Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting the quality of life of family caregivers of patients with Parkinson disease in Korea. Methods: A total of 162 family caregivers of patients with Parkinson disease who were visiting the D hospital in B city completed questionnaires, including general and disease-specific characteristics, family burden, patient-caregiver relationship satisfaction, family support and quality of life. Data were analyzed with t-test, ANOVA with $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 23.0. Results: The average score of the quality of life was $85.54{\pm}17.74$ (range: 26~130) among family caregivers of patients with Parkinson disease. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that fifty percent of the quality of life was explained by family support, family burden, and patient-caregiver relationship satisfaction. Conclusion: Family support, family burden, and patient-caregiver relationship satisfaction were identified as factors affecting the quality of life of family caregivers of patients with Parkinson disease. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a program to enhance family support and reduce family burden to improve the quality of life of family members caring for patients with Parkinson disease.
Purpose : This study is to examine the characteristics of the elderly and their family caregivers. to study the main factors affecting Nursing Home utilization, and to help frame a policy about Nursing Home's demand. management and welfare facilities. Instrumental Activities of Daily Living(IADL), duration of hospitalization, sex, marital status, behavior problems, home ownership, and cognitive disorder about elderly patients affect family caregivers burden. one of need factors. Secondly, marital status. religion. health status, sex, education and age in the family caregiver predisposing factors are main factors on Nursing Home utilization. Third, in need factors, care burden. time burden, family relation burden, physical burden and mental burden have an effect on Nursing Home utilization. Finally, the model the most important factors that affect Nursing Home utilization is composed of six of eleven totally, care burden, religion, time burden, health status, marital status and education. When the family caregivers get care burden and time burden. are highly educated, have no religion, have health problems, and have no spouse, it is possibility for them to utilize Nursing Homes. Conclusion: The government should decrease a family caregivers burden and seek to find how to support Nursing Homes. Furthermore. Social support program for the family caregivers should be required. Thus, the family caregivers need consultation and need to meet to talk about their patients. how to care them, get information, which are the crucial field in advancing the research in nursing science.
Objectives: With the rapidly increasing incidence of cancer worldwide, it has become important for health care professionals to both provide care for cancer patients and to address the challenges faced by family caregivers of cancer patients. This study aims to identify the factors affecting depression among cancer patients' family caregivers. The results of this study suggest the need to propose programs for family caregivers as well as cancer patients. Methods: Participants were 219 caregivers who were informed of the study purpose and agreed to participate. Data were analyzed using t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple stepwise regression with the SPSS/WIN 25.0 program. Results: The mean score for depression among cancer patients' family caregivers was $1.57{\pm}.40$ (range: 0-3). Depression was significantly different based on age, relationship with the patient, education, occupation, cancer recurrence, care days per week, financial burden, site of cancer, and health status. Analysis using multiple regression showed that model 1 showed 16% of the factors predicting depression among cancer patients' family caregivers (F=6.16, p<.001) including occupation, recurrence, and health status of the caregiver. Model 3, which included additional burnout, showed 37% of the factors predicting depression (F=12.36, p<.001). Conclusions: These results suggest that it is necessary to develop programs for prevention and management of depression among cancer patients' family caregivers.
Purpose: Most of the currently used concepts and measurements of social support have been relevant for general population. The main purpose of this study is to conduct the concept analysis of perceived social support(PSS) of family caregivers for people with dementia. Methods: This study adopted the Walker and Avant concept analysis methodology. Results: Findings from this concept analysis suggested four defining attributes of PSS of family caregivers for people with dementia: 1) PSS is help or assistance that family caregivers perceive as available when needed; 2) PSS is offered through socio-ecological structure; 3) PSS has a specific function to meet the needs of family caregivers; and 4) PSS includes quality aspects where family caregivers choose, use, or evaluate it. Borrowing from the socio-ecological model, this study proposed the structural aspects of PSS. This study also identified functional aspects of PSS, such as emotional support, informational support, appraisal support, and practical support. Finally, this study assessed quality aspects of PSS, such as satisfaction, timeliness, usefulness, accessibility, and coordination. Conclusion: Focusing on family caregivers for people with dementia, we proposed a new model of PSS. The present study helped refine and clarify the concept of PSS of family caregivers for people with dementia. The results of this study may also contribute to promoting the development of more effective instruments for the concept.
This is a descriptive study that introduces programs that support family caregivers looking after the elderly, by focusing on the case of Georgia, in the United States. The U.S. is one of the few countries that support family caregivers by law. In this study, we focus on the evidence-based interventions implemented through the Alzheimer's Disease Supportive Services Program (ADSSP), a federal policy that complements the National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP). Our findings show that one-on-one evidence-based programs (EBPs) for family caregivers are both economical and effective in assisting caregivers. In our discussion, we highlight how the implementation of the latest EBPs can build an infrastructure to support family caregivers. ADSSP funding is useful as it constructs a caregiver support through the implementation of programs in the local community. The result is the creation of a well-coordinated division of labor among government agencies, academia and NGOs, which produces a synergetic effect in funding, research and development, translation and implementation of programs, and staff training. We conclude that the implementation of EBPs funded by the government is a useful reference for Korea and other rapidly aging countries, if we are to create an infrastructure for caregiver support, which can effectively prevent a crisis in caregiving.
Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the relationship between stress and quality of life of family caregivers of patients with lung cancer. Methods: From April 18 to May 4, 2009, data were collected using self-report questionnaires with 95 family caregivers of lung cancer patients in G cancer center. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and pearson's correlation coefficient with SPSS 14.0. Results: The mean score of the stress level was 27.5 (SD=14.77). The mean score of the QOL was 73.0 (SD=17.86). The stress level of family caregiver showed significant difference according to gender (psychological stress p=.011, total level of stress p=.042) and availableness of second caregiver (physical stress p=.023, psychological stress p=.035, total level of stress p=.001). The QOL of family caregivers showed significant difference according to daily caring (positive adaptation p=.045) and financial burden on treatment expense (positive adaptation p=.004, total quality of life p=.043). The negative correlation was found between stress and QOL of family caregivers (r=-.67, p=.032). Conclusion: These results indicate a need to develop nursing intervention programs for family caregivers to reduce stress and improve QOL.
Purpose: This study of this study was to identify factors influencing the burden of main family caregivers who take care of elderly patients with brain and spinal diseases. Methods: This was conducted as descriptive research and data were collected from 255 main family caregivers who were taking care of elderly patients with brain and spinal diseases from 4 hospitals in Daegu and Gyeongbuk Province. Stepwise-multiple regression was used to identify the influencing factors of burden felt. Results: As the score of burden felt by the main family, economic, social, physical, interdependent and emotional burdens were high in order. Factors influencing burden felt by main family care givers taking care of elderly patients with brain and spinal diseases were changed relation with patient after hospitalization, daily life ability, marital status, education and family caregiver's personality (explanatory power of 24.6%). Family caregivers felt a heavier burden when their relation with the patient was changed negatively or when the patient's activity of daily living was low. Conclusion: Based on these results, we need to develop coping measures and interventional programs for reducing the burden felt by the main family caregivers of elderly patients with brain and spinal diseases.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of an information protocol for anxiety and nursing satisfaction of family caregivers. The caregivers were caring for a family member who had a CVA (cerebrovascular accident) and who had been admitted to the ICU (intensive care unit). Method: The research design was a non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design. Data were collected from April 1 to October 31, 2005 at D hospital in Busan City The participants were 40 family caregivers of patients with a CVA admitted to the ICU. Caregivers in the experimental group participated in the information protocol for 30 min. Both groups were pre-tested before the intervention for two variables, anxiety and nursing needs. The post-test of both groups included anxiety and nursing satisfaction. The instruments used in this study were the Spielberger's state anxiety inventory (1976) and the nursing satisfaction scale developed by Molter (1979). Results: Anxiety scores were significantly lower and nursing satisfaction scores were significantly higher for caregivers in the experimental group compared to those in the control group. Conclusion: The information protocol was effective in reducing anxiety and increasing the level of nursing satisfaction of family caregivers caring for an ICU patients with a CVA.
Purpose: This study was to determine the mediator or moderator role of social support in the relationship between stress and depression among family caregivers of older adults with dementia. Method: Sixty nine family caregivers were randomly selected from health care centers in P city and a face-to-face interview was conducted using questionnaires from January to May of 2002. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression using SPSS program. Result: Family caregivers of older adults with higher dependency in ADLs and higher problematic behaviors, provided care to the older adults for a longer period of time, and perceived less social support reported higher depression. Social support showed mediating effects between stress and depression, while did not show moderating effects. Elderly dependency on ADLs and caregiving duration decreased perceived social support and decreased social support increased depression. Conclusion: To increase family and social support to the caregivers of more functionally impaired elderly, family education to increase emotional support and physical assistance to the caregivers and broader and flexible application of social support such as increasing accessibility to the elderly daycare service with lower price may prove beneficial.
Purpose: This study was to test a structural model of spirituality and the quality of life of stroke survivors' caregivers in order to provide guidelines for the development of intervention and strategies to improve their quality of life. Methods: Data were collected from 133 family caregivers of stroke patients who were hospitalized in C university hospital located in Seoul. Data collection using survey questionnaires was done from May, 2013 to February, 2014. Results: Fitness of the hypothetical model was appropriate. Physical component of quality of life of family caregivers is directly affected by two variables (51.5%), burden and depression. Mental component of quality of life of family caregivers is directly affected by three variables (77.6%), depression, burden, and functional dependence of patients. Depression as well as burden were directly affected by spirituality and functional dependence of patients respectively. Thus, spirituality directly affected depression and burden and indirectly affected the quality of life of family caregivers. Conclusion: Therefore, spiritual intervention to improve the stroke caregivers' quality of life might be necessary to support and strengthen their spirituality as a mediating variable that can contribute to decreasing their depression and burden.
