Cost-effective method for reducing local failure of floodwalls verified by centrifuge tests

  • Hurricane Katrina swept New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, in 2005, causing more than 1,000 fatalities and severe damage to the flood protection system. Recovery activities are complete, however, clarifying failure mechanisms and devising resilient and cost-effective retrofitting techniques for the flood protection system are still of utmost importance to enhance the general structural integrity of water retaining structures. This study presents extensive centrifuge test results to find various failure mechanisms and effective retrofitting techniques for a levee system. The result confirmed the rotational failure and translational failure mechanisms for the London Ave. Canal levee and 17th St. Canal levee, respectively. In addition, it found that the floodwalls with fresh waterstop in their joints perform better than those with old/weathered waterstop by decreasing pore water pressure build-up in the levee. Structural caps placed on the top of the joints between I-walls could also prevent local failure by spreading the load to surrounding walls. At the same time, the self-sealing bentonite-sand mixture installed along the riverside of floodwalls could mitigate the failure of floodwalls by blocking the infiltration of seepage water into the gap formed between levee soils and floodwalls.

  • KEPCO's plan is undergoing a trial operation to replace the open-loop section with ring main units configuration where underground distribution lines are installed, by linking the multi-way circuit breakers auto (MCA) on the power side of each pad-mounted transformer. However, ring main units application mentioned above may cause the ripple effects, when implementing the configuration without a study of protection coordination. Because ring main units with classical pre-set protection devices contribution in fault condition didn't consider yet. For the reliable ring main units operation, it is necessary to resolve several protection issues such as the protection coordination with substation side, prevention of the transformer inrush current. These issues can radically deteriorate the distribution system reliability Hence, it is essential to design proper protection coordination to reduce these types of problems. This paper presents a scheme of ring main units' configuration and MCA's settings of time-current curves to preserve the performance of protection coordination among the switchgears considering constraints, e.g. prevention of the ripple effects (on the branch section when a transformer failure occurs and the mainline when a branch line failure occurs). It was confirmed that the propagation of the failure for each interrupter segment could be minimized by applying the proposed TCC and the interrupter settings for the MCAs (branch, transformer). Further, it was verified that the undetected area of the distribution automation system (DAS) could be supplemented by having the MCA configurated ring main units operate first, instead of the internal protection equipment in the transformer such as the fuse, STP when a transformer failure occurs.

  • Catastrophic failures in power systems are rare but not uncommon events. Protection systems play an important role in the progression of events during a catastrophic failure. This paper will examine some of the historical records, and suggest possible improvements to protection systems which can have a positive impact on power system performance during catastrophic failures.

  • In the system of underground transmission line, the rate of electrical failure is very low, but, if once occuring, the failure evolves into a paralysis of the system, the time of restoration is very long, the damage from stopping of power supply is very serious, and the cost of restoration is very great. Because of these problems, you must try to protect the system and equipment from every electrical failure by contributing much carefulness to the design and operation of the underground system. This study summerizes the results of simmulation tests about the effect of installing this protection device on the insulated joint box and the terminal end box.

  • 디지털 기술 기반의 차세대 변전시스템의 시스템 성능 검증을 위해 변전소 전력설비의 보호에 있어 가장 중요한 보호요소 중 하나인 차단기 실패 보호 IED를 대상으로 하는 IEC 61850 시스템 성능 시험 절차서를 구현하였다. 디지털 변전소에 대한 통신규격이 단일화되고 시스템이 디지털화됨에 따라 IED들은 상호 통신이 가능해지게 되었으며, 따라서 단일 IED의 전기 접점을 통해 이루어지던 예전의 시험방식에서 네트워크를 통한 시스템 차원의 시험방식으로 변화가 필요하게 되었다. 본 논문에서는 차단기 실패 보호 IED를 시스템적으로 시험할 수 있도록 UML을 이용한 성능시험절차서의 구현내용을 보여주고자 한다.

  • 본 연구는 공간정보를 활용하여 소방시설의 효율적인 관리 방안을 연구하고 관련 소방산업 발전을 위한 기초자료 구축을 목적으로 한다. 소방시설 관리의 오동작과 관리부실 등의 문제점을 극복하는 방안으로 공간정보를 소방시설 분야에 도입하고자 관련 법규와 소방시설의 공간정보 구축방안을 논의하였다. 소방시설의 효율적인 관리를 위하여 공간정보 기술을 포함하는 소방시설 관련 법률의 개정과 소방시설 공간정보의 표준화와 유효성, 일관성을 유지하는 것이 필요하다.

  • Recently, the load increasement and regenerative system of electrified railway system make a difficult to distinguish between the load current and fault current and it need a new intelligent protection system. The failure of traction system cause collapse of the other systems from high tension current. The over current from abnormal situation produces high tension current flow, high temperature are, voltage instability and current cutting, and break down railway systems. Protective system of traction system playa role of which detect and isolate failure points. In this paper, we proposed intelligent algorithm for discriminating normal and abnormal situation instead of the system being operated abnormally.

  • Digital reactor protection system which consists of many identical modules, is fault- tolerant to provide high safety. The modules themselves including DSP(digital signal processing) card are also fault-tolerant in nature. This paper assesses the safety for being-designed digital reactor protection system of 2-out-of-4 G structure with lockout. Some interesting design alternatives are compared. Fault tree analysis for assessing system safety is performed by Relex software. The selected reactor protection system fully satisfies EPRIURD stipulation of mean failure time of 50 years.

  • 본 논문에서는 엔진 비상보호시스템 구성 시 주요 고려 사항과 엔진 선행 개발 시험에서의 적용사례를 제시하였다. 액체로켓엔진 선행 개발 시험을 위해 적용된 비상보호시스템은 시험 중 발생한 모든 오작동 상황에서 오류 없이 작동하여 시험을 중지함으로써 추가적인 오작동의 전파를 방지하여 시험시제와 시험설비를 안전하게 보호하는 역할을 성공적으로 수행하였다. 본 연구 결과는 향후 엔진시험을 위한 비상보호시스템 개발 시 유용하게 활용될 것이다.

  • The safety and reliability of the power system short-circuit current, the short-circuit current depends on the failure to obtain the objective is to quickly eliminate the breaking capacity of the circuit-breaker selection of the cable, the insulation of electrical equipment and protective relay an important factor in determining the level correction and protective relay selection scheme to be meaningful. Standards used in the domestic circuit breaker is applied to the production of IEC standard, but the American National Standards (ANSI / IEEE) by NEMA specification of the fault current calculations and the application of the asymmetric coefficient Korea. Therefore, in this paper, the IEC 60909 standard IEC breaker fault current calculation method and the method for selection of system configurations reviewed and protection system for reviewing the configuration of various protective relays appropriate correction and the correction value is main protection, back-up protection the equipment so that the period of protection relay coordination to minimize accidents and accident protection to minimize interruptions proposed for cooperation.
