Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the acceptance of family diversity among college students and related variables. Method: Data were collected by a structured questionnaire with 280 students who attended in three universities located in J province. SPSS Statistics Program version 24.0 was used to analyze the collected data. To answer the research questions, descriptive statistics, t-test, F-test, Pearson's correlation analyses, and regression analyses were performed. Results: The major results of the survey were summarized as below. First, the acceptance of family diversity among college students was slightly higher than the middle level(M=12.11). Most students accepted nuclear family as a typical family. More than half of the students accepted single parent families, adaptive families, step families, unmarried mother families, childless couples, homosexual families, elderly women living alone, and families composed of siblings as a family. Second, there was a significant difference by religiosity. Students without religion were higher than their counterparts with religion in a level of family diversity acceptance. Among the individual factors, third, a level of traditional family value had a significant negative effect on a level of family diversity acceptance. And perspective taking had a positive effect on a level of family diversity acceptance. Fourth, among the family factors, parent-child open communication did not affect a level of family diversity acceptance. However, parents' gender egalitarian beliefs had a significant positive effect on a level of family diversity acceptance. Lastly, regarding the relative effects of the personal and family factors, the traditional family value had the largest effect on a level of family diversity acceptance among college students. Conclusions: Base on these results, the implications and limitations of the study were discussed.
Purpose: This study is an integrative review of previous research conducted on family-school nurse partnership in school health care, as perceived by school nurses, children, and families. Method: The study was conducted according to the five stages of integrative review suggested by Whittemore and Knafl (2005), which involved problem identification, literature search, data evaluation, data analysis, and presentation of results. Suitable literature was found using portals such as PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and Web of Science. Key words such as school nurses, family, parents, children, and partnership were used to narrow the search results. Studies published in peer-review journals between 2006-2018 were selected. The quality of studies was appraised using critical appraisal tools provided by the Joanna Briggs Institute (2020). Result: Thirteen studies (5 quantitative and 8 qualitative) were finalized for the final review process. After an extensive review, four key themes of school nurse-family partnership in school health care were identified: partnership components, partnership barriers, partnership facilitators, and strategies to promote partnership. Conclusion: Partnership and its components, barriers, and facilitators, along with strategies for its promotion should be considered in school health care. Further studies are needed on the perceptions held by parents and children regarding school health care partnership.
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether parent education programs conducted in South Korea were effective in changing in parents' behaviors, parents' internal characteristics, and children's characteristics. We retrieved journal articles published in Korea between 2006 and 2011 using keyword searches of electronic databases. A total of 41 studies were included in our meta-analyses. The results showed that parent education programs had large positive effects on parents' behavioral changes and children's changes along with medium to large effects on parents' internal changes. The strengths of effect sizes varied depending upon program characteristics including children's age, the number of participants, participants' gender, the number of sessions, and group characteristics. This study provided powerful scientific evidence for public policies and services that aim to support and empower parents by providing parent education programs.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the structural relationships among different variables related to school adjustment. 601 elementary school students residing in Pohang-City in Korea completed questionnaires about school adjustment, internal problem behavior, external problem behavior, family adaptability and family cohesion. A variance-covariance matrix of this sample was analyzed using AMOS 19.0, and the maximum likelihood minimization function. The goodness of fit was evaluated via SRMR, RMSEA with a 90% confidence interval, CFI, and TLI. The results were as follows: First, family adaptability, family cohesion, internal problem behavior and external problem behavior were all found to have a significant direct effect how the children adjusted to their school. Second, family adaptability, and family cohesion had a direct effect on internal problem behavior. Third, family cohesion had a direct effect on external problem behavior, but family adaptability had a substantial indirect effect on the children's external problem behavior that was mediated by their internal problem behavior. Fourth, internal problem behavior had a direct effect on external problem behavior.
This study investigates the effect of gender role attitude and work family balance on life stress for married career women. We also explore the mediating effect of marital intimacy on the relation between gender role attitude, work family balance, and life stress. The subjects were married women from the five year data of the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Family (KLoWF). Data was analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, structural equational models, and Sobel test with SPSS software ver. 23.0, and Amos software ver. 23.0. The findings are as follows. First, gender role attitude had a direct effect on life stress, but work family balance had no significant effect on life stress. Second, marital intimacy mediated between gender role attitude, work family balance, and life stress. In conclusion, the results can be used as basic data to prevent life stress in married career women and increase marital intimacy.
