decreased by CLA feeding (p<0.01). In conclusion, CLA was proved not to be beneficial for improving growth performance, whereas it might be supposed that CLA is effective modulating n-6/n-3 fatty acids ratio in thigh meat. However, the economical compensation of the loss from suppressed growth performance and increased saturated fatty acids with the benefit from enhanced n-6/n-3 ratio should be investigated in further studies in order to propose an appropriate use of dietary CLA in the broiler industry.

Effect of Treatment with Docosahexaenoic Acid into N-3 Fatty Acid Adequate Diet on Learning Related Brain Function in Rat (N-3계 지방산 적절 함량 식이의 docosahexaenoic acid 첨가가 기억력 관련 뇌 기능에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of adding docosahexaenoic acid into an n-3 fatty acid adequate diet on the improvement of learning related brain function was investigated. On the second day after conception, Sprague Dawley strain dams were subjected to a diet containing either n-3 fatty acid adequate (Adq, 3.4% linolenic acid) or n-3 fatty acid adequate+docosahexaenoic acid (Adq+DHA, 3.31%linolenic acid plus 9.65% DHA). After weaning, male pups were fed on the same diet of their respective dams until adulthood. Motor activity and Morris water maze tests were measured at 10 weeks. In the motor activity test, there were no statistically significant differences in moving time and moving distance between the Adq and Adq+DHA diet groups. The n-3 fatty acid adequate with DHA (Adq+DHA) group tended to show a shorter escape latency, swimming time and swimming distance compared to the n-3 fatty acid adequate group (Adq), but the differences were not statistically significant. There was no difference in resting time, but the Adq+DHA group showed a higher swimming speed compared to the Adq group. In memory retention trials, the numbers of crossing of the platform position (region A), in which the hidden platform was placed, were significantly greater than those of other regions for both Adq and Adq+DHA groups. Based on these results, adding DHA into the n-3 fatty acid adequate diet from gestation to adulthood tended to induce better spatial learning performance in Sprague Dawley rats as assessed by the Morris water maze test, although the difference was not significant.

Physicochemical Composition of Capsosiphon fulvescens (매생이의 이화학적 성분)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the major chemical components of dried Capsosiphon fulvescens. The proximate compositions of C. fulvescens as dry matter basis were the moisture content 6.27%, 27.66% of crude protein, 1.68% of crude fat, 10.69% of crude ash, and 53.70% of carbohydrate, respectively. Analysing total amino acids, 17 kinds of components isolated from C. fulvescens. The essential amino acid contained in C. fulvescens accounted for 42.33% of total amino acid, while the non-essential amino acid accounted for 57.67%. Fatty acids were of 13.34% of saturated fatty acids, 21.69% of monounsaturated fatty acids and 64.97% of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Linoleic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid and linolenic acid were the major fatty acids among 14 fatty acids detected in dried C. fulvescens. Oxalic acid was the major organic acids. Analysis of Crude Fat and Fatty Acid in Collections of Ricinus communis L. (아주까리(비마자) 수집종의 조지방 및 지방산 분석)

  • Forty Ricinus communis collections were obtained from RDA National Agrobiodiversity Center for knowing the possibility of the use as a bio-diesel possibility crop. These are analysis results about crude fat and fatty acid. Gas chromatogram of seed collections analysis showed 6 peaks and retention time of ricinoleic acid was about 17.1 minute. Average oil content of collections were ranged from 44.6 to 49.4% and the difference was between maximum 52.5% and minimum 41.4%. Fatty acid composition was almost unsaturated fatty acid of 97.6% and saturated fatty acid showed low content of 2.4%. Ricinoleic acid was 87.3% and the content of oleic acid and linoleic acid in fatty acid was 4.6%, and 5.2%, respectively. The content of palmitic acid and stearic acid was about 1% and the difference was insignificant. The content of linolenic acid was extremely low as 0.6%.

The Effect of Dietary Ionized Water and Premixed Mineral on Fatty Acid and Amino Acid Composition in Finishing Pigs (이온수와 복합광물질 급여가 비육돈의 지방산 및 아미노산 조성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to determine the effects of ion water and premixed mineral supplementation on the growth performance, carcass, and meat quality parameters in finishing pigs (LY$\times$D). Each 20 pigs were randomly allotted to three treatments; CON (basal diet), T1 (CON diet added active water), T3 (T1 diet added 1.0% premixed mineral). Used ion water and premixed mineral consisted mainly of Zn and Si, respectively. Cholesterol content (mg% meat) were not differ significantly in the samples, however, the ratios of cholesterol to fat in T1 and T2 was significantly lower than the control (p<0.05). The fatty acid qualities of palmitic acid, linoleic acid, arachidonic acid, SFA (saturated fatty acid), EFA (essential fatty acid), and EFA/UFA ratio were the highest significantly, however, those of the oleic acid, UFA (unsaturated fatty acid), and UFA/SFA ratio were the lowest significantly in T2 (p<0.05). The amino acid levels of glutamic acid, alanine, leucine, lysine, total amino acids, and EAA (essential amino acid) were the highest in T1 (p<0.05). Whereas, the levels of serine, valine, isoleucine were the highest in T2 (p<0.05). The results indicate that dietary ionized water and premixed mineral affects fatty acid composition and improves amino acid composition.

