A Study on Comparison of Life Safety Assessment Results according to Three Coupling Methods of Fire and Evacuation Simulation (화재·피난시뮬레이션의 커플링방식별 인명안전성평가 결과 비교에 관한 연구)

  • In Korea, life safety assessment through simulation are mandatory in performance-based design. Generally, there are three types of methods for simulation-based life safety assessments: the non-coupling method that compares available safe egress time (ASET) and required safe egress time (RSET) at a specific point through conducting fire and assessment simulations independently; the semi-coupling method that compares fire and evacuation simulation results by overlaying the result screens; and the coupling method that compares the results of fire effect simulation to an evacuation simulation. Of these methods, all designers in South Korea have used the only non-coupling method. In the non-coupling method, it is important to determine the location of a specific point to compare ASET and RSET. However, without any defined regulation, setting the location is determined based on the designer's experience and knowledge. The number of specific locations and the locations themselves differ with each designer, which can produce contrasting results in a life safety assessment. Therefore, this study conducted a life safety assessment based on the three methods (non-coupling, semi-coupling and coupling) and compared each of the results. Furthermore this study suggests a improvement way in particular for the computer simulation.

  • As industry develop rapidly, a possibility of railway-disasters (fire), are growing in consideration of speedy railway and increasing long tunnels. In Korea, KTX consists $46\%$ of tunnels constructed since early 1990, prescribed prevention disasters standard, taking into account that the train accident occurred. On this provision which refers other country's a high-speed railway fire safety regulation and is synthetically reflected topographical circumstance and tunnel size in Korea, in order to minimizing valuable casuality and securing safety operation of train from rapid evacuation and rescue a passenger from accident in tunnel.

  • In case of rolling stock, SEMS is generally applied in the advanced countries, but is start stage in our country. SEMS is defined the system engineering management system in order to achieve the optimized train performance among the several client requirements aspect of technical engineering management during the design life cycle. And the fire engineering activities in hong kong EMU project are introduced aspect of SEMS in this paper. The fire engineering at rolling stock in view of SEMS controls to apply the satisfied interior material by the fire safety standards (regulation of the commute urban subway safety guideline by the MOCT, BS 6853, NFPA 130, NF F 16-101) and to minimize the fire load in order that passengers egress safe from the fired rolling stock. The rolling stock in the advanced countries is designed to stand for 15-20 minutes in considering the rolling stock to be fired in tunnel. For passenger fire safety, the passenger evacuation provision and progress is set up.

  • Recently, the regulation about HEE(horizontally installed emergency exit) established at upper 4story in apartment houses was introduced by revising enforcement degree of Building Act. HEE is a facility for egress to lower story through floor breach and ladder system so that it gives a useful evaquation way directly to an individual household in apartment when they failed to evacuate through the entrance door. HEE may offer an opportunity to optain two way egress path ways instead of evacuation space at balcony and through path way to adjacent household in building and that might be an big strengh. but it needs to guarantee for against the crime, getting detailed reviews for being security and supplementation of fire test methods.

  • Recently Korea has imported and executed Performance Based Design for the method to settle the dangerousness on outbreak of fire of high-rise building. The overseas country's PBD is autonomic but It is unable to carry out the essential role of PBD as the performance based design that based the code based design in the domestic. Also It occurs the problems that different the classification standard of building as dualisation between the building code and the fire services act. In this study, We have investigated overseas's cases for the PBD of high-rise building and have drawn the improvement direction & the problem of domestic's PBD by comparing and the analysing the domestic regulation.

  • Regulation of Escape and fire-prevention of Building of South Korea were enacted as a part of building codes in 1962. Since it was enacted, the law has gone through many changes. In this study, evaluated the fire safety of the law about the case of a hotel that the fire risk are expected to be higher whenever it was changed. As a result, the current law has gotten better in tire safety since it was enacted. However, especially it could be confirmed that the evacuation safety is insufficient in the lower level of hotel building. In the case of accommodation, because the occupants become aware of fire lately, they have not enough time to escape. Therefore, this study suggests that it is needed to come up with an effective counterplan about the interior finish materials, fire door and fire compartments that the smoke layer descending time is longer.

A Study on Securing Safety of Evacuation through Smoke Control in Case of Fire at the Central Corridor Type Intelligent Buildings (중복도형 인텔리전트빌딩 화재시 연기제어를 통한 피난안전성 확보에 관한 연구)

  • This study investigated the smoke blocking and control systems for the safety of residents evacuation and for the prevention of smoke spread through the central corridor in the event of central corridor type of intelligent building fire. We offered additional ways of utilizing smoke ventilators and intake ventilation equipment and utilized CFD-based fire simulation program(FDS Ver.5.5.3) in order to analyze the effect. As a result, many differences in the smoke block effect, depending on the application of smoke ventilator and location of installation, was found. In addition, the result was found that larger effect was showed not in the case of application of smoke ventilator in central corridor only but application in fire room. The reason is that the smoke leakage is blocked primarily as air is flowed in the fire room through open door by operation of intake smoke ventilator in the public corridor and secondarily, the smoke leakage to the public corridor could be blocked as fire and smoke were released to the opened smoke ventilator continuously. Especially, the effect was maximized through complex interactions by applying smoke ventilator and intake ventilation equipment in corridor together rather than applying smoke ventilator and intake ventilation equipment independently. The proposed measure through this study shall be considered from architectural plan as one of ways for blocking from smoke spread to the central corridor in the central corridor type of intelligent building. In addition, flaws on regulation shall be established and supplemented.

  • Interest in fire prevention/fighting has been increased by large fire. It is important to install/manage the detector, alarm, firefighting facility, evacuation route and so on to minimize the damage from fire. Chemical plant is generally constructed by steel structure. So fireproofing is significantly required to chemical plant because steel structure should endure during fire. Currently, fireproofing should be applied up to 6m from ground by local regulation. But chemical plant can handle the large amount of flammable materials or only non-flammable materials. Required of fireproofing height by fire magnitude is studied in this thesis.
