This paper explores the impact of the external workers on employment performance in Korea, using Workplace Panel Survey (WPS). I find the use of external workers, e.g., temporary agency workers, in-subcontract workers, and contract workers, is mainly negatively related with employment performance. Especially the use of in-subcontract workers and contract workers is negatively related with the job creation rate of standard workers and the net growth rate of internal workers. The results show the existence of a substitute effect between the use of internal and external workers.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) proposes 11 industries that handle Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) that are considered to need management. A water treatment facility is one of the above industries that takes in groundwater and produces drinking water through a water treatment process. Groundwater can accumulate natural radionuclides such as uranium and thorium in raw water by contacting rocks or soil containing natural radionuclides. Therefore, there is a possibility that workers in water treatment facilities will be exposed due to the accumulation of natural radionuclides in the water treatment process. The goal of this study is to evaluate the external radiation dose according to the working type of workers in water treatment facilities. In order to achieve the above goal, the study was conducted by dividing it into 1) analysis of the exposure environment, 2) measurement of the external radiation dose rate 3) evaluation of the external radiation dose. In the stage of analyzing the exposure environment, major processes that are expected to occur significantly were derived. In the measurement stage of the external radiation dose rate, a map of the external radiation dose rate was prepared by measuring the spatial radiation dose rate in major processes. Through this, detailed measurement points were selected considering the movement of workers. In the external radiation dose evaluation stage, the external radiation dose was evaluated based on the previously derived external radiation dose rate and working time. As a result of measuring the external radiation dose rate at the detailed points of water treatment facilities A to C, it was 1.90×10-1 to 3.75×100 μSv h-1, and the external radiation dose was analyzed as 3.27×10-3 to 9.85×10-2 mSv y-1. The maximum external radiation dose appeared during the disinfection and cleaning of activated carbon at facility B, and it is judged that natural radionuclides were concentrated in activated carbon. It was found that the external radiation dose of workers in the water treatment facility was less than 1mSv y-1, which is about 10% of the dose limit for the public. As a result of this study, it was found that the radiological effect of external radiation dose of domestic water treatment facility workers was insignificant. The results are expected to contribute as background data to present optimized safety management measures for domestic NORM industries in the future.
Background: Delivery workers repeatedly get in and out of trucks and walk or run to deliver packages during work. Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is a well-known non-traumatic overuse injury of the lateral side of the knee caused by frequent knee flexion and extension. Hip muscle strength is among the factors that prevent lower extremity injuries. Although many studies have examined the relationship between ITBS and hip muscle strengths, there was no study comparing hip muscle strength and ratio between delivery workers with and without ITBS. Objects: This study aimed to compare hip muscle strength and hip internal/external rotator and adductor/abductor strength ratios between delivery workers with and without ITBS. Methods: Fourteen delivery workers with ITBS matched inclusion criteria in the present study among 20 participants. Because total sample size was required 28 subjects by G*power program (ver. 3.1.9.4; University of Trier), 14 delivery workers without ITBS were recruited. Hip muscle strengths were measured in a side-lying position using a Smart KEMA pulling sensor (KOREATECH Co. Ltd.). An independent t-test was used to compare hip muscle strengths and hip internal/external rotator and hip adductor/abductor strength ratios between delivery workers with and without ITBS. Results: The adductor/abductor strength ratio was significantly greater in delivery workers without ITBS than in those with ITBS (p < 0.05). The strengths of the hip abductor, hip adductor, hip internal rotator, hip external rotator, and the ratio of internal/external rotator strengths were not significantly different between the delivery workers with and without ITBS (p > 0.05). Conclusion: This study's findings showed that delivery workers with ITBS had significantly lesser adductor/abductor strength ratio, while the strengths of the hip abductor and adductor muscles did not differ significantly. These results suggest that adductor/abductor strength ratio should be considered when evaluating and treating ITBS in delivery workers.

