  • The structural design of offshore installations against explosions has been required to protect vital areas (e.g. control room, worker's area etc.) and minimize the damage from explosion accidents. Because the explosion accident will not only result in significant casualties and economic losses, but also cause serious pollution and damage to surrounding environment and coastal marine ecosystems. Over the past two decades, an incredible efforts was made to develop reliable methods to reduce and manage the explosion risk. Among the methods Quantitative Risk Assessment and Management (QRA&M) is the one of cutting-edge technologies. The explosion risk can be quantitatively assessed by the product of explosion frequency based on probability calculation and consequence analyzed using computer simulations, namely Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). However to obtain reliable consequence analysis results by CFD and FEA, uncertainties associate with modeling and simulation are needed to be identified and validated by comparison with experimental data. Therefore, large-scaled explosion test procedure is developed in this study. And developed test procedure can be helpful to obtain precious test data for the validation of consequence analysis using computer simulations, and subsequently allow better assessment and management of explosion risks.

  • Air gun shock system is used as an alternative energy source as part of the attempt to overcome the restrictions of economical expense and environmental damage, etc., due to the use of explosives for the UNDerwater EXplosion (UNDEX) shock test. The objectivity of this study is to develop the simulation technique of air gun shock test for the design of model-scale one for the near field non-explosive UNDEX test through its verification with full-scale SERCEL shock test result. Underwater blasting response analysis of full-scale air gun shock test was carried out using highly advanced M&S (Modeling & Simulation) system of FSI (Fluid-Structure Interaction) analysis technique of LS-DYNA code, and was verified by comparing its shock characteristics and behaviors with the results of air gun shock test.

  • This study suggests the design and assembly drawing of the prefabricated precast concrete arch ammo magazines using the numerical analysis as well as the explosion verification test. The protective capacity of the proposed magazines is identified with the maximum support rotation angles measured by explosion verification tests according to the U.S. Unified Facility Criteria 3-340-02. Using numerical analysis, it is examined that oval-type members are better than the semi-circle ones in terms of protective capacity. Based on this numerical results, the design and assemble drawing for the prefabricated precast concrete arch ammo magazine are developed. It is identified that the structure constructed by invented design and assembly drawing has enough protective capacity against blast pressure caused by 133.75kg TNT explosion. The detonation point cannot be open due to the military security. In sum, it could be concluded that the ammo magazine proposed in this study has reliable protective capacity with enough redundancy. The redundancy means that there are more economic design approach with reducing the curved wall thickness.

  • In an automated industry PLC plays a central role to control the automation system. Therefore, fault free operation of PLC controlled automation system is essential in order to maximize a firm's productivity. A prior test of control system is a practical way to check fault operations, but it is a time consuming job and can not check all possible fault operation. A formal verification of PLC program could be a best way to check all possible fault situation. Tracing the history of the study on formal verification, we found three problems, the first is that a formal representation of PLC control system is incomplete, the second is a state explosion problem and the third is that the verification result is difficult to use for the correction of control program. In this paper, we propose a transformation method to reproduce the control system correctly in formal model and efficient procedure to verify and correct the control program using verification result. To demonstrate the proposed method, we provided a suitable case study of an automation system.

  • In realizing a hydrogen society, it is important to secure the safety of the hydrogen refueling station, which is the facility where consumers can easily meet hydrogen. The hydrogen refueling station consists of compressed gas facilities that store high-pressure hydrogen, and there is a risk that the high-pressure compressed gas facility will rupture due to a fire explosion due to hydrogen leakage in the facility or the influence of surrounding fires. Accordingly, the Korea Gas Safety Corporation is making every effort to find out risk factors from the installation stage, reflect them in the design, and secure safety through legal inspection. In this study, a TNT explosion demonstration test using a protection wall was conducted to confirm the safety effect of the protection wall installed at the hydrogen refueling station, and the empirical test results were compared and verified using FLACS-CFD, a CFD program. As a result of the empirical test and CFD analysis, it was confirmed that the effect of reducing the explosion over-pressure at the rear end of the protection wall decreased from 50% to up to 90% depending on the location, but the effect decreased when it exceeded a certain distance. The results of the empirical test and computer analysis for verifying the safety of the protection wall will be used in proposals for optimizing the protection wall standards in the future.

  • In the semiconductor manufacturing process, the Diffusion process generates various reactive by-products. These by-products are deposited inside the pipes of post-processing and exhaust treatment systems, posing a potential risk of substantial dust explosions. In this study, three methods material verification, selection of analysis samples, and risk analysis were employed to address the substances produced during the Diffusion process. Among the materials handled in the Diffusion process, ZrO2, TEOD, and E-DEOS were identified as raw material capable of generating by-product dust. Test for Minimum Ignition Energy and dust explosion were conducted on the by-products collected from each processing facility. The results indicated that, in the case of MIE, none of the by-products ignited. However, the dust explosion test revealed that ZrO2 exhibited a maximum pressure of 7.6 bar and Kst value of 73.3 bar·m/s, its explosive hazard. Consequently, to mitigate such risks in semiconductor processes, it is excessive buildup.

  • Harmful factors such as shock waves and fragments are generated at domestic ammunition testing sites and military shell shooting training sites due to frequent shooting and explosion tests. As a result, complaints from local residents are rapidly increasing, and there is a high risk of damage to facilities and human life. The recently constructed ammunition test site built a test facility for firing artillery and rocket propulsion in a narrow area with a radius of 300 m due to site restrictions, but damage to the facility is accumulating because there is no adequate protective structure. Therefore, in this study, quantitative data on harmful factors such as noise, vibration, shock wave, and thermal effect generated between artillery firing and rocket propulsion tests were measured, and explosion pressure characteristics were analyzed to design a protective structure, and use Autodyn to protect performance. to perform verification.

  • In this study, a series of processes for evaluating the effective protection against barriers that should be equipped in institutions that perform reliability tests on high-risk ammunition, such as high-explosive ammunition, were introduced. The impact that high-explosive bombs can have on personnel includes damage to the eardrum and lungs caused by explosion overpressure and penetrating wounds that can be received by fragments generated simultaneously with the explosion. Therefore, a high-explosive with COMP B explosives as its contents were set up, and an explosion protection theory investigation to calculate the degree of damage, numerical calculations and simulations were performed to verify the protection power. A numerical calculation revealed the maximum explosion overpressure on the protective wall when the high-explosive exploded and the penetration force of the fragment against a 50 mm-thick protective wall to be 77.74 kPa and 41.34 mm, respectively. In the simulation verification using AUTODYN, the maximum explosion overpressures affecting the firewall and personnel were 56.68 kPa and 18.175 kPa, respectively, and the penetration of fragments was 35.56 mm. This figure is lower than the human damage limit, and it was judged that the protective power of the barrier would be effective.

  • Canister with composite sandwich panel has been suggested owing to its higher stiffness and strength over a weight for square shaped canisters. The pyro shock induced by a short time explosion inside a canister is generally considered to be the most severe source of load affecting on the entire structure. Therefore, in this study, the approach and modeling method to identify the effect of pyro shock on canister with composite sandwich panel in a numerical way were mainly discussed. Moreover, the verification was implemented through comparison with test results.
