  • The objective of the present study is to evaluate the cyclic flexural behavior of a hybrid H-steel-reinforced concrete (HSRC) beam at the connection with a H-steel column. The test parameter investigated was the configuration of dowel bars at the joint region of the HSRC beam. The HSRC beam was designed to have plastic hinge at the end of the H-steel beam rather than the RC beam section near the joint. All specimens showed a considerable ductile behavior without a sudden drop of th applied load, resulting in the displacement ductility ratio exceeding 4.6, although an unexpected premature welding failure occurred at the flanges of H-steel beams connecting to H-steel column. The crack propagation in the RC beam region, flexural strength, and ductility of HSRC beam system were insignificantly affected by the configuration of dowel bars. The flexural strength of HSRC beam system governed by the yielding of H-steel beam could be conservatively evaluated from the assumption of a perfect plasticity state along the section.

  • Previous researches showed that confined concrete with Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP) sheets significantly improves the strength and ductility of concrete compared with unconfined concrete. However, the retrofit design of concrete with FRP materials requires an accurate estimate of the performance enhancement due to the confinement mechanism. The object of this research is to predict the compressive strength and strain of concrete confined with FRP wraps. For the purpose of this research, 102 test specimens were fabricated and loaded statically under uniaxial compression. Axial load, axial and lateral strains were investigated to predict the ultimate stress and strain. Also, to achieve reliability of proposed strength and strain models for FRP-confined concrete, another series of uniaxial compression test results were used. This paper presents strength and strain models for FRP-confined concrete. The proposed models to estimate the ultimate stresses and failure strains produce satisfactory predictions as compared to current design equations. In conclusion, it is proposed that the modified stress-strain model of concrete cylinders could be effectively used for the repair and retrofit of concrete columns.

  • As the common cast-in-place construction works fails to meet the enormous construction demand under rapid economic growth, the development of prefabricated structure instead becomes increasingly promising in China. For the prefabricated structure, its load carrying connection joint play a key role in maintaining the structural integrity. Therefore, a novel end plate bolt connecting joint between fully prefabricated pre-stressed concrete beam and high-strength reinforcement-confined concrete column was proposed. Under action of low cycle repeated horizontal loadings, comparative tests are conducted on 6 prefabricated pre-stressed intermediate joint specimens and 1 cast-in-place joint specimen to obtain the specimen failure modes, hysteresis curves, skeleton curves, ductility factor, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity and other seismic indicators, and the seismic characteristics of the new-type prefabricated beam-column connecting joint are determined. The test results show that all the specimens for end plate bolt connecting joint between fully prefabricated pre-stressed concrete beam and high-strength reinforcement-confined concrete column have realized the design objectives of strong column weak beam. The hysteretic curves for specimens are good, indicating desirable ductility and energy dissipation capacity and seismic performances, and the research results provide theoretical basis and technical support for the promotion and application of prefabricated assembly frames in the earthquake zone.

  • Objective : Pedicle screw fixation for spine arthrodesis is a useful procedure for the treatment of spinal disorders. However, instrument failure often occurs, and pedicle screw loosening is the initial step of a range of complications. The authors recently used a modified transpedicular polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) screw augmentation technique to overcome pedicle screw loosening. Here, they report on the laboratory testing of pedicle screws inserted using this modified technique. Methods : To evaluate pullout strengths three cadaveric spinal columns were used. Three pedicle screw insertion methods were utilized to compare pullout strength; the three methods used were; control (C), traditional transpedicular PMMA augmentation technique (T), and the modified transpedicular augmentation technique (M). After control screws had been pulled out, loosening with instrument was made. Screw augmentations were executed and screw pullout strength was rechecked. Results : Pedicle screws augmented using the modified technique for pedicle screw loosening had higher pullout strengths than the control ($1106.2{\pm}458.0N$ vs. $741.2{\pm}269.5N$; p=0.001). Traditional transpedicular augmentation achieved a mean pullout strength similar to that of the control group ($657.5{\pm}172.3N$ vs. $724.5{\pm}234.4N$; p=0.537). The modified technique had higher strength than the traditional PMMA augmentation technique ($1070.8{\pm}358.6N$ vs. $652.2{\pm}185.5N$; p=0.023). Conclusion : The modified PMMA transpedicular screw augmentation technique is a straightforward, effective surgical procedure for treating pedicle screw loosening, and exhibits greater pullout strength than traditional PMMA transpedicular augmentation. However, long-term clinical evaluation is required.