This research attempts to verify the hypothesis that the workers in the small-and medium-sized industries use more informal information channels than formal ones do to get the information necessary to industrial activities. Information sources are divided by the internal and the external ones and these are sub-divided by their acquiring channels, publishers and holding institutions. It is intended to investigate the information sources according to the use frequency, age, origin and format of documents used. The degree of benefit to the workers in their practical work through the use of information sources and the use frequency of information sources by the department and years of experience are also investigated. The data to test the hypothesis was collected through the questionnaires distributed to the workers in 300 sampled firms from June 5 to June 20, The following facts have been verified as the result : 1. Workers in industries acquire information mainly through the contacts with the colleagues or superiors in their departments, and the junior workers depend more on the colleague and superiors than senior workers are. 2. Among the documents published internally, the ones from the research and development departments are mostly used. The documents issued by the worker's own departments are also frequently used and the senior workers, the more frequently use the internal publications than the junior workers do. 3. Among the internal documents stored in various places in the industries, the documents kept in the worker's own departments are used most frequently. The senior workers the more use privately owned documents than the junior workers do. 4. As far as the external channels are concerned, information is obtained mainly through suppliers of equipment and raw materials and the use frequency of information channels varies according to department. The senior workers the more receive information through supporting institution, seminar and exhibition than the junior workers do. 5. Among the external publication, the ones published by the industrial supporting institutions are heavily used and the workers in research and developments frequently use the external publications. 6. The documents held in governmental industrial institutions and industrial supporting institutions are heavily used compared with the ones stored in other external institutions. The holding places of frequently used documents vary according to the working departments. 7. The degree of benefit to practical work performance resulted from the internal information use is less than by the use of external information. 8. The documents published more than five years ago are more used than the ones of less than five years, Korean and Japanese documents are used frequently and catalogues, patents and standards are used to a great extent. The documents are used differently in accordance with work departments.
Background: External-cause mortality is an important public health issue worldwide. Considering its significance to workers' health and inequalities across industries, we aimed to describe the state of external-cause mortality and investigate its difference by industry in Republic of Korea based on data for 2018. Methods: Data obtained from the Statistics Korea and Korean Employment Information System were used. External causes of death were divided into three categories (suicide, transport accident, and others), and death occurred during employment period or within 90 days after unemployment was regarded as workers' death. We calculated age- and sex-standardized mortalities per 100,000, standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) compared to the general population and total workers, and mortality rate ratios (RRs) across industries using information and communication as a reference. Correlation analyses between income, education, and mortality were conducted. Results: Age- and sex-standardized external-cause mortality per 100,000 in all workers was 29.4 (suicide: 16.2, transport accident: 6.6, others: 6.6). Compared to the general population, all external-cause and suicide SMRs were significantly lower; however, there was no significant difference in transport accidents. When compared to total workers, wholesale, transportation, and business facilities management showed higher SMR for suicide, and agriculture, forestry, and fishing, mining and quarrying, construction, transportation and storage, and public administration and defense showed higher SMR for transport accidents. A moderate to strong negative correlation was observed between education level and mortality (both age- and sex-standardized mortality rates and SMR compared to the general population). Conclusion: Inequalities in external-cause mortalities from suicide, transport accidents, and other causes were found. For reducing the differences, improved policies are needed for industries with higher mortalities.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among organization-public relationships, external reputation and job satisfaction of workers in small and medium-sized IT enterprises. The subjects were 221 workers in small and medium-sized IT enterprises selected. The data were analyzed by the exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, correlation analysis, reliability analysis and structural equation modeling analysis using IBM SPSS 21 program and IBM AMOS 21 program. The results were as follow. First, Organization-public relationships influenced positively on external reputation. Second, Organization-public relationships influenced not significantly on job satisfaction of workers in small and medium-sized IT enterprises. Third, External reputation influenced positively on job satisfaction of workers in small and medium-sized IT enterprises. These results will contribute to provide implications related to organization effectiveness.

