  • Familial searching is a useful technique in a forensic investigation. Using genetic information, it is possible to identify individuals, determine familial relationships, and obtain racial/ethnic information. The total number of shared alleles (TNSA) and likelihood ratio (LR) methods have traditionally been used, and novel data-mining classification methods have recently been applied here as well. However, it is difficult to apply these methods to identify familial relationships above the third degree (e.g., uncle-nephew and first cousins). Therefore, we propose to apply a stacking ensemble machine learning algorithm to improve the accuracy of familial relationship identification. Using real data analysis, we obtain superior relationship identification results when applying meta-classifiers with a stacking algorithm rather than applying traditional TNSA or LR methods and data mining techniques.

  • This study examined the interaction between children's peer experiences and familial support in relation to their psychosocial adjustment(self-esteem and lonelitness). Peer experiences were examined in terms of children's perceptions of peer acceptance and the reciprocity of best friendship. The subjects were 2754th or 5th graders residing in Seoul. It was found that the interaction between children's perceptions of peer acceptance and familial support, and that between the reciprocity of bort friendship and familial support were both significant predictors of children's loneliness whereas only the former was a significant predictor of children's self-esteem. The study results suggest that children's experiences from one type of interpersonal relationship should be examined in conjunction with their experiences in other types of relationships in order to better understand the psychosocial domains of child development.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of protective and risk factors with adolescent delinquency. Using nationally representative data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) project, the delinquency level and the influence of individual characteristics, dyadic relationships in the family, school and peer variables on adolescent delinquency were examined by gender. Boys and girls differed in delinquency level with boys showing significantly higher delinquency than girls. The relative influence of protective and risk factors in individual, familial, peer, and school contexts differed by gender as well. More diverse variables influenced the delinquency level of girls than that of boys.

  • Objective: Familial intracranial aneurysms (FIAs) are found in approximately 6%-20% of patients with intracranial aneurysms (IAs), suggesting that genetic predisposition likely plays a role in its pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to identify possible IA-associated variants using whole exome sequencing (WES) in selected Korean families with FIA. Materials and Methods: Among the 26 families in our institutional database with two or more IA-affected first-degree relatives, three families that were genetically enriched (multiple, early onset, or common site involvement within the families) for IA were selected for WES. Filtering strategies, including a family-based approach and knowledge-based prioritization, were applied to derive possible IA-associated variants from the families. A chromosomal microarray was performed to detect relatively large chromosomal abnormalities. Results: Thirteen individuals from the three families were sequenced, of whom seven had IAs. We noted three rare, potentially deleterious variants (PLOD3 c.1315G>A, NTM c.968C>T, and CHST14 c.58C>T), which are the most promising candidates among the 11 potential IA-associated variants considering gene-phenotype relationships, gene function, co-segregation, and variant pathogenicity. Microarray analysis did not reveal any significant copy number variants in the families. Conclusion: Using WES, we found that rare, potentially deleterious variants in PLOD3, NTM, and CHST14 genes are likely responsible for the subsets of FIAs in a cohort of Korean families.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships among 'leisure constraints', 'leisure sufficiency' and 'life satisfaction' perceived by late middle-aged adults. The subjects of this research were 275 adults from 50 to 64. The results are as follows: 1) Among 5 categories of 'leisure constraints', the subjects perceive' financial constraints' as the most important, and in order of importance, 'social constraints', 'physical constraints', and 'familial constraints' followed. 2) Among five 'leisure activities', a factor perceived most sufficiently by middle-aged adults is 'simple relaxation' and followed by 'social activities', 'activities with family'. 'learning activities', and 'play-recreation activities'. 3) The factors influencing life satisfaction perceived by late-middle aged adults are 'religion', 'financial constraints', 'education', 'familial constraints', 'physical constraints', 'learning activities', and 'play-recreation activities'. These 7 factors explain 38.9% of total variation. Also, the 'leisure constraints' has a greater impact on their 'life satisfaction' than on their 'leisure sufficiency'.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how much individual, relational, and contextual variables have an effect on the dating violence of premarital males and females. Researched are 369 male and female residents over 19 years who have experienced dating or were involved in any dating relationships in Daegu. The instruments of measurement are CTSⅡ scale and scales of relation to individual, relational, and contextual variables. The data are analysed through factor analysis, Cronbach's α, frequency, percentile, and stepwise regression analysis. The major findings of this study are as follows: First, individual variables that affect doing and victimization of dating violence are one's permission degree of dating violence, and psychological abuses experienced during childhood from one's mother. Second, relational variables that affect doing and victimization of dating violence are control toward one's partner, communication, conflict, commitment, intimacy, satisfaction of dating relationship, and feeling of inferiority toward one's partner. Third, contextual variables that affect doing and victimization of dating violence are familial relationships, friend relationships, and financial stresses.

  • This study attempted to examine the changing patterns of marital love constructs among married men and women in Korea. It is based on our prior research that showed each of the 3 dimensions of marital love(intimacy, passion, and commitment derived from Stermberg’s Triangular Theory of Love) shaped U pattern as the marriage continued. We analyzed 1687 respondents’answers by principal axis factoring with contextual point of view including individual, familial, and socio-cultural development. The results are as follows. First, the love constructs of Korean men and women in their marriage show different qualitative patterns as the marriage continued. Second, intimacy is the most powerful indicator of love, coming out the first factor in all the stages of marital relationships. Third we can see marital stability from the locus of commitment with other components of love and it could be apply to marital educational program for promoting marital stability. Forth, passion is found separated behavioral from perceived dimension except the first marital stage. As conclusion, it need to analyze with family life cycle. birth and marriage cohort groups for examining closely the causes of this qualitative changes in marital relationships.

  • Childhood exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) and other adversities has been shown to have adverse effects on health and well-being not only in childhood but also throughout the lifespan. This paper focuses on the prevalence of childhood adversities including exposure to IPV. The intersection of adverse childhood experiences and IPV victimization/perpetration in adulthood is also explored. The neurobiology of trauma is discussed and by understanding the impact of trauma on health, it is hoped that enhancement of resilience is possible. Based on the identification of protective factors at the individual, familial, and community level, examples of interventions that encourage safe, stable, and nurturing relationships between parents and children are described.

  • The present study investigated differences in children's school achievement and emotional and social development by type of after-school care: self-care and mother-care. It also examined relationships between children's developmental outcomes and ecological variables, including individual, familial, and environmental variables by care methods. The data of 330 mother-care and 161 self-care children was provided by teachers, mothers, and the children themselves. The analyses of the data were conducted by t-test, correlation, and regression. Findings were that mother-care children had higher scores in grades, school adjustment and teacher relationship and lower depression and withdrawn behaviors than self-care children; after-school activities and peer support predicted the developmental outcomes of mother-care children; gender, autonomous ability, and behavior control predicted the development of self-care children.