  • This paper evaluates the seismic response of multi-span prestressed concrete girder bridges typically found in the New Madrid Seismic Zone region of the central United States. Using detailed nonlinear analytical models and synthetic ground motion records for Memphis, TN, nonlinear response history analyses are performed for two levels of ground motion: 10% probability of exceedance (PE) in 50 years, and 2% probability of exceedance (PE) in 50 years. The results show that the bridge performance is very good fur the 10% PE in 50 years ground motion level. However, the performance for the 2% PE in 50 years ground motion is not so good because it results in highly inelastic behavior of the bridge. Impact between decks results in large ductility demands on the columns, and failure of the bearings that support the girders. It is found that making the superstructure continuous, which is commonly performed for reducing dead load moments and maintenance requirements, results in significant improvement in the seismic response of prestressed concrete girder bridges.

  • Recently, many high-rise reinforced concrete(RC) bearing-wall structures of multiple uses have been constructed, which have the irregularities of weak(or soft) story and torsion at the lower stories simultaneously. The study stated herein was performed to investigate seismic performance of such a high-rise RC structure through a series of shaking table tests of a 1: 12 model. Based on the observations of the test results, the conclusions are drawn as follows: 1) Accidental torsion due to the uncertainty on the properties of structure can be reasonably predicted by using the dynamic analysis than by using lateral force procedure. 2) The mode coupled by translation and torsion induced the overturning moments not only in the direction of excitations but also in the perpendicular direction: The axial forces in columns due to this transverse overturning moment cannot be adequately predicted using the existing mode analysis technique, and 3) the hysteretic curve and the strength diagram between base shear and torque(BST) clearly reveal the predominant mode of vibrations and the failure mode.

  • In this study, the SBC system, a new mechanical joint method, was developed to improve the constructability of precast concrete (PC) beam-column connections. The reliability of the finite element analysis model was verified through the comparison of experimental results and FEM analysis results. Recently, the intermediate moment frame, a seismic force resistance system, has served as a ramen structure that resists seismic force through beams and columns and has few load-bearing walls, so it is increasingly being applied to PC warehouses and PC factories with high loads and long spans. However, looking at the existing PC beam-column anchorage details, the wire, strand, and lower main bar are overlapped with the anchorage rebar at the end, so they do not satisfy the joint and anchorage requirements for reinforcing bars (KDS 41 17 00 9.3). Therefore, a mechanical joint method (SBC) was developed to meet the relevant standards and improve constructability. Tensile and bending experiments were conducted to examine structural performance, and a finite element analysis model was created. The load-displacement curve and failure pattern confirmed that both the experimental and analysis results were similar, and it was verified that a reliable finite element analysis model was built. In addition, bending tests showed that the larger the thickness of the bolt joint surface of the SBC, the better its structural performance. It was also determined that the system could improve energy dissipation ability and ductility through buckling and yielding occurring in the SBC.

  • This paper presents the analytical results for the prediction of elastical local buckling stress of fiber reinforced plastic (orthotropic) structural shapes manufactured from pultrusion process. In the derivation, existing Bleich's approach which was originally derived for the isotropic structural shapes was extended and non-dimensionalized parameters which can simplify the numerical calculations were adopted. Analytical results were compared with reported closed-form solutions and experimental results. It is graphically shown that the results can be used effectively to predict the local buckling stress of pultruded fiber reinforced plastic structural shapes. Numerical results were presented graphically to estimate the local buckling stress of various cross-sectional dimensions and lengths of columns. In addition, limits of width to thickness ratio of flange and web of pultruded structural shapes were suggested in which material failure or overall buckling occurs prior to local buckling.

  • In this study, It is developed a retrofitting procedure of RC column with rectangular section to archive the target displacement at failure. Nonlinear behavior of the column is considered as the equivalent linear system. First, target displacement is determined, and then elastic displacement spectrum is constructed to estimate the equivalent natural vibration period of the SDOF system. After natural vibration period is determined, required strength is calculated using secant stiffness based on the mass of system. In accordance with, obtained force-displacement relationship through non-linear fiber based section analysis, retrofit design was carried out to meet required strength. As a result, retrofitted RC column can confirm that the improved seismic performance. It is observed that the proposed design procedure can be applicable to seismic retrofitting design of columns.
