  • The roller rig tester for safety performance evaluation of wheel derailment is a test facility which can give the test load condition to the test wheel, similar to the actual dynamic condition in actual running condition. This study describes the evaluation result on the durability of the resilient wheel equipped with the ring damper and the damping material, and installed in the half part of a full scaled bogie in combination with the primary spring when it rotates under the dynamic condition. The evaluation result on durability of resilient wheel after load test of 2 million cycles shows that the safety of wheel is not affected by the applied load in visual inspection and nondestructive test, however, in the bolt used for fastening the ring damper to the wheel the loosening was found. Accordingly the use of self-locking nut and washer is recommended.

  • In the new Seoul-Busan high speed railroad construction specially in area of city center passage the roadbed establishment is recommended the staibility for the existing subway tunnel segments of Busan subway 1st and 2nd lines regarding the appearance condition, a quality condition and the durability of the objective facility, and it evaluates the numerical analysis using MIDAS/GTS which leads the stability of the objective facility and investigatesd tunnels. Fundamental issues in tunneling under high groundwater table are discussed and the effect of groundwater on tunnel excavation was examined using a 3D stress-pore pressure coupled Finite-Element Method. Based on the results the interaction mechanism between the tunnelling and groundwater is identified. In the both of 1st and 2nd Line the maximum sinkage, unequal sinkage and the lining stress from numerical analysis are within permission and the damage degree is appearing to be disregarded. But it enforces necessary Pre-grouting in order to minimize an actual tunnel face conduct and when the tunnel is excavated it is also necessary to minimize the outflow possibility.

  • The design of Prototype Gen-IV Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor (PGSFR) has been developed and the validation and verification (V&V) activities to demonstrate the system performance and safety are in progress. In this paper, the current status of test activities is described briefly and significant results are discussed. The large-scale sodium thermal-hydraulic test program, Sodium Test Loop for Safety Simulation and Assessment-1 (STELLA-1), produced satisfactory results, which were used for the computer codes V&V, and the performance test results of the model pump in sodiumshowed good agreement with those in water. The second phase of the STELLA program with the integral effect tests facility, STELLA-2, is in the detailed design stage of the design process. The sodium thermal-hydraulic experiment loop for finned-tube sodium-to-air heat exchanger performance test, the intermediate heat exchanger test facility, and the test facility for the reactor flow distribution are underway. Flow characteristics test in subchannels of a wire-wrapped rod bundle has been carried out for safety analysis in the core and the dynamic characteristic test of upper internal structure has been performed for the seismic analysis model for the PGSFR. The performance tests for control rod assemblies (CRAs) have been conducted for control rod drive mechanism driving parts and drop tests of the CRA under scram condition were performed. Finally, three types of inspection sensors under development for the safe operation of the PGSFR were explained with significant results.

  • In general, the daily safety inspection activities, which investigate damages in structures and measures the size of the damage, have been relied heavily on the visual inspection so far. Since the probe of the condition and performance of facilities by such personnel is often dependent on the subjective judgment of the investigator, the consistency and repeatability of the probing results may reduce. Particularly, damage located in a difficult-to-reach place depends mainly on experience with the naked eye, and an unsafe method using a ladder has mainly applied when necessary. Therefore, in this study, we tried to propose a way of using images that can reduce the deviation between safety inspection investigators, enhance objectivity, and improve the safety of workers. In this study, we have applied homographic transformation as a method of correcting the image. As a result of analyzing the size of the damage in the corrected image of the test subject, it confirms that the accuracy of measuring the magnitude of the damage can satisfy the target levels of 5.0mm and 0.005m2, the target accuracy levels. As a result of the field verification test to which the proposed image correction technique applied, the coefficient of variation of the crack length in the structure decreased from 5.4~7.0% to 0.072~0.12%, and that of the damaged area from 10.9% to 1.6%. It confirms that the measurement accuracy is improved. Therefore, it is expected that this study on the image utilization technique in safety inspection activities can increase the accuracy of damage measurement and improve the reliability of the safety inspection reports and exterior survey drawings.

  • Recently, concrete facility as advanced water treatment facilities is extending in the water treatment facilities according to raise awareness of pure drinking water and delicious water. For this reason, it is increased to the necessity need to make the standard and the development of waterproofing and anti-corrosion materials for concrete structures applied water treatment tank. So, related research has become active recently. However, as the limit of research focused on durability improvement of top coating material, it is insufficient to study on the adhesion strength between the concrete surface and primer. Therefore, there is to confirm the adhesion of between concrete surface and the three primers used as anti-corrosion waterproofing materials, and to investigate the properties of adhesion strength according to the condition such as dry condition, wet condition, and water pressure condition of the concrete surface in this study.

