  • This study carried out to investigate selection response of pure line population of layer chicken. Data for two layer pure line of Single Comb White Leghorn were collected from 1986 to 1991. Primary selection criteria were egg number to 270 days of age (EN270), egg weight(BW270), body weight (BW270) at 270 days of age and the days of the 1st egg(SM). The results obtained in this study are summarized as follows ; 1. Mean phenotypic values of two strains were decreased by 1.94 day(K), 1.320ay(F) for SM and increased by 0.09g(K), -0.05g(F) for EW 270 and 0.56(K), -0.78(F) for EN270. 2. The ratio of a realized selection differential to expected selection differentials for SM (sexual maturity), EW 270, and BW 270 were not significantly decreased during 5 generations. 3. Heritability were estimated from sib analysis. The means of estimates were 0.28(F), 0.39(K) for BW270, and 0.25(F), 0.29(K) for EN270 and 0.51(F), 0.48(K) for EW270. 4. The genetic gains were estimated by method of selection index in retrospect on the basis of selection differentials. EN270 and EW270 were found to increase by 2.01(F), 2.25(K) and 0.54 (F), 0.65(K) per generation.

  • This study was performed to evaluate single and repeated-dose toxicities of Bee Venom Extracts (F1, F3) in Spraque-Dawley. F1 was injected subcutaneously to rat at dose levels of 0, 0.0002, 0.002, 0.02 mg/kg/day for single-dose toxicity study and repeated-dose toxicity study. F3 was injected subcutaneously to rat at dose level of 0, 0.003, 0.03, 0.3 mg/kg/day for single-dose toxicity study and repeated-dose toxicity study. In both studies, there were no dose related changes in mortality, clinical sign, body weight change, food and water consumption, opthalmoscopy, organ weights, urine analysis, biochemical examination, and hematological findings of all animals treated with Bee Venom (F1, F3). Gross and histopathological findings revealed no evidence of specific toxicity related to Bee Venom (F1, F3). These results suggest that the subcutaneous NOEL (No Observed Effect Level) of Bee Venom (F1, F3) may be over F1 -0.02 mg/kg, F3-0.3 mg/kg.

  • The fundamental frequency, or f0, is an important acoustic measure in the prosody of human speech. The current study examined the f0 distribution of a corpus of spontaneous speech in order to provide normative data for Korean speakers. The corpus consists of 40 speakers talking freely about their daily activities and their personal views. Praat scripts were created to collect f0 values, and a majority of obvious errors were corrected manually by watching and listening to the f0 contour on a narrow-band spectrogram. Statistical analyses of the f0 distribution were conducted using R. The results showed that the f0 values of all the Korean speakers were right-skewed, with a pointy distribution. The speakers produced spontaneous speech within a frequency range of 274 Hz (from 65 Hz to 339 Hz), excluding statistical outliers. The mode of the total f0 data was 102 Hz. The female f0 range, with a bimodal distribution, appeared wider than that of the male group. Regression analyses based on age and f0 values yielded negligible R-squared values. As the mode of an individual speaker could be predicted from the median, either the median or mode could serve as a good reference for the individual f0 range. Finally, an analysis of the continuous f0 points of intonational phrases revealed that the initial and final segments of the phrases yielded several f0 measurement errors. From these results, we conclude that an examination of a spontaneous speech corpus can provide linguists with useful measures to generalize acoustic properties of f0 variability in a language by an individual or groups. Further studies would be desirable of the use of statistical measures to secure reliable f0 values of individual speakers.

  • Previous epidemiological studies reported that significant muscle loss is observed with advancing aging, called sarcopenia. This study is to investigate the effects of treatment dumbbell exercise on prevention of sarcopenia. The subjects were elderly between 60~70 years old who participated in J-Welfare senior center exercise program at J-gu in S-city and divided into control group(N=19) and exercise group(N=8). Treatment dumbbell exercise was performed 2 times per week for 12 weeks and body composition, fitness, and blood lipid profiles were measured before and after this program. There was no significance in body fat before and after 12 weeks of treatment dumbbell exercise, but there was significance in weight(F=4.312, p=0.048), BMI(F=4.532, p=0.043), and FFM(F=4.743, p=0.039). There was no significance in fitness such as arm curl(F=1.103, p=0.304), and back scratch(F=0.214, p=0.648), but there was significance in 2-minute step(F=33.638, p<0.001), chair stand(F=14.575, p=0.001), chair sit and reach(F=7.198, p=0.013), and 8-ft up and go(F=14.890, p=0.001). The variables of blood lipid profiles such as TC(F=0.030, p=0.864), TG(F=0.142, p=0.710), HDL(F=2.066, p=0.163), glucose (F=0.125, p=0.727), and HbA1c(F=0.945, p=0.340) has no significance. It was found that treatment dumbbell exercise has positive effects on body composition and fitness but has no positive effects on blood lipid profiles of the elderly.