External wall cleaning is a task that is currently being performed by human workers. The recent surge in the number of high-rise buildings has led to such problems as difficulties in cleaning the wall, high risk to the specialized workers, and increased maintenance expenses. As a fundamental measure to perform external wall cleaning work in a safer manner, automation/mechanization has been on the rise. This research aims to classify façade types and analyze the performance requirements of a wall-cleaning robot, as preliminary research to develop a wall-cleaning robot. The replacement of specialized workers with robots is expected to improve both safety for workers and quality of cleaning.
Purpose: This study identified the influence of hotel workers' emotional labor and social support on their intentions to change jobs. Methods: Study participants were 437 workers from seven hotels in Korea who consented to the survey. Among them, insufficient responses from 21 participants were excluded, as well as 107 responses from workers with workloads of under one hour of face to face work. Thus, 309 hotel workers were included in the final analysis. A multivariate regression analysis was used to identify factors influencing the hotel workers' intention to change jobs. Results: The intention to change jobs was high when external behavior was shown, and workers who received social support from a superior exhibited low intention of changing jobs. Conclusion: The study results show that the most influential variables of turnover intention are external behavior and the support of a superior. It is therefore important to educate managers on personnel management methods for reducing external behaviors so that the rate of job changes by hotel workers can be reduced. It is also necessary to prepare and manage measures for strengthening the support system by workplace superiors.
The workers of limestone industry have relatively higher rate of accident and injury than other industry workers. This survey was conducted to provide the informations for the planning of safety and health educations to prevent the accident and injury. The purpose of this study is to identify the morbidity rate per month and to determine the related health factors, and to find accident experiences of the limestone workers and to analyze the reasons and types of that accidents. The study design was a descriptive survey. Self reporting questionnaires developed by researcher were used for data collection. The subjects of this study were 225 workers in limestone industries in Jecheon city. The statistical methods utilized for data analysis were frequency analysis, $x^2$-test with SPSS-pc(ver.9.0). The results are as follows, 1. The workers morbidity rate per month was 22%, and morbid factors were Flu., G-I trouble, hypertension, orthopedic trauma, external wound, burn, etc., and the related health factors are self-assessment for health, exercise, accessability for medical facilities. 2. 40% of the subjects have experienced the accidents during last 6 months. The types of the accidents were safety violations, traffic accidents and fire accidents. Injury types were external wounds, fracture/amputation and burn. The workers of limestone industry have higher morbidity rate and experiences of accidents. Therefore the more increased safety and health educations than now for both the workers and the managers are needed. And this study could be helpful to increase the quality and the quantity of the educations needed.
The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of the organizational characteristic and workers characteristics of Family Business Organization on its Business Performance. The subjects of this study were workers of healthy family support centers and multicultural family support centers. A survey was conducted from July 30th to September 30th. A total 372 materials were used for analysis of final data and SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) WIN 18.0 program was employed in analyzing the collected data. As the result of analysing the effect of organizational characteristics and culture and characteristics of workers on business performance through hierarchical regression analysis, higher performance was achieved when the agency's organizational culture has the characteristics of a developed culture, and when the operating body is a school principal corporation rather than a non-profit corporation, and in the city rather than farming town, having enough information and external resources at the center, and when the job satisfaction of workers are high, and when organizational culture is more hierarchical. There were difference in the result of analysing the effect of organizational characteristic and culture and characteristic of workers on business performance. The level of service and business value of Family Service Organization was higher when the agency's organizational culture has the characteristics of a developed culture, hierarchical culture and agreement culture, and when operating body is a school principal corporation rather than a non-profit corporation, having enough information and external resources at the center, and the administrative skills of workers are higher. Business volume is increased when the operating body is a school principal corporation rather than a non-profit corporation, and in the city rather than farming town, and when the agency's organizational culture has the characteristics of hierarchical culture and agreement culture, having enough external resources at the center, and the practicing ability of workers are higher. When it comes to business efficiency, it is increased when the agency's organizational culture has the characteristics of developed culture and the job satisfaction of workers are high, having enough external and financial resources at the center. Therefore we will need to enhance business performance through improved management and job satisfaction of employees in organizational culture.
