In order to obtain bacterial metabolites inducing disease resistance in pepper plant, two hundred bacterial isolates were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of tobacco, cucumber, and pepper plant. Ethyl acetate extract of each bacterial culture was used to screening for induction of resistance against phytophthora blight of pepper plant. Application of ethyl acetate extract of an isolate SH122 culture to pepper plant conferred resistance against phytophthora blight consistently and significantly. According to cellular fatty acid analysis and other characteristics, the SH122 culture were significantly lower than those on control plants treated with ethyl acetate extract of nutrient broth. The B. pumilus SH122 itself of ethyl acetate extract of its culture did not show antifungal activity against phytophthora blight in pepper plants.
Ethyl acetate, methanol, water extract and their fractions from chestnut flower(Castancea crenata) were tested for antimicrobial activities. Yields of prebloomed chestnut flower extracts were 13.84, 12.90 and 1.82% in methanol, water and ethyl acetate, and those of the postbloomed were 13.12, 11.75 and 1.18%, respectively. Methanol extract from the chestnut flower was fractionated by solvents using hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and water, yields of those fractions were 0.16, 0.08, 1.94, 4.75 and 6.91% in the prebloomed, and were 0.90, 0.13, 1.40, 3.42 and 7.18% in the postbloomed. In the solvent extracts of water, ethyl acetate and methanol, methanol extract showed the most effective antimicrobial activity, antimicrobial activity of ethyl acetate fraction of methanol extract was stronger than others. Minimum inhibitory concentration of ethyl acetate fractions from the prebloomed showed 100, 140, 100 and 90ppm against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, Echerichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium, in fractions from the postbloomed were 140, 140, 100 and 150ppm, respectively. Growth of all the strains was completely inhibited to 30 hours in a 150ppm concentration. E. coli sells treated with ethyl acetate fraction was collapsed severely.
This study identified the formula of the antioxidant substance separated from the ethyl acetate and the butanol extract and tested the antioxidant properties with the electron donating ability(EDA). Each phase with the fractionated methanol extract from mulberry leaf was screened in advance for the antioxidant substance with EDA. As the result, activity appeared in the ethyl acetate and butanol phase and the antioxidant component was separated. As the consequence, 2 components from the ethyl acetate phase and 1 from the butanol phase were separated, among which the structures of the components from ethyl acetate were determined by wogonin and linarin, whereas the structure of the component from the butanol phase was determined by pectolinarin. In the screening of antioxidant activity by the scavenging effect of the DPPH radical, the wogonin and linarin components from ethyl acetate phase showed more powerful antioxidant property than the component from butanol. The results from this study indicate that the chemical compound separated from the ethyl acetate extract has more powerful antioxidant property than the one separated from the butanol extract. The components separated from the ethyl acetate extract were wogonin and linarin, which are flavonoids, whereas the component from butanol was pectolinarin. Therefore, this study suggested that the feasibility of mulberry leaf as a functional food additive and its value as a natural antioxidant is very high.
This study was carried out to assess the antilisterial potential of ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extract of a marine isolate of Aspergillus sp. The in vitro antilisterial efficacy of ethyl acetate extract was examined using disc diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determination, cell viable count and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) methods against the employed strains of Listeria monocytogenus. The ethyl acetate extract ($300{\mu}g\;disc^{-1}$) exhibited a promising antilisterial effect as diameters of inhibition zones against L. monocytogenes ATCC 19111, 19116, 19118, 19166 and 15313, which were found in the range of 11-17 mm along with their MIC values ranging from 125 to $1000{\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$ respectively. Also the EtOAc extract had strong detrimental effect on the viable count of the tested L. monocytogens ATCC 19166. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopic (SEM) study demonstrated potential detrimental effect of ethyl acetate extract on the morphology of L. monocytogenes ATCC 19116 at the used MIC concentration. These findings strongly support the role of ethyl acetate extract of a marine isolate of Aspergillus sp. as an antiliterial potential.

The study analyzed the total polyphenolic contents, DPPH radical scavenging activities, ABTS radical scavenging activities, reducing power levels, SOD-like activities, and tyrosinase inhibition activities of fractions from Campanula takesimana Nakai extract. Total polyphenolic content of the ethyl acetate fraction from Campanula takesimana Nakai extract was the highest. The ethyl acetate fraction of Campanula takesimana Nakai extract showed the lowest $IC_{50}$ value (0.13 mg/mL) as well as greater than 98% ABTS radical scavenging activity, which was similar to ascorbic acid. Further, reducing power was significantly higher in the ethyl acetate fraction. The SOD-like activity of edible plant was 70.56% (n-butanol fraction) and 62.27% (ethyl acetate fraction) at 1 mg/mL. Tyrosinase inhibition activity of Campanula takesimana Nakai extract was reduced to 34.77% in the n-butanol fraction and 30.85% in the ethyl acetate fraction at 5 mg/mL. These results suggest that the ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions of Campanula takesimana Nakai extract could be applicable as food additives or cosmeceutical ingredients.