The Influence of Saturated Fats, ${\alpha}-linolenic$ Acid, EPA and DHA on the Lipid Hydroperoxide Level and Fatty Acid Composition in Liver Microsomes and in Plasma Lipid of Rabbits

  • To investigate the influence of saturated fats, ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid, EPA and DHA on the lipid hydroperoxide concentration and fatty acid composition in liver microsomes and in plasma lipid of rabbits, the animals were fed on the perilla oil rich ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid or sardine oil rich EPA and DHA diet for four weeks Were examined. The fatty acid composition of plasma lipid and liver microsomes of rabbits fed on the perilla oil diet was an accumulation of arachidonic acid(AA) 20:4 n-6, eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA) 20:5 n-3, and docosahexaenoic acid(DHA) 22:6 n-3, The fatty acid composition of plasma lipid and liver microsomes of rabbits fed on the sardine oil was an accumulation of ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid(LNA) 18:3 n-3, and arachidonic acid(AA) 20:4. The p/s ratio of rabbits fed on the perilla oil diet changed from 7.4 to 2.27 for plasma lipid and 2.47 for liver microsomes. The concentration of lipid hydroperoxide was 3.48 nmol MDA/ml and 4.35 nmol MDA/ml for plasma lipid and liver microsomes, respectively, in perilla oil diet. The lipid hydroperoxide liver was 4.22 nmol MDA/ml and 67 nmol MDA/ml for plasma lipid and liver microsornes in sardine oil diet.

  • The effects of amphotericin B (150 $\mu$g/ml) and cycloheximide (10 $\mu$g/ml) on the biosynthesis of phospholipid and their fatty acid composition in chloroplast isolated from Chlorella were analyzed to compare with control. The levels of total lipid, phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), and phosphatidylcholine (PC) in the group treated with antibiotics were decreased. However, the biosynthesis of phosphatidylinositol (PI) was not affected by antibiotics. The major fatty acid in chloroplast envelope was linolenic acid (27.71%) in control and stearic acid (21.59%) in the group treated with amphotericin B. It was showed that the group treated with cycloheximide contained more unsaturated fatty acid than the control.

Effect of Initial pH and L-Arginine on the Composition of Fatty Acids of Streptomyces viridochromogenes

  • Mycelia of Streptomyces viridochromogenes grown under different pH were analysed for the fatty acid composition. The low relative proportion of 12-methyltetradecanoic acid and the high relative proportion of palmitic acid were characteristic for the young culture under slight acidic pH that caused delay of the aerial mycelium formation. The addition of L-arginine to the culture medium enabled an arginine auxotroph with bald phenotype to have the fatty acid composition similar to that of the wild type and to develop aerial mycelium. The ratio of 12-methyltetradecanoic acid to palmitic acid might be used as a parameter to explain the optimum grwoth in the respect of membrane fluidity.

  • This study was designed to examine the effect of ${\omega}-3$ fatty acid, linlenic acid, EPA, DHA on serum lipid and cytokines of male rats(Sprague-Dawley). Animals of 3 groups were administrated perilla oil, salmoon oil, and tuna oil of 0.4 $m{\ell}/day$ for 8 weeks respectively. These oils were used for a source of linolenic acid, EPA and DHA. ${\omega}-3$ polyunsaturated fatty acid decreases significantly body weight, serum $PGE_2$ content and serum cytokines content of the rat, and increases internal organs weight, specially liver weight and serum HDL-cholesterol level of the rat. In the results, authors propose to use perilla oil for source of effective ${\omega}-3$ poly-unsaturated fatty acid(linolenic acid) to Prevent cardiovascular and immune diseases.

Identification of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Using Fatty Acid Analysis (지방산분석을 이용한 Pseudomonas aeruginosa의 동정)

  • Cellular fatty acid composition of 17 strains of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa was determined by gas-liquid chromatography isolated from environmental and clinical sample in a C university hospital. Straight-chain saturated acid of C16:0 and straight-chain unsaturated acid of C18:1 with a double bond were commonly found in all the strains tested. The presence of 12:0 3OH (3-10%), 16:0 (18-28%), and 18:1w7c (17-37%) showed the characteristics of the species in the Pseudomonas. Bacterial fatty acid composition was considered to be useful for the study of interrelation and for rapid identification of the bacteria.