  • Effects of residual flux density M$_{res}$ and number of inspection on the detection voltage and flux density B of the gas pipeline were investigated in MFL inspection, which is widely used for the non-destructive inspection in a gas pipeline. A simulation equipment composed of the magnetizer and iron ring attached on an aluminum disc was constructed instead of a huge gas pipeline facility. With this system. the iron ring could be perfectly demagnetized and signals from the bolt screw stuck on the disc could be clearly detected so that the effects of M$_{res}$S and the inspection number on the detection voltage and B of iron ring were effectively investigated. With increasing the number of inspection, M$_{res}$, B of the iron ring and the detection voltage decreased and then kept at constant values while final M$_{res}$ increased with increasing initial M$_{res}$. If inspection condition were kept unchanged, the detection voltage was proportional to the last M$_{res}$ of the iron ring instead of B. This was probably due to magnetic hysteresis of the iron ring inherited from magnetic domain so that consideration on the magnetic hysteresis was inevitable in the analysis of MFL signal from defects of a gas pipeline. A new inspection scheme using the magnetizer with reversed magnetization in the subsequent inspection was proposed from the result that a high detection voltage could be obtained in the first inspection of gas pipeline with positive M$_{res}$.

  • The definition of an apartment is a building more than 5 stories high and which is the standard law. Currently, the number of apartments is increasing much faster than detached houses. Owning an apartment is a normal trend these days. However, the increasing number of apartments has been increasing the number of apartment fires which also has been making social problems. Therefore, this study was conducted for the fire extinguisher among other fire facilities because it is important for initial fire suppression. The research subject is on the fire extinguisher that is in the underground parking lot of 40 apartment complexes which are more than 10 stories. Survey and analysis were conducted for 80 fire extinguishers. There are two fire extinguishers for each apartment. The result of this study is that all installed fire extinguishers are ABC dry chemical type, 92% of them is 3.3kg and that meet the legal height(less than 1.5m). However, the condition such as appearance, inspection, manufactured year, appearance of signs, material of signs, size of signs, etc. was insufficiency. So improvement of law and system that are fire facility construction, maintenance implementation and additional designation of type approval about sign will be needed in my opinion.

  • In Korea, the number of national facilities for which a safety inspection is mandatory is increasing, and a safer safety inspection method is needed. This study aimed to increase the efficiency of the bridge safety inspection by enabling rapid exterior inspection while securing the safety of inspectors by using drones to perform the safety inspections of bridges, which had mainly relied on visual inspections. For the research, the Youngjong Grand Bridge in Incheon was selected as a test bed and was divided into four parts: the warren truss, suspension bridge main cable, main tower, and pier. It was possible to establish a five-step standard procedure for drone safety inspections. The step-by-step contents of the standard procedure obtained as a result of this research are: Step 1, facility information collection and analysis, Step 2, analysis of vulnerable parts and drone flight planning, Step 3, drone photography and data processing, Step 4, condition evaluation by external inspection, Step 5, building of external inspection diagram and database. Therefore, if the safety inspections of civil engineering facilities including bridges are performed according to this standard procedure, it is expected that these inspection can be carried out more systematically and efficiently.

  • This study was conducted to analyze field inspection results of erosion control facilities within national forests and to suggest maintenance and management plan of erosion control facilities. The objects amounted to a total of 1,628 locations, comprising 308 erosion control dams and 1,320 erosion control areas (1,269.05 ha). The field inspections were conducted during March-June each year. The erosion control dams inspected were constructed during 1991-2005, with 96.4% of them, or 297 dams, constructed in or after 2000. The erosion control areas were constructed during 1986-2005, with 68.6% of them, or 903 areas, constructed in or after 2000. As for erosion control dams, there were 205 concrete erosion control dams and 68 concrete with boulder pitching erosion control dams, respectively, with 296 out of a total of 308 erosion control dams in a good condition. As for erosion control areas, there were many erosion control structures using stone masonry works and gabions, with 1,245 out of a total of 1,320 (94.3%) erosion control areas in a good condition. Overall, erosion control facilities within national forests were in a good condition, amply fulfilling their functions. As for erosion control facilities in a bad condition, they must be made to accomplish the goals of erosion control works through supplementation and repairs without fail. In addition, for the systematic maintenance and management of existing erosion control facilities and erosion control facilities constructed in the future as part of erosion control works, the construction of an erosion control facility management system is urgently needed.