This study was performed to investigate the antimicrobial effect of the Indigofera kirilowii extracts against food-borne pathogens. The Indigofera kirilowii was extracted with methanol at room temperature, and fractionation of the methanol extract from Indigofera kirilowii was carried out by using petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of the Indigofera kirilowii extracts was determined using a paper disc method against food-borne pathogens and food spoilage bacteria. The ethyl acetate extract of Indigo/era kirilowii showed the highest antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella dysenteriae. The water extract of Indigofera kirilowii showed relatively low antimicrobial activity against microorganisms used in this experiment. The synergistic effect has been found in combined extracts of Indigofera kirilowii and Pulsatilla koreana as compared to each extract alone. The growth inhibition curve was determined using ethyl acetate extracts of Indigofera kirilowii against S. aureus and S. dysenteriae. The ethyl acetate extract of Indigofera kirilowii showed strong antimicrobial activity against S. aureus at the concentration of 4,000 ppm. The 4,000 ppm of ethyl acetate extract from Indigofera kirilowii retarded the growth of S. aureus more than 24 hours and S. dysenteriae up to 48 hours. This study showed the possibility of using ethyl acetate extract of Indigofera kirilowii as a material of food preservative.
Lonicerae Flos was extracted with methanol and successively fractionated with petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol to investigate their antimicrobial effects against food-borne pathogens and food spoilage bacteria using paper disc method. Ethyl acetate extracts of L. Flos showed highest antimicrobial activity against Shigella dysenteriae. Synergistic effect in inhibition was observed when L. Flos extract was mixed with Artemisa capillaris extract as compared to using each extract alone. Growth inhibition curves were determined using ethyl acetate extracts of L. Flos against Staphylococcus epidermidis and S. dysenteriae. Ethyl acetate extract of L. Flos had antimicrobial activity against S. dysenteriae at 3,000 ppm, retarding growth of S. dysenteriae up to 12 hr.
In the present study, we investigated biological activities of Rosa davurica Pall. leaves in order to evaluate the possibility as a natural biomaterial. The 80% ethanol extract and its subsequent fractions of Rosa davurica Pall. leaves were prepared using several solvents with different polarities. The extraction yield was 33.4, 36.6, 25.2, 18.7, 5.8 and 5.8% in ethanol extract, aqueous, butanol, ethyl acetate, n-hexane, chloroform fractions, respectively. The ethyl acetate fraction (661.38 mg/g), butanol fraction (396.68 mg/g) and 80% ethanolic extract (239.54 mg/g) has higher total polyphenol contents than other fractions. The antioxidant activity was detected in ethanolic extract, ethyl acetate and butanol fractions. The ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest levels of DPPH radical scavenging activity ($IC_{50}$, $4.77{\mu}g/m{\ell}$). Moreover, the ethyl acetate fraction significantly inhibited production of NO in LPS-stimulated macrophage RAW 264.7 cells without cytotoxicity. These results indicate that 80% ethanol extract and its fractions of Rosa davurica Pall. leaf, especially ethyl acetate fraction, have the properties of anti-oxidant and anti-inflammation, suggesting leaf of Rosa davurica Pall. may be a candidate for natural and functional materials.
This study explores the antioxidant activity of solvent extracts from Vitis coignetiea skins, and the result is as follows. Total phenolic compound and flavonoids contents were the highest in ethyl acetate extract, $53.4{\pm}1.2\;mg$/100 g and $644.7{\pm}3.7\;mg$/100 g, respectively. Electron donating abilities of solvent extracts from Vitis coignetiea skin were proportionally increased with concentration and ethyl acetate extract ($80.93{\pm}0.58%$) showed the higher activity than BHT($63.21{\pm}0.72%$) at concentration of $50\;{\mu}l$/mL. Reducing power of solvent extracts from Vitis coignetiea skin was the highest in ethyl acetate extract(1.769) at concentration of $1,000\;{\mu}l$/mL. TBARS of ethyl acetate extract was higher than ascorbic acid. Nitrite scavenging ability of solvent extracts from Vitis coignetiea skin(pH 1.2, $1,000\;{\mu}l$/mL) was the highest in ethyl acetate extract($92.5{\pm}2.4%$).

This study was investigated on the antioxidative activity of $70\%$ ethanol extracts from lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) leaf. The extraction yields of $70\%$ ethanol extract was $8.16\%$. The extract was further fractionated subsequently by hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butanol and water. Antioxidative activity was examined by electron donating ability (EDA) using DPPH, TBA value, acid value (AV), and peroxide value (POV), in comparison with commercial antioxidants. Butanol fraction showed the highest extraction yields but ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest phenol content. The ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest EDA. The antioxidative activity of ethyl acetate fraction determined by AV and POV in accelerated oxidation condition of lard was similar to that of BHA.