  • Let 𝓐 be the collection of analytic functions f defined in 𝔻 := {ξ ∈ ℂ : |ξ| < 1} such that f(0) = f'(0) - 1 = 0. Using the concept of subordination (≺), we define $$S^*_{\ell}\;:=\;\{f{\in}A:\;\frac{{\xi}f^{\prime}({\xi})}{f({\xi})}{\prec}{\Phi}_{\ell}(\xi)=1+{\sqrt{2}{\xi}}+{\frac{{\xi}^2}{2}},\;{\xi}{\in}{\mathbb{D}}\}$$, where the function 𝚽(ξ) maps 𝔻 univalently onto the region Ω bounded by the limacon curve (9u2 + 9v2 - 18u + 5)2 - 16(9u2 + 9v2 - 6u + 1) = 0. For 0 < r < 1, let 𝔻r := {ξ ∈ ℂ : |ξ| < r} and 𝒢 be some geometrically defined subfamily of 𝓐. In this paper, we find the largest number 𝜌 ∈ (0, 1) and some function f0 ∈ 𝒢 such that for each f ∈ 𝒢 𝓛f (𝔻r) ⊂ Ω for every 0 < r ≤ 𝜌, and $${\mathcal{L} _{f_0}}({\partial}{\mathbb{D}_{\rho})\;{\cap}\;{\partial}{\Omega}_{\ell}\;{\not=}\;{\emptyset}$$, where the function 𝓛f : 𝔻 → ℂ is given by $${\mathcal{L}}_f({\xi})\;:=\;{\frac{{\xi}f^{\prime}(\xi)}{f(\xi)}},\;f{\in}{\mathcal{A}}$$. Moreover, certain graphical illustrations are provided in support of the results discussed in this paper.

  • Previous studies showed that the voice onset time (VOT) of aspirated and lenis stops has been merged, and post-stop fundamental frequency (F0) has emerged as a primary cue to distinguish the two stops in the younger generation and female speech. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that VOT merger in aspirated and lenis stops occurs after an F0 difference between the two stops becomes stabilized. In other words, unless post-stop F0, which is a redundant feature, is fully developed, it is hard for VOT merger to happen. Females have got a stable F0 difference in stops earlier than males. Therefore, VOT merger could happen, and as a result, females could take the lead in changing from VOT to F0 in initial stops. This study also shows that speakers who acquired F0 as a primary cue use F0 to the full to distinguish lenis stops from two other stops (aspirated and fortis).

  • This study aims to examine whether the fundamental frequency (F0) varies depending on languages or distinguishes between L1 (first language) and L2 (second language) speech and whether the type of materials which vary in control of consonant voicing affects the use of F0-especially, mean F0. For this purpose, we compared productions of two languages produced by Korean L2 learners of English to those of Korean-English bilingual speakers. Twelve Korean L2 speakers of English and twelve Korean-English bilingual speakers participated in this study. The subjects read aloud 22 declarative sentences-balanced and unbalanced-once in English and once in Korean. Mean F0 of Korean was higher than that of English for both speaker groups, and the difference in the value of mean F0 between the Korean and English sentences was different depending on the type of materials that the participants read. With regard to F0 range, the L2 speakers had a larger F0 range in English than in Korean; however, the effect of language on F0 range was not statistically significant for the bilingual speakers. These results indicate that language-specific properties may affect the use of F0, in particular, mean F0.

  • The present thesis examines the correlation of VOT and F0 in the three-way distinction of Korean obstruents, conducting production and perception tests. In the production test, one female native speaker of Korean with a Seoul dialect (the author) recorded 15 repetitions of a monosyllabic word list including /ka, kha, k*a, pa, pha, p*a, ta, tha, t*a, ca, cha, c*a/ in random order, VOT and F0 of the following vowels were measured, and the result was significant for the three-way distinction with a strong correlation between VOT and F0, and also in the VOT-F0 plot, no overlapping among the domains was observed. As for the perception test, I manipulated the data recorded in the production test, heightening or lowering their F0 values. In all, 14 subjects (seven males and seven females) participated in the identification test. The result was as follows: the fortis stimuli were not influenced by F0 changes, and the VOT and F0 values at the lenis-aspirated boundary were negatively correlated. From these results I concluded the following: 1) VOT and F0 can distinguish the three domains of Korean obstruents without overlapping; 2) the fortis perception does not need F0 as its acoustic cue; and 3) VOT and F0 in the distinction between the lenis and aspirated are in the phonetic trading relation[2].

  • Suppose f belongs to the Bloch space with f(0) = 0. For 0 < r < 1 and 0 < p < ∞, we show that $$M_p(r,\,f)\,=\,({\frac{1}{2\pi}}{\int_{0}^{2\pi}}\,{\mid}f(re^{it}){\mid}^pdt)^{1/p}\,{\leq}\,({\frac{{\Gamma}(\frac{p}{2}+1)}{{\Gamma}(\frac{p}{2}+1-k)}})^{1/p}\,{\rho}{\mathcal{B}}(log\frac{1}{1-r^2})^{1/2},$$ where ρʙ(f) = supz∈ⅅ(1 - |z|2)|f'(z)| and k is the integer satisfying 0 < p - 2k ≤ 2. Moreover, we prove that for 0 < r < 1 and p > 1, $${\parallel}f_r{\parallel}_{B_q}\,{\leq}\,r\,{\rho}{\mathcal{B}}(f)(\frac{1}{(1-r^2)(q-1)})^{1/q},$$ where fr(z) = f(rz) and ||·||ʙq is the Besov seminorm given by ║f║ʙq = (∫𝔻 |f'(z)|q(1-|z|2)q-2dA(z)). These results improve previous results of Clunie and MacGregor.