This study examined the necessity of establishing a family archive as a means for the recovery of the family community and the direction for establishing the family archive as a social culture. With the lack of research on family archives worldwide, this study analyzed family archives focusing on three areas. The first is a review on the necessity of family archives. To this end first, studies in the fields of sociology and family studies were analyzed to understand the situation in which the crisis of the family community intensified in the recent social environment, and based on this analysis, the necessity of establishing a family archive using records in Korean society was suggested. The second is case studies of National Archives of advanced countries for social expansion of family archives. In the case of advanced countries in Western, family archives are closely related to family history or genealogy research, and more than half of visitors to archives are occupied by family history or genealogy researchers. This is because National Archives of Western countries provide a variety of services for building family archives. The third is an analysis of the meaning and characteristics of family archives. This is because in order for the family archive to become a pan-social recording culture, it is necessary to establish the values and roles of the family archive along with its own meaning and characteristics different from the existing public records. Accordingly, the aim was to establish the concept and goal of the family archive, and to explore the functions and values of the family archive in comparison with the existing theories of archives. As a result of the analysis focusing on these three areas, the family archive needs to focus on 'culture', not 'institution', and 'utilization' rather than 'management'. Theories and methodologies of archival science have been developed with an emphasis on systematically managing and preserving a vast amount of records like public records, and based on highly specialized knowledge, records management has been established as an institution. However, in order to spread the family archive socially, it must be established as a culture or lifestyle that can be practiced by all ordinary citizens in the process of daily life. Prior to the management and preservation of professional records, all members of the family must understand the meaning contained in the records. It is necessary to prioritize use so that they can be shared.
This study analyses factors facilitating work-family balance through quantitative research and case study. A sense of balance is more closely related to cognition and satisfaction in work and family than demographic factors. Based on these results, two kinds of educational programs for employees and employers were developed. Both programs consist of 4 sessions and focus on the necessity of work-family balance and the application of family-friendly policie.
This study was aimed at determining the characteristics of circular multi-family housing under the assumption that the shape of a residential building affects local identity. A total of six case studies were included in this study, three case studies on idle historical industrial facilities turned into residential buildings and another three on multi-family housing located in newly developed residential complexes. The study drew its conclusions as follows. First, the design of circular multi-family housing was intended to maximize security and defense from the outside in older times. This was later developed as the terrace house style with geometric urban squares designed under the urban planning of the Baroque period. This evolved high-density housing with a courtyard in the center offering a green open space, with the aim of restoring a sense of humanity. Second, the six case studies on circular multi-family housing were analyzed from the viewpoint of each factor of local identity, including historical and cultural, landscape, and community. Third, the historical and cultural elements of circular multi-family housing are found in some unused historical industrial facilities remodeled into residential buildings. They provide new capabilities and shapes desired by society at a given time, while maintaining familiar styles and elements of history, integrating a legacy of the past into the present. Fourth, circular multi-family housing with unique shapes and structures often become landmarks of a region with their distinctive appearance against a uniform urban environment and the monotonous scenery of residential complexes. They also show a high level of visual awareness with the distinctive shapes made possible when new elements are added to a historical exterior. Finally, circular multi-family housing with courtyards in the center prompt social contact between inhabitants, especially with dormitories and rental houses for the low-income bracket, which provide a small individual units with high use common space. Circular multi-family housing are planned in a manner similar to a small village or a city. They are designed to enhance sense of community, allocating various public amenities and provide cultural and commercial spaces on the ground floor and courtyard areas.
As an exploratory inquiry prior to developing a measure to assess Korean families with adolescents' family resilience, this study examined the construct validity of the family resilience measures that were developed in the U. S. Iowa Youth and Families Project(Conger & Elder, 1994): emotional support between spouses, problem solving style between spouses, and parenting behavior. The participants were 277 pairs of middle aged, middle class husbands and wives (554 individuals) who were the parents of first graders in middle schools in the metropolitan areas around Seoul. The results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis supported the construct validity, indicating that emotional support, problem solving style, and parenting behavior may be used as measures to assess Korean family resilience. However, further tests of convergent validity using various assessment methods and analytical procedures are needed to ensure the construct validity of family resilience measures.
Purpose: The aim of this study is to analyze the characteristics of family interventions based on a philosophy of family-centered care conducted in neonatal intensive care units through an integrative literature review. Methods: We searched the PubMed, CINAHL, RISS, KISS, and DBpia databases; a total of 20 studies, published between January 2013 and May 2018, was selected according to our criteria. Results: Mothers accounted for a greater proportion of participants in family interventions than did fathers. Family interventions described in the studies were categorized into four educational and sixteen non-educational interventions. Among non-educational interventions, skin-to-skin-contact interventions, such as kangaroo care, accounted for the highest proportion. Only one paper employed a theoretical framework. Conclusion: More family interventions based on theoretical frameworks should be conducted as these frameworks serve as guidelines for nursing research. As the stress patterns experienced by parents in neonatal intensive care units showed gender differences, more programs tailored for fathers are needed. Moreover, further research should be conducted to evaluate feasibility as an outcome variable, and studies of family interventions based on a philosophy of family-centered care should be performed more actively in the neonatal intensive care units in Korea.
